We were looking for a restaurant that has gluten-free on the menu and were so happy to find that almost all the food had the option to be cooked gluten-free. Vibe of this place is like a cozy home cooked meal! So many different options that are all locally sourced, organic, and super delicious. I got the pumpkin soup, luncheon pizza, cheddar broiled chicken, and the peanut butter pie. Every course of the meal was nicely presented and tasted perfect. Had a great time at WitW! We just bought a home nearby and started seeking out plant-forward restaurants, when Whole came on my radar, they were closed due to the owner/chef having medical issues. Once they reopened, I jumped at the opportunity to visit and we weren't disappointed. The dining space was open and homey. My wife had the Mushroom Soup special and Whole Enchilada entree, while i had the Tempura Broccoli Florets app and Shrimp Scampi dinner. All of our dishes were stellar. The soup was super-savory and delicious, the scampi was garlicky and flavorful. Overall, our dining experience was pretty spectacular. I also allowed myself to be coerced into having the Raspberry Chocolate Chip Brownie Sundae dessert, which was definitely NOT a mistake! OMG, the brownie underneath the ice cream, whipped cream and raspberry topping was actually fluffy and rich. Totally worth every calorie!! Sadly, there was only one other couple there finishing up dining when we arrived, and another couple came in as we were leaving. It was a Friday nite and i hope they did better business over the weekend. It's a lovely little gem in Broome County and i hate to see them suffer for lack of patrons. Just went there a couple nights with my son and we loved the food and atmosphere. Quiet chill relaxing place. Great homemade food by the legend himself - Eliot Fiks. He's been a cooking force for 42 years with farm to table fresh food approach. My favorite meals are pesto pasta, the pita pocket sandwiches, mushroom soup, shrimp scampi and love love the babaganoush appetizer. My first time there was on opening night 1980 and 42 years later Eliot still rocks. Definitely always ahead of his times. This place is a gem!!! The food is made with a lot of care and the flavors were delicious. The hummus was extremely fresh, the falafel was not overly breaded and had fantastic flavor. The chicken fingers were crunchy and perfectly tender inside. The steamed vegetables with chicken and tofu were also flavored perfectly and had a nice sauce accompanying it. The service was terrific. This was the worst experience I had on my takeout order of falafel pocket. I have written over two hundred reviews and this one is the lowest of all . Our family of four were on a road trip and sick of burgers and fries. As we walked in, Eliot the proprietor warned us that he was understaffed and it might take longer. We decided to wait and were sure we did l! Our need for delicious healthy food that satisfied all tastes was happily met! The decor is dated and we wished that there was no use of disposable dishware but at least it was compostable and the food did not disappoint. Scallops and blue fish dishes with lemon butter cooked perfectly, and not fishy. Mushrooms soup was rich and packed with flavor. The pesto was generous and not bulked up with too much cheese or pine nuts. If you are nearby definitely stop by you will not regret it. read more

Robbed by the waitress with red hair. After our meal, which was honestly OK...our bill was $29. My friend paid, putting $30 down and I put $11 on top for a tip. Being in the industry we both checked the amount TWICE, as the waitress watched our final count she disappeared behind the counter with our cash. She then stopped us before we left claiming we only left $7. Not only was that a complete lie... but she insisted (three times, because we refused the initial two) that we "come check behind the register" to prove she hadn't dropped it. We counted the money we had left in our wallets and KNEW WE HAD PAID. I then paid the $30 AGAIN and EVEN LEFT ANOTHER $5 TIP. Knowing what had just happened I still didn't want the restaurant to pay for the actions of their waitress. However, management did not seem to believe us and just wanted us out of their hair as they said "whatever it's $30" and tried to throw $30 at me. I gave her back $10 and insisted she take our word into consideration. So, in the end, we paid $55 for a $29 meal. Being robbed by the waitress. Visiting Binghamton, NY. area this week. Lovely area of our country. Today, we spent some of our downtime at the Whole in the Wall. The WITW got it's name when the owner was renovating and installed a round front window. This IS the WITW - literally. The South Washington St. area underwent city sponsored improvements over the last decade leading to more popularity of the restaurant with local colleges. Today we had the Baba Ghanouj Pocket and a Falafel Pocket with Hummus. Both were absolutely fresh, filling, and delicious. The service was excellent and friendly. There are local artist's works on the wall. All that is needed to be more perfect is a coffee service and one or more musicians! I can enthusiastically recommend the WITW to anyone with a vibe for energy filled healthy eating! Maybe I'll see you there next time I'm able to visit. read more

Returned for dinner with a friend and had another great experience. We split the split-pea soup (ha), garlic ball, burger special (organic, local burger with fries) and big tease sundae. Cold and wet and hungry we stumbled into the Whole in the wall. One vegetarian and one vegan. The menu looked promising, but initially I had some reservations about the restaurants definition of vegan. They list the ingredients of the bread as containing honey, but still apply a vegan label to it. The place itself was cute. So, with no more adieu.... The Pros: * Honestly. This is Binghamton. Where the crap else are you going to get vegan food? * It's a cute place. Beautiful old architecture. They reclaimed salvage materials from other old buildings in the restoration of this one. * There's a convenient parking lot out back. The Cons: * SLOW service. There was a sign to wait to be seated. We were ignored at it for at least 5 minutes, by what seemed to be the only server on at that moment. (Who was doing prep, cash. serving, etc. Running the whole front of the house.) Taking our orders was slow. We had to ask for menus. Getting food was slow. Getting check was slow. Them picking UP the check with the card on it was at least 10 minutes. * Small portions. I mean S. M. All. For $13 I would expect to get more than two small corn tortilla's filled with bean paste and topped with melted cheese and what appeared to be a side salad. No, literally. A salad. With no dressing. On top of the enchilada. Lettuce. Chunks of cucumber, and small tomatoes. Nothing else. * They didn't have the chili that day. * The iced tea was lipton. Just... Meh. * The food was mostly flavorless. My companion had a veggie tofu stirfry. The veggies looked soggy and the flavor was mostly just bland. My Whole Enchilada was just ok. There was a little bit of spice to it, but only in pockets... Not all the way through. It tasted mostly like store bought refried beans. If this store were in a more veggie friendly spot than Binghamton, I'd likely give it fewer stars. But, as it is... They have something of a niche market here. I've definitely had better. There is great dispute throughout the Binghamton area about what the *second* best restaurant might be, but the Whole In the Wall is definitely *the best* restaurant in the Binghamton area. The soups are reliably perfect. The pasta specials are often unusual but always tasty. The enchilada, tostada, and lasagna are probably my favorites. But most importantly, there is never any question or doubt as to the provenance of the ingredients. Asking one of the friendly Wholers where the chicken is from will always yield a satisfying answer: either from a local farm or from an outfit like Murray's. This is the only place in town that I know of that you can be certain that, no matter what you're ordering, you aren't getting factory-farmed crap. I grew up in Binghamton, and every time I come back, I'm elated to see this place still kickin'. Please, Binghamton: keep it open for me. read more

The vibe of the restaurant is like an old diner/house feel. When we were there they had a banjo and violin player performing, which definitely escalated the ambiance. The server was very kind! Small but thoughtful beer list, and the specials also looked good. Parking is a bit strange - we used the lot across the street. Not a place to raise hell, but a great place for good conversation and a fresh meal. It's neat little place and I imagine on an evening when it's bustling it has a nice atmosphere to it. We were here on a Saturday morning for lunch so it was kinda quiet. The waitress was friendly and seemed to handle our 7 top without getting flustered. There was only one other customer who came in at the same time as us and he did get up and walk out when the waitress didn't get to him. I don't blame him as he did sit there for over 10 minutes with just a menu but again it was just the one waitress and she probably wasn't expecting 7 people first thing on a Saturday morning. The menu was extensive and I went with a Chicken pocket and it was very good and a large portion. All the food that came out for the other people I was with looked good and everyone seemed to enjoy it. While driving through New York state on a roadtrip last week, my husband and I stopped for a delightful dinner at The Whole In The Wall Restaurant. We found it using my favorite roadtrip toolEat Well Guide and were intrigued by other Yelp reviews, especially about the garlic ball. According to this cozy, down to earth restaurant's menu, they strive to "serve the highest quality all natural food in a unique and offbeat way." We could tell right away that the establishment has been pretty sucessful living up to this mission as evidenced by the memorbilia left behind by various pleased customers like Bob Dylan, Phish and REM and the mail order business they now have selling their eclectic pestos (like sundried tomato and ramp flavors), and the fact that the restaurant has been going strong in the same quaint location for 30 years now. The decor made me smile, earthy and funky but very clean and spacious at the same time. Our waitresses were attentive and friendly. Opening the menu, I kept smiling, with so many vegetables and locally sourced ingredients, organic free range grass fed beef and even brown rice at no surcharge! We started out with the sundried pesto cheese spread with crackers, Jamacian ginger lemonade and a side salad with the homemade sesame-yogurt dressing. Old-timey music eminated from an upright piano played by an old man with a calm soothing voice, hitting our ears at just the right volume. We shared a bowl of the famous creamy mushroom soup. After one bite, we knew why this soup is so popular. It is so thick, gravy-like and full of umami. I usually try to figure out what is in awesome flavors are when I find something so delicious as this, but we just decided to enjoy it and not bother thinking about it so much. Next came the garlic ball. This is no wimpy garlic bread. It is essentially a dense homemade whole wheat roll drenched in garlic butter with parsley. It is chewy, salty, garlicy, gooey, hot and needs to be eaten with a fork and knife. I could understand how someone could not like it - but for garlic lovers like us it was an excellent choice. Our main dishes - rigatoni with red pepper pesto and lasagna with sauteed bell peppers, zuccini, eggplant, cheddar and creamy butternut squash sauce - were both cooked just right and tasted like they were made with fresh ingredients. The Whole in the Wall is a golden arrow in the road trip food quiver. Earthy. All natural. Wheat grass. Pitas. You know the deal. The food can be satisfying and the mood welcoming. Whatever I ordered always seemed quality, there are some some great hits here, as well as a few misses. I remember anything with their garlic butter being wildly good. This is like many quality organic/farmer friendly restaurants. A refreshing change from anywhere in particular. I would take a girl here who doesn't play sports (other than running), is a picky eater, uses deodorant that doesn't work, and feels good about 'caring'. This place is just okay, but really nothing too special. It distinguishes itself as a vegetarian and health-conscious restaurant, but vegetarian does not equal bland. I don't think I'd come here again, particularly because I don't find any dishes to be too flavorful. The most disappointing thing is the "famous" pesto, which is highly overrated, in my opinion. I've had the regular pesto before I became lactose intolerant, and then had the spinach pesto after I was unable to eat dairy, and both were simply underwhelming. It wouldn't hurt to add some salt, pepper and garlic into the pesto to amp up the flavors. I've come here a few times because I knew other people really liked it and I wanted to give it a second chance. I ended up giving it 4 chances before I gave up, because no dish ever really stuck out in my mind as delicious or worth the money I paid. Even the babappetizer, which is usually a solid dish that can't go wrong, tasted boring to me. The atmosphere is unique and the staff is friendly, but that's not enough to keep me coming back.
