The server was great (she had piercings, colored hair and tattoos if I remember right, in case anyone reads this from management), and she was able to answer my questions very well, and even gave us some suggestions. We were seated immediately. It was a Thursday evening and business was slowing down from peak dinner hours. The waitress was friendly and efficient, meeting every need promptly. We had fried clams for Meg and an open faced roast beef sandwich and mashed smothered in gravy for me. Both were delicious, and the servings generous. My salad was served to my specific request, and also excellent. The restaurant is not new and the furnishings show their experience. Somehow, there's a certain charm to the seemingly familiar mileu. Comfortable. Yes, that's the feeling. Prices are moderate and all the usual cards are accepted without an added premium. From an atmosphere standpoint very pleasing. Price point for what you get also fine. Service-Friendly but not too reliable. Server brought wrong food and left quickly before we could tell them. Came back and was sorry but gave incorrect food to correct person after in front of us which seemed sketchy due to growing concerns with viruses. Quality- Good, but in Binghamton NY the one thing we have is food places galore. Went here to try new place near Arena before hockey game. Many better choices available. Finding the right diner in unknown territory is a job for research or instinct; in this case I'm glad we trusted our gut and not Yelp reviews. From the sweet waitress to the red vinyl booths, Red Oak made a positive first impression. We had developed a fixation on omelets and mozzarella sticks over our trail mix- and vendor food-weekend, and our server confirmed that both were superior choices. I know chickens can fly, but man, these eggs had wings! Five minutes after ordering up one Western and two feta-spinach 'lets, we were delivered three super hot plates of eggs, fries (or homefries, your choice) and toast. The feta-spinach version had plenty of the goodies folded in throughout (not stuffed like some omelets), and was perfectly tender, besides being gigantic. She had chicken n biscuits. It was ok. Didn't finish, didn't want to bring it home either. I had the $16.99. T - Bone. My first question was "where's the beef?" It was way less than 1/4 inch thick. I mean thin! It totally blew me away! Mashed potatoes were fake and semi cold. The bread was hard and wrapped in Saran. Probably 4 days old. I asked if I could substitute cottage cheese for soup. Was told no. We opted for dessert. Wife had the rice pudding that was bad. Tasted rancid. I had the chocolate our that was old. My suggestions are to not go there! read more

I have been going to the Red Oak for about 15 years and have always been more than satisfied with the food and service. Breakfast and Lunch are the times I usually go to grab a quick bite. The haddock was huge, I loved the portion- had better fried fish elsewhere, but it was good enough i shared with my mom. Thought price was great and staff were very pleasant. Been there lately quite a few times with our family for dinner and have been extremely pleased with the service. I'd go as far as to say Heidi may be one of the best waitresses in the area. Very kind and prompt service. Very rare to find anymore. The food is really good too. The Crabmeat stuffed haddock is to die for!!! A must try. I highly recommend giving it a shot. This is a classic diner. On 2-13-10 I ordered the 1/2 rotisserie chicken, soup salad 3 different gravies! My boy-friend ordered the meatloaf w/ homemade real mash potatoes (red ones) and salad. Our meals even came with 3 different choices of breads! All this for under $20 We aren't big eaters so we had leftovers to take. Our water glasses were very big. i haven't been here much over the years, i feel like a lot of the reason is because my friends would tell me that this place is gross, but really i feel like people just think it's gross because it's in a run down part of binghamton. when i've been in here recently the place definitely seemed pretty clean and for the most part my food was pretty good. breakfast- i had the french toast here a few years back, my friends and i went on new years day because it was one of the only places open. i remember being pretty impressed with the french toast. recently i've also tried their pancakes, which were good but nothing amazing. i also had a bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich. only 2 slices of bacon and they were pretty thin so there wasn't much flavor there, but the eggs on it (i got scrambled) were good and the bread they used was also very good. also, i've been hitting up a lot of local diners lately and this place so far has served me the best home fries. dinner- i tried their rib dinner and their half chicken dinner. apparently the chicken is the same they used to serve at Chicken Chalet. i never ate there but the chicken was pretty good. the meat wasn't seasoned that much but it came with a glaze that was pretty good. as for the ribs, i'd stay away from them. they are really meaty but kinda chewy, and again very little, if any, seasoning, so all you taste is the sweet from the bbq sauce and the fat from the meat, it left me with a gut ache. as for the sides, the baked beans and the mashed potatoes were pretty good, i would get them again. the potato and mac salads were just ok. the cornbread and biscuits were also just ok, they were pre-made and then wrapped in plastic, so they weren't exactly fresh. the service here is good, the last time i went the food came out of the kitchen in just a few minutes. the servers are friendly and the place has a nice cozy vibe to it. i'd suggest checking this place out, i definitely wanna go back and try their burger and some pie read more

I ate here last Thursday with a friend who had fond childhood memory of the place. The food was bland and lukewarm. I didn't know hot turkey with gravy could have the flavor of wallpaper paste but it did. The gyros was horrible, greasy and this diner is supposedly this is owned by a Greek family. .. the decor is dated and not in a great retro way. 90% of the guests are 50 years and up in age. This place needs a manager who doesn't loudly berate her staff that she ( the manager) isn't supposed to be responsible for closing some such thing behind the lunch counter. I had two breakfast sandwiches along with a side order of bacon. Everything was good except the bacon was rubbery.
