First of all, I am surprised that I have never rated my experiences with Dr. Gutierrez and his staff. While living in Whittier (2009-2017), I worked in Beverly Hills as an office manager for a private dermatology practice. I knew I could receive a word-of-mouth (excuse the pun) recommendation with the expectation of a professional courtesy. However, I did not believe/feel I had major dental concerns, and I was not seeking to capitalize on perks since I had a PPO insurance plan. After doing some research, I found Dr. Gutierrez's office to be accommodating regarding my main objective: teeth whitening. His staff was open and honest when I called to make sure the office was a good fit. I found them straightforward and said they do perform teeth whitening; however, I would still need an initial exam. I did not find this approach erroneous. Why? I intended to utilize my insurance whenever feasible and cover any costs not covered by it personally. Putting it into perspective: taking my PPO out of the equation, a plastic surgeon will not automatically perform a cosmetic procedure at a person's request. A radiology center would not automatically perform a CAT scan of an individual's brain if they walked in off the street with a headache and agreed to pay for it. Why? Medical facilities do not work that way. Invasive cosmetic procedures or noninvasive tests fall within the spectrum of medical procedures and are typically performed by certified specialists; therefore, one can expect bureaucracy, red tape, and ethical considerations in medical care. If not an emergency, delays can be frustrating. But when pain and costs are involved, everyone's time is precious, so expectations of being accommodated can be subjective, even though patients are not to be blame for their issues. Therefore, implementing proper management when 'risks' are involved is crucial (I will revisit this issue at the end of my review). I was due for an oral tune-up (x-rays, cleaning, and consultation of recommendations). I chose to open up and address concerns about past dental issues. In 2004, for several months, I had a documented history of trigeminal neuralgia, which ended up being related to my 2005 confirmed thyroid cancer and not a cavity filling as initially thought. The filling was the least of my concerns compared to the many other neck/head medical issues I needed to address during those months/years. And so, upon our first meeting, I finally addressed any problem I had been evading (since I was in a 'safe' place) when Dr. Gutierrez was surprised to find a crater in one of my molars. The neglected molar was one issue, but I had wisdom teeth that could have interfered with my dental health (I knew this before establishing my dr/patient relationship with Dr. Gutierrez). He performed my teeth whitening and handled root canal treatments. Eventually, I signed up for Invisalign because costs were always my excuse for not getting braces. Although costs were no longer a factor, Invisalign was less expensive, less time-consuming, but also less permanent, because braces meant I had to have my canines pulled. After so many years of medical issues, less invasive meant more. The Invisalign option met my aesthetic interests on all levels. The only reason why I stopped seeing Dr. Guiterrez in early 2019 is that I permanently moved to Northern California. Bottom line, regardless of the number of my outpatient treatments, I found Dr. Gutierrez to have an excellent bedside manner and expertise. Again, having worked in the medical field, but more importantly, I have also been a patient who has suffered misdiagnosis (deemed as malpractice, but I chose not to sue), as patients, we deserve our dignity. Still, that being said, I did not find it offensive when his staff discussed aspects of my care (e.g., explaining the costs of procedures (billing), obtaining my signed consent, confirming follow-up availability options, scheduling the appointments, or checking in to explain whenever there may have been wait times). I acknowledge that some people may not have a good rapport with a professional, or that mistakes may occur that makes better sense for a patient to seek care from another professional; however, what I am stating from my experience throughout the years I was a regular patient is that there was no pattern of nefarious treatment or substandard care by Dr. Guiterrez and his staff. Anyone seeking medical treatment should always be aware that they have the right to a second opinion and should never apologize for seeking one. Still residing in No. Cal. I think of Dr. Guitierrez often and have contemplated traveling to reestablish my patient-physician relationship; however, I know that dentists are at the top of the list for evaluations and treatment should pain or emergencies be involved, and that evaluations and treatment cannot/should not wait; therefore, I have chosen to just keep my fond memories. read more

I was looking for a new dentist and decided to call this office after seeing so many great reviews on Yelp. Unfortunately, my experience did not reflect those reviews. When I called, the receptionist answered and I asked about becoming a new patient and whether they accepted my insurance. I explained that I wasn't sure of my insurance provider, and instead of offering help, she responded, "If you don't know, how am I supposed to know?" I found that response dismissive and unprofessional. I then asked if she could possibly look it up using my information, but she declined and simply told me I needed to know my insurance. No guidance, no alternatives, and no attempt to assist. A more helpful and courteous response--like suggesting I contact my employer or offering to help once I had the information--would have made a big difference. Instead, the interaction felt abrupt and unwelcoming. First impressions matter, and this experience was disappointing, especially given the positive reviews. Unfortunately, it makes me hesitant to move forward with this office. read more

I'm extremely surprised this dentist has good reviews. This was the worst experience I've ever had with a dentist. He treated me for extraction of my wisdom teeth which was torture. He said he had unexpected difficulties which doesn't make sense to me because I believe that's what x-rays are for. I think he should have referred me to an oral surgeon. Five days after the extraction I was still in horrible pain and had swelling. The office fit me in right away and his response was "everything looks beautiful". He said he could redo it but he didn't have time as if me leaving work or my pain wasn't important enough. He also instructed me to take two antibiotics for my next two doses which also didn't sound right. I called my PCP about this and he said absolutely not, one pill only. I got a second opinion by an Oral Surgeon the minute I walked out of that office. Let me tell you, I should have done this from the beginning. The oral surgeon also found that my teeth that the Dr. Gutierrez cracked and left was actually coming out of my gums, this is another thing the surgeon will have to clean up from the mess he did. Very old school by not using dissoluble stitches. On the first visit they gave me a treatment plan and said my responsibility was around $280, they were trying to say I was responsible for the contractual adjustment, being a medical biller I knew this was absolutely against the law therefore, I asked them to get a per-authorization to see exactly what I would have to pay which was half the price they were trying to charge me. I know, I shouldn't have returned but being that they wanted charge $30 for a copy of my x-ray I decided to give them a try. I also want to mention he didn't charge my insurance for my x-ray but yet he charged me cash. He also said he put medicine on my teeth to avoid infections, he never asked for my permission then charges me ANOTHER $60. I filed a grievance with my insurance company. I hope no one ever has to experience what I went through and would highly suggest you look for another dentist. I will say this, the ladies were nice and the Asian dentist was much better than Dr. Gutierrez. He needs to work on communication with his patient. Had a bad experience here. First off when the lady took my X-rays she kept having to repeat them. The dentist suggested I get braces, I asked "do you really think I should?" His response was no you are fine. Also I had to go back and they said my dual coverage wouldn't cover, problem with the insurance. I said forget I'll come back another day when it is resolved bc I don't want to pay that much and they promised I wouldn't. Few weeks later I receive a huge bill. Also this happened to my sister they charged her and later she receives a bill in the mail. Will never come here again. I don't understand why there are so many good reviews. read more

Going to the dentist has always been something that I never enjoyed doing. About two months ago I decided that it was time for me to make a change and move out of California. So I booked a one way flight to Hawaii and started getting everything ready. One thing that I knew I needed to do was take care of some dental work. My old dentist was not getting back to me so I reached out to the family and asked around as to anyone they would recommend. My sister and mother both recommended Whittier Dental Arts, with my previous experiences of dental work I had a feeling of reluctancy. When I went in boy was I amazed at the difference between this facility and others. They utilize cutting edge technology to map your teeth and the whole thing became a journey in improving my dental health. Dr. Gutierrez is amazing and I do not use this word lightly. My teeth were not in the best of conditions and I was worried my that I would have to deal with cavities in Hawaii. He really put in the time and energy to make sure that my teeth would be the best condition possible before my trip. The thing I loved hearing from him is when he would say 'beautiful' while working in my mouth. In anything that we do there are levels of how good someone is at a skill. Novice, intermediate, expert, etc. There is one level above it and that would be when someone masters a profession or skill. Look at clips of Michael Jordan or Estas Tonne (guitarist) and you will witness those who have mastered a skill and have turned it into an artform. Dr. Gutierrez has turned dental work into an artform and man is he an artist. I first thought that the name dental arts was just a phrase they used but it is pretty spot on. If there is anyone I would want to have work on my teeth it would be this man and when I fly back to see family I will make a cleaning appointment at Whittier Dental Arts. I came to this place last May, and if I lived in the area I would definitely go back! I was visiting the area and staying with family members when I woke up one morning and had a toothache. My face was swollen and the pain was unbearable so I looked on Yelp for a dentist in the area. I stumbled upon this place and they took me in immediately. The staff was really nice and accommodating. They took me back, did some X-Rays and they pointed out that I needed to have my wisdom teeth pulled immediately. They gave me some great recommendations for oral surgeons in the area and gave me some medication to ease the pain. I highly recommend Dr. Gutierrez for anyone! read more

O.k. people. Listen up. This guy is the best in the west. I am almost 50 years old and have had braces starting at the age of 12 and dental follow ups and braces again in my adult years seen many dentists been to the best (or so I thought) until finding Dr.Gutierrez and his "merry staff". "I no-longer have to drive to Brentwood for the best". I would like to let you know that with this dentist you get a sincere humanistic "safe" feeling. I hinted to him that I would be less stressed with the needles and work if I could listen to a specific artist while getting some work done. The next time I came in for a visit he had the entire album of this artist playing in the observation room I was in (even though the office was playing something different I couldn't listen to it completely. He loves what he does and it shows! "He has given me more work for the money than he gets money for his work". In this city of Dentists, that's a rarity. Highly recommend him and his staff! P.S.
