Cup of Strawberry Custard.
Cassandra J.

I finally decided to stop in and try the frozen custard here after having several disappointing frozen treats at other places on Main Street, and I won't be going back to any of those other places again. What Whits' lacks in flashy and old school Mayberry storefront appeal it more than makes up for with genuinely delicious frozen treats. What knocked a star off for me was that the ambiance is pretty lacking and there wasn't really seating available inside, but those are honestly the only things I can fault them on. Inside is overall pretty small with a counter and the menu on suspended boards over it, a freezer full of premade frozen custard to-go, and some merch thankfully out of the way. It's simple for what it is, and the menu is visible and easy to navigate which makes the simplicity kind of work. This business is also set apart by the fact that they stay open longer than a lot of places on Main Street, and if you're out after dinner or for an evening walk you can pop in for a really nice treat. So again you aren't paying for atmosphere but more for convince and a quality product. So admittedly I had never tried frozen custard before coming here, so I can't compare it to other frozen custard places, but I can definitely compare it to other frozen treat options in the area. When you come here, you can see the machines they're using to make the custard, unlike almost everywhere else on the street that serves ice cream out of a commercial 3-gallon container. That alone to me resonates that they're putting a lot of effort into the product, and after my first bite I can say for certainty it shows. I got a cup of their plain strawberry, which had strawberry bits that tasted fresh not like freeze-dried hunks of sweetness, and my friend tried their vanilla with cookie dough, and it was a good amount of cookie dough for the price. If you haven't tried frozen custard before, please remedy that because I was blown away by how much smoother it was without being overly heavy, and how much better the flavors carried through. The only flaw Whit's frozen custard has is that if you're walking down Main Street on a warm day with it, it will start to melt quickly so you're racing the clock a little. As far as the price goes most people will spend at least $3-4 on a treat (aside from the kid's menu which is a little less), but even their specialty sundae options are only $5.50 tops. It isn't the cheapest option in town, but the prices are still really reasonable, and everything I've tried has absolutely been worth the price. What I also really love is that they are constantly adding something new and/or seasonal to the menu. They're also super cool about free samples! I can also say that it really has something for everyone, you can keep it simple or try something new every time you visit. Seriously, they'll put the frozen custard in coffee or slushies and I seriously can't wait to go back and try both! Another big seller for me is that it may be a chain, but it's still locally run and fits the small-town family business scene for the area. Customer service has been great, and it's been nice meeting a local family invested in bringing something new and delicious to Mayberry. Overall, the business is likely not fully recovered from COVID, but as they get back on track I hope to see them improve the customer experience a little more and invest in some curb appeal and branding. No matter what though, they have an unbeatable product, and I hope locals and visitors alike give them a try (and get just as hyped as me to return)! They're officially my number one recommendation to anyone hoping to get a cool treat when visiting downtown Mayberry, and as much as I hope this review convinces some people to try something new, there's no substitute for heading in and trying it out for yourselves!

The Custard here is spectacular. Very smooth as custard should be. I got the flavor of the day, "Buckeye" it was delicious.

They have several different options, but my favorite is a hot dog and fries. They do use red hot dogs which I think are superior in the hot dog game. Worth stopping in if you're in the area!

We pulled in a parking place right in front of the Dairy Center mid afternoon, As you walk in they have a small counter to the left and a couple booths and tables to the right. All the walls are decorated with things from before the 60's! Also, they will also serve you in your car! We were quickly greeted by a very friendly smile. I started off with a Pepsi, even thought I'm a Coke guy. I didn't mind because this place is special. After a few sips of Pepsi, we ordered. I got a cheese burger with onion rings, ok one of the best I have ever had and the Onion rings were the best!!, My oldest Grand Daughter also got a Cheeseburger with fries and polished it off and loved the crinkle fries! The youngest Grand Daughter got a Grilled Cheese! Our waitress was amazing, Hannah went above and beyond to make my Grand Daughters feel very special that day!! She made the oldest smile sooo Big after a VIP experience it was very heart warming! What Hannah didn't know at the time was that the oldest was diagnosed with Leukemia just after Easter, and smiles do not come that often. As I took a picture of those two, they made me tear up.... There is so much good in the world and I wish everyone would have seen Hannah's beautiful heart that she shared with these girls! Also, the gentleman flipping the burgers was amazing as well, he could be the owner! He was soft spoken with a giving heart! If you live in the area, please stop in and say thanks to them, and enjoy the food and service! If you are passing by, don't pass up this hidden Gem! As my friend and neighbor Lee sings...God Bless the USA!

I had a footlong all the way with fries and finished it off with Krazy Kolor Ice Cream. It was all yummy, but nothing any more special than another burger and fries joint. The establishment itself is rather messy. I wouldn't say dirty, but tons of tables empty and un-wiped. Bits and pieces of trash here and there. The drink counter had stuff spilled all over it and trash on it as well. The workers here have no personality. We've been here twice in the last six months and everyone we've interacted with has been dull and unlively, which is a bummer. They have a drive-through which is great if you want a hot dog or burger and fries to go in a rather quick time and there is patio seating available.

They have delicious ice cream, service is usually really good and the restaurant and bathrooms stay pretty clean. My issue tonight is only one thing, but it's a significant thing and nothing that is in the employees control. The menu items are NOT correct. There was a price on the menu that said the soup combo was 6.99 and the cashier stated they couldn't do the chicken stew as the soup combo and that was fine. The hand written sign on the register said the chicken stew was $6.99. Our total came up to $43 for 3 people and I thought that was kind of high, but we then I remembered we ordered the soup and a wrap extra to try so we figured it was right. After paying I got to looking and everything was rang up at at least $0.50 extra per item than the menu said. One of the items on the menu was $5.29 but rang up as $5.92 and so it seems like it's an intentional overcharge on items but making it appear to be the same price by just flipping numbers. We aren't really thrilled with that. $0.50 extra per item isn't a ton, but it adds up and I'd rather you just list the correct prices for sure. We didn't bother the kids working with it because in the past we have been told that they have mo way of changing what the register says. So food is good but watch what the prices are ringing up as !

All the yogurt machines worked and they had a good selection (at least 10 flavors). I've been to other Sweet Frog locations and a common problem is the sugar-free/vegan options don't get the same amount of upkeep, but I was happy to note that the Mt. Airy location didn't have this problem! The toppings bar seemed fairly clean and the fruit actually tasted decently fresh. Gloves were also provided to touch the equipment and serving spoons so the overall environment made us feel good about our visit. The real pros of this location are that they provide a pretty consistent experience, I've never had a problem with quality, and they stay open until 9 pm which is late for Mt. Airy. They are also worth following online because they constantly have seasonal and holiday promos as well as offers where they work with other local businesses. And who could forget no weigh Wednesday? The cons are that the shop is pretty small and seating is super limited and if you accidentally stop in when they're busy parking won't be fun, the self serve experience will be annoying and don't expect to be able to get a seat and enjoy your treat. The biggest aggravation from my last visit that was I wanted to see the nutritional chart which is at the beginning of the yogurt line and a family came in and didn't distance and instead stood right beside me huffing and tapping their feet waiting for me to grab my yogurt and get out of their way. They could have gone around me, but for whatever reason, they didn't. That isn't so much the store's fault but the atmosphere here is usually someone letting their kids run around and scream, people impatiently trying to push you through the line, or a large group of people taking up all the seating. I've had experiences here on slow days that were super enjoyable, but it's hard to always know when their slow hours will be. Overall, the store is definitely clean and friendly and the yogurt is definitely worth the price, but the other patrons usually don't ever make us want to stay and eat our yogurt. This isn't really the business's fault that they're popular, but it can get pretty annoying.
