Anyway skip ahead a year or 2 later we finally made it on over here. I had no idea it was so close to the main street and I see many park before dinners in our future. Of course the day we finally came here was also one of the hottest recently at almost 90 degrees so we didn't stay to long. We will for sure be back.

I was admiring the birds on the water and I walked and it helped pass the time. Keep a look out for droppings on the ground unless you don't care to soil your shoes. Nearing the end of my walk, I really wanted to spend some time on the bridge where most of the waterfowls were gathered. It turns out that a family was feeding them. The very last morsel was taken by one geese that miffed another geese and so it chase the other with aggression. Birds can be pretty brutal and they were quite huge so I had to stay away. What an unfortunate experience. Besides the lake, there's also a beautiful playground, picnic tables, a sports field and tennis courts. The Heckscher Museum of Art can also be found on the grounds as well as a September 11 Memorial. It is definitely worth a visit. There is decent amount of parking spaces all around the park for ease of access too.

After purchasing our tickets at a dockside tent, where various souvenirs were also being sold by the volunteers, we boarded a small boat for a 10-minute ride to the Lighthouse. The boat ride through Huntington Harbor was absolutely lovely - weather was warm, sunny, and clear, the water was smooth, and the views were fantastic. Arriving at the Lighthouse, we got off the boat on a floating dock and, after a brief introduction, began the guided tour with two tour guides. The first tour guide took us to the second floor of the lighthouse, out onto the landing, and up into the very top of the lighthouse where the light itself it, and was very thorough in his explanations and seemed enthusiastic about his tour. He was very knowledgable. The second tour guide told us about the living quarters of the Lighthouse and was also informative. All of the volunteers were very friendly and were clearly very interested in their work and very knowledgeable about the Lighthouse. After the tour, we returned to the boat and headed back to shore. All in all, the entire experience took exactly one hour, from initially boarding the boat to returning to shore. The suggested donation for the tour is $15 for each adult, but they accepted $20, and we bought a magnet for $3. The tent in which to purchase tickets and souvenirs is located at the end of the parking lot of Gold Star Beach in Huntington, just by the dock. There were signs indicating that a parking permit was required and that Huntington residents could purchase a seasonal or daily pass and that non-residents must pay a daily fee and display a tag; however, there was no one at the gate when we pulled in, and though we waited for someone to come, no one ever appeared, so we parked. We saw someone at the gate as we boarded the boat. We didn't have any problem with our parking, perhaps we just lucked out. The Lighthouse was beautiful and is nicely maintained. We really had a fantastic time. Our only complaint is that on the way back from the Lighthouse, the boat seemed much too crowded, to the point where we were really seated directly up against each other. However, I think the same number of people were on the boat when it headed to the Lighthouse, so I think the issue was more that no one was telling people to sit on both front and back of the boat or asking people to move around - because as we disembarked, I noticed that there were 12 people at the front and only 2, who were sitting with plenty of room, at the back.

We come at least once a week to play with other kids her age and she always has a great time. Seems to be a family park with so many toddlers running about. The jungle gyms are separated by age category and the swings all are in good working order. A rubber floor mat ensures that the children won't hurt themselves during the inevitable falls they encounter. The much larger section of the park contains the playing fields for soccer and field hockey- when we grow a little more, we will update our review to tell you about the meticulous fields we see on the other side of the fence.... Can't wait for a night game or two under the lights.

The park includes two synthetic athletic fields, a practice area, and a playground for little ones and a nice parking lot. It's a great open area for kids to get all their boisterous energy out and adults too. It conveniently connects to Froehlich preserve as well. There's an interesting statue put there in memory of a Lloyd Harbor girl killed by a drunk driver in Texas in 2005. She was 13 years old and had been active in the Cold Spring Harbor Soccer Club. The Mohlenhoff Nursery property was slated to become a bus depot and repair yard for the South Huntington School District but thanks to dedicated and caring residents and a tireless effort by the Cold Spring Harbor Soccer Club, they got the land through its Open Space Preservation Program. I'm not sure how it all unfolded exactly but it's a nice park and a good union with the Froehlich preserve. Hopefully neither will ever be destroyed.
