We're here in Oceanside once a year for my husband's job, so we decided to give our 9yr old granddaughter a surfing lesson, we went to Yelp and looked for some and found Whitlock Surf Experience, so happy we did choose Whitlock...my granddaughter was a little nervous about taking lesson and wanted to see if they had a female instructor...so I gave Whitlock a called and "Cory" the owner answered and I explained what my granddaughter wanted and unfortunately Cory did not have a female instructor available but told us to drop by his shop and let granddaughter look around and he could tell her what she would be experiencing if she took the lesson, so we did just that! I'm telling you from the time we left his shop until the lesson was over everyone at Whitlock went above and beyond of giving this little girl the time of her life. Due to an illness my granddaughter was diagnosed with a year and a half ago this little girl hadn't really been active at all. Whitlock gave her trust, confidence and joy... and first time out in the water she was up on the board, and she stayed up. What an amazing day , Cory was super friendly and personal upon my arrival made me feel totally welcomed and calmed my nerves about the day that awaited me. Within 30-45 minutes you are out on the water after your class on the fundamentals. Hana was my instructor, she had me catching waves right away and most notable after her notable corrections she had me STANDING ! This was my first time attempting to surf and I am not sure if it was Carl's great teaching or I was just a pro surfer in a past life but I stood up on my first wave and took waves like 80% of the time! We had a pretty short lesson on shore and the hit the waves for the rest of the time and Carl and I think his name was George, helped give us tips in the water. If you ever wanted to surf, Whitlock is the way to go. So fun!! I took a surf lesson for the first time with Whitlock this weekend. It was soooooo awesome!! I always wanted to try, and Oceanside is a perfect place to surf. You meet at their store on Mission St, grab a wetsuit and get to check out some sweet surf boards. There's even a super small board that was the first board Cory, one of the owners of this family run business, had - at age 2. It was a nice touch. At the beach, we spent a couple minutes learning some basics like how to stand and lay on the board, and then we went into the water. We started on beginner boards which helped to learn to stand up. I was standing after a couple waves! Rodney, the instructor, had a great way of teaching how to stand up. I'm not super athletic, and it was really doable. He is a great instructor, and really knows his stuff. He teaches in a really easy to get way. And was giving more advanced people in the group great tips for their level. It was seriously so much fun, getting out there, standing up and riding the waves in. Awesome surfing experience!! I also got to check out their workshop, where they make RW Surfboards. These are all hand crafted, and there's obviously so much care that goes into making the custom boards. It was really awesome to see these too. The whole thing from start to finish was such a great experience. I'd recommend them to anyone who wants a great surf lesson! These guys are awesome!! read more

Patient- Fun-Knowledgeable My fiance and I did the surf lessons last week and everything was great from start to finish. They were super friendly as soon as we walked in and the whole experience was the same. The wetsuits were great and they drove us to the beach with the boards on a cart. The lessons were short and easy and we were in the water right away. Captain Ron was the best teacher- never got frustrated with us and had a great attitude the whole time. We were able to stand up on our first try! Ron was patient and gave us each one on one time. The "PARTY WAVE" where he had all 4 students get up on one wave. Signed up for a surf camp. Due to pandemic, had to first check in at the shop before proceeding to beach in own vehicle. Randall exhibited the best in customer service in terms of thoroughness (waiver) and attentiveness (sizing of wet suit and T-shirt as well as directions to beach). The store had a large selection of today's variety of apparel and customized surfboard production, you would be remiss not to check it out. Ty was my instructor and from the get-go, he commanded respect and attention. His mastery and passion of the sport were evident. An experienced instructor, he was quick to issue helpful tips and information on how to catch a wave, water safety, how to carry your surfboard and surfing techniques. His precise and succinct instructions paid off handsomely when I was able to pop up at my first wave. [A big personal accomplishment as I was probably one of the oldest surf client at Whitlock]. Highly energized and a constant motivator, he observed and surgically brought to attention areas which I needed improvement. Out of the water, he was personable and demonstrated a very high attitude for hard work as evidenced in collecting the loaner apparel, helping to put the surfboards in place as well as negotiating equipment rentals for walk-in clients. Carl and Rodney are the best! My cousin and I got a groupon for 2people for a 2hr lesson. When we got to the beach, Carl and Rodney made sure we got down the basics and helped us catch our first couple of waves. When they caught me needing some extra help, they gave me constructive tips and helped me catch more waves.
