Mike was the surf instructor today for my almost 9 year old son and myself (40 y/o). My son is 4'10" & about 87 lbs, and I'm 6'2" barefoot and 220 - 225 lbs, and we were both beginners having never surfed before. Mike has such a kind, pleasant, and encouraging personality. I truly couldn't have asked for a better surf instructor. He helped my son to be able to stand and ride a wave at very least seven different times, which meant everything to me. Mike's instructions prior to surfing were perfect, and I wish I would have just followed them more exactly. I was able to stand up and ride the wave for a very short while 5+ times. My son was able to ride a wave standing up all the way into the beach, which was about 50 feet riding the wave standing. It was absolutely AMAZING! Unfortunately we didn't get video of that one, but there will be other times in the future. Make sure to ask for Mike, because he has a wonderful personality, and he works so well especially with kids but also with adults. You can tell Mike is really fit, and he physically does so much to set you up perfectly for the right waves at the right times. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed Jason's surfing for empowerment experience on Airbnb and highly recommend it. While visiting from out of town, I wanted something unique to do, but I did not know how profound this experience would be! The entire lesson was insanely impactful and eye-opening. In my first ever surf lesson, I was able to get up on a longboard and catch several 1-3 foot breakers. Success! Daniel was fantastic instructor. He gave me enough guidance to be comfortable getting in the water, which didn't take long. He helped me find waves and know when to paddle and stand. He gave me a push to help me catch the waves. I'll need to learn to do these things on my own eventually, but for a first lesson, it was nice to have the "training wheels". I got a real taste of what surfing is all about, so I'm motivated to keep it up. The lesson itself was a 5-star experience. That was my whole interaction with Daniel, who was fantastic. Other the other hand, the customer service before and after the lesson was a nuisance. I was rebuked excessively for merely asking if it was possible to reschedule 20 hours before my lesson. I get it, it's important to keep each schedule slot filled. But when I'm dropping $150 on a 2-hour lesson, I expect to feel respected--not belittled or judged for asking a question. There is also a lot of upselling: online, on the phone, and over text message. Before and after the lesson. This makes sense: I would benefit from more lessons, and the lesson was good. Just something to be aware of. You'll be asked to pay everything up front: a deposit on the website to secure the booking, followed by a Venmo/Cash/Zelle payment at least a day before the lesson. We had the pleasure of getting 4 surf lessons for our 8 year old son with Encinitas Surf Lessons. It was an extremely fun and empowering experience for him and I truly believe he will remember it forever. We had Christian for his first session ever and Aaron for his other three. They helped give him a run down on land and in no time he was catching waves and feeling confident. Even when he crashed in the water, he popped right out and was excited to go back to his teacher. LOVE MY EXPERIENCE WITH ENCINITAS SURF LESSONS Surfed with Owen a month ago for four-day private session. I have surfed in Mexico, Hawaii and San Diego and had experiences hiring a private instructor with me. The thing I have learned is you can't really fake passion for surfing, compassion and kindness towards the students. The level of commitment Owen had to make sure I was able to learn and challenge myself is really apparent, and really shows how much he dedicates to his students as well as being responsible for them. He was able to adjust to the progress I had and to get me to better and nicer spot to push me to surf and improve. I've had my kids in lessons elsewhere and never got the time, attention and caring that was shown to me and my children. Jason scheduled us in late the night before. We were SO lucky to have Aaron and Chad were our instructors for the day. They were simply awesome! * They spent extra one on one time with 15 year old, even taking him to the outer waves. Start to finish, he was delighted. * They took my 12-year old daughter and got her up on her first wave. She rode waves for the entire time and was smiling the whole time. * They were so patient and positive with my grumpy, video game playing, 14 year old (who general hates sports and wanted nothing to do with surfing),encouraged him and helped him...30 mins in, he was riding to the shore. I had a great experience with instructor Miguel. I may not be the usual client as I'm a little older (47) but he was very patient with taking our time (waiting for me to catch my breath.) I've always wanted to try surfing and this was a perfect introduction to the sport. We started with some basic instruction on the beach and moved into the water after about 15 minutes. Miguel was very good about explaining paddling and helping me maneuver the waves. After 4 or 5 tries I was able to stand up and it felt awesome! We were referred to Encinitas Surf Lessons on a Family Vacation as my daughter that was 9 years old was interested in taking her first lesson. It was super easy to set up the lesson (private), and the instructor was easy to coordinate with on the front end. Already an amazing experience. Now, during the lesson is when it got even better. They were super kind to her, very supportive, and worked with her to not only have a great time, but really learn how to surf! My sister and I went out to surf for the first time ever with our instructor Dylan. We started off with dryland basics like pop ups on land before we suited up and went into the ocean. I have grown up in San Diego my whole life but cannot believe I haven't surfed once! Especially living less than a mile from the beach. I recently moved up to San Francisco where me and my boyfriend have had the itch to learn how to surf, so we decided to travel down to SD to visit friends and family and came across Encinitas Surf Lessons. I felt like I hit the jackpot when I found Jason! My boyfriend and I surfed all 3 days we were visiting and loved every second of it, I even got my brother to surf with us the last day since Jason and Owen were so great to us the first 2 days. Jason is a true professional and knows what he is talking about, he truly cares about your form and has no problem correcting you... over and over - but that is what you need to get better! I can't say enough about Jason, Daniel and Chilka. My neighbor and I signed our 9yo boys up for a 3-lesson series. The first thing I noticed was the level of communication. Jason and his crew were always communicating updates via phone, text and their automated scheduling system. We were never in the dark and they were super flexible and accommodating of our schedules. The second thing I noticed was the quality of the gear. I've previously taken lessons with other outfits and I was subjected to gnarly wetsuits and worn out foam boards. The wetsuits and boards provided by ESL appeared to be new or close to it so no gross out factor there. They showed up for every lesson with boards and suits specifically sized for each of our boys. They use a higher quality Stormwave boards as opposed to the inexpensive Wavefront boards from Costco. Daniel and Chilka provided lots of energy, great instruction and our boys were engaged and had a blast. Both instructors tuned in quickly to the boys' ability and introduced them to additional skills as son as they were individually able instead of taking a one size fits all approach.
