This deli is a hidden gem! The building is beautiful on the outside and when you walk in it seems smaller than you would expect. There are plenty of tables to seat yourself. The girl behind the counter was very friendly and gave us time to look over the menu since it was our first time there. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak with pasta salad. The pasta salad was the best I've ever had! Nice and fresh and had a lovely taste to it. The meat on the cheesesteak was cooked just right and also had great flavor. My husband and I got an early start to finish getting pictures of large things in town, stopped by for breakfast and largest W's! Everything was amazing, staff very nice and personable, shop clean and whimsical with a lot of W things! I had a breakfast bowl which was excellent, fresh and flavorful. What a darling spot!! ohh my gosh where do I begin? We found this little cafe on our way to visit the "big things in the small town" (like windchime, ruler, mailbox etc). and boy is it cute! A small wrap around porch greets you when you enter the place. You can order from the counter any number of simple yet tasty breakfast and lunch combos. Sandwhiches, chips, soup, salad etc. All the main staples done really well. And even some with a twist (like blueberry applesauce!) The icing on the cake? You can get an entire meal for about $4-5, making it a phenomenal deal as well. The staff are so quick and courteous, the environment is so welcoming, and we just had a great time. Honestly, so disappointed. Ate here for lunch this past Saturday and my child's grilled cheese was "done" before we could even get to our table. As I thought, the cheese wasn't even melted! All the food looked unappetizing and tasted very bland. Iceberg lettuce. The bakery aspect was very small (and underwhelming) and everything was wrapped in plastic. Super disappointing. The one really nice feature about this restaurant was the covered porch with ceiling fans. Unfortunately, I won't be returning on future visits to this adorable town. read more

We ate here one day while passing through and exploring the town. I liked the feel of Whitling Whimsy - it felt like being in a log cabin, plus that small town feeling. Not too crowded, and the people were nice. We ate outside on the patio with a view of the world's largest wind chimes. I got the club sandwich, which was decent but nothing special. My wife thought her food was very average too. The best thing I can say about this place was their prices. My wife, daughter and I all ate there for less than $20. That's less than I'd pay at a fast food place. I would give them another chance, but maybe not before exploring some of the other options in town. read more

My wife collects travel literature and probably has enough to open a travel agency. So, as we're driving across SE Illinois, she tells me about the town of Casey, IL that has a collection of the world's largest "things". Seems that the gentleman who owns the Whittling Whimsy Cafe has constructed the world's largest (as certified by Guinness Book of World's Records) wind chime, golf tee, rocking chair, pitchfork, pencil, birdcage and mailbox. He also has the world's largest pair of clogs but they're in the candy store which was closed by the time we were here. We also missed the world's largest knitting needles but may have seen them and mistook them for telephone poles. The town of Casey is literally just off of I-70 and all of his creations are located within about a mile radius. In fact, with the exception of the golf tee and pitchfork, all of the creations are located within a 2-3 block area of downtown. You owe it to yourself to get off the interstate and see these marvelous creations. read more

Visited Casey, IL with my family cause the city is know for random world largest objects throughout the city. We had lunch at Whitling Whimsy, a local cafe in town. My wife ordered the pulled pork nachos, which were ok in flavor. Cheese was not melted cheese, so cheese was somewhat cold. Their soup of the day was cheesy chicken and rice. Had I heard the word cheesy from the employee, then I wouldn't have ordered the soup. Nonetheless I did, and it sure was cheesy. It was like sipping velveeta soup. Their Classic Club was a very basic sandwich, had a nice toast to the bread. I had to try their homemade rice crispy treat, and that was delicious. Overall, the food quality is more basic than what I had anticipated. read more

Scored the deals of the day here while visiting Casey's "World's Largest" attractions. Purchased a bottle of water and two sweet treats for less than $2.25! I even asked the young guy checking us out if the total was correct. Haha. I'm used to Chicagoland prices. Friendly kids working on a Saturday afternoon and the cafe is super clean and the ambiance is quite nice. The cafe is located directly adjacent to the World's Largest Wind Chime. We also picked up our site seeing map here at the cafe. Highly recommend. They had a lovely menu and are in a great location; within in walking distance of nearly everything on your map. read more

Passing through and did not want fast food but it's what I got. Cafeteria-style serving food. I got a nasty Roast beef and Cheddar on an onion roll. It tastes like rubber so it's pressed beef and fat like that roast beef chain RB's. Did not finish it. But, the small salad was green and the iced tea was good. I posted a review on another site (ggl), and all the owner (or whomever) had to say was "sorry you did not like it". Nothing like.... please contact me so we can make it right or come back so we can redo it. We should have gone to the Sub (Way) up the street and got the real roast beef. Everything was great, but I'd especially recommend the French toast and omelettes. It is connected to the visitor's center and world's largest wind chimes, so there is a lot to take in and read if you're waiting. We stopped in to Whitling Whimsy after coming to Casey for the various "World's Biggest" items and working up an appetite. We ordered three different sandwiches, each with a side of either chips or pasta salad and a cup of soup. The Thanksgiving turkey, chicken salad, and fried bologna sandwiches were all simple but tasty. The pasta salad was serviceable and slightly sweet. The tomato basil soup could have used a little more salt and pepper (and there wasn't any on the table outside where we sat), but that was my only gripe with the food. Service was great, in spite of it being a very busy Saturday afternoon with the restaurant packed with people coming into town for the same reason we did. We got our food fast and with a smile. The inside of the restaurant did have a faint "overworked grill" smell, but since it wasn't overpowering and there were plenty of seating options outside on a beautiful day, we didn't mind. I'd be curious to see if the smell is still present on a less-busy day. I don't know when I'll be back to Casey, but if I do return, I'll stop by again for another sandwich and to try the coffee/baked treats. read more

I stumbled across Whitling Whimsy during a spontaneous pit stop. The cafe was so welcoming and peaceful. The decoration of the cafe was very fun to look at while enjoying our food. The food was delicious, quick, and just what we needed to get us through to our destination, all for a great price! I had the chicken salad sandwich and the cheesy chicken rice soup. My friend had the chili. It did not disappoint. The staff was pleasant, informative, and inviting. What a treasure for this town. We stopped just off the interstate for gas and decided to drive into town to find a local mom and pop place to have lunch. We found it and so much more. This place has great food at a great price and a fun atmosphere. And then there is the town of Casey, not to be missed with their worlds largest stuff. Spent some time just walking around town enjoying. I highly recommend this as a get off the beaten path place to visit.
