Whities is my first choice to get live food! We have been purchasing live food for our Beardie for two years here! The drive is an hour, but we take the time to do it because we know the live food is well cared for! The crickets and worms are ALWAYS LIVELY!! The price is reasonable and the staff and cashiers are always beyond friendly!!! Something that irritates me, BUT IM GRATEFUL FOR... Good: large selection of pet supplies, reptiles and fish. Bad: I've gone here since I was a kid and it was on the other side of town. I also remember the parrots at the front of this store. The service has gone down hill. The fish department is just... yikes. I've been in several times this month as I'm setting up and cycling a new tank. I purchased the tank here and wish I hadn't trusted them so much. I got the tank to start a neocaradina colony. This tank is not suitable for neos and was missing parts such as intake guard and beta flow nozzle. It's loud as hell indicating something isn't right. They said 30 day return policy but failed to mention the tank had to be unused in its original packaging. Sooooo my shrimp tank is missing key parts and is loud as hell but these tanks are typically quiet. Annnnnnd it's not suitable for shrimp. Also no one asked if I needed help I had to hunt someone down which seemingly annoyed them. The cashiers have always been friendly and helpful. Fish department is just... not what it used to be. When I asked where the neos were the guy just pointed down the row of fish and said, they're down there. Okay... lots of possibilities but okay. Good luck getting help with the aquatic plants. I was also severely disappointed to see Whitie's beta care. They have overly small tanks with betas which just keeps reinforcing improper beta care. On top of that the bettas that aren't in a tiny display tank are in even smaller cups than Petsmart! They can't even swim in a circle they are literally in small drinking cups. Most of them show signs of distress like fin clamping and their water was gross. This isn't okay. It's not terribly difficult to start a beta rack. They have such good care for their other animals. This was disappointing to see especially because they have other aggressive fish in proper sized tanks. Overall disappointing to see this and totally irritated to buy a 200.00 tank to learn it has missing parts and a return policy that was not at all clear. I hope they get their poops in a pile because this experience left a bad taste in my mouth in what has otherwise been a classic store my whole life! read more

Another great experience here. I get my 2 dogs their dry kibble here. The 10th bag is free! There is usually not too many people inside and I was in and out in 5 min. The prices are reasonable too with plenty of uncovered parking and wheelchair access. read more

I bought 2 female rats from here. Had them for 2 months already had a mammory tumor that needle removal. I love my rats dont get me wrong. But when I first got my rats I didn't know much at all but now that I do this where I take issue. I had an employee tell me a bird cage is suitable for a rat, its not and then I was sold a tiny cage told it was enough space it wasnt. My rats now have a critter nation. My rats struggle with human interaction and are pretty anxious despite care. I will say they have a great selection of toys and treats that I have purchased alot of . I have seen sick rats as well that I had to tell a bunch of employees about to get her help. The first girl just sad he was hot. He had a respiratory issue. Idk what their breeding is like or the genetic history . So be cautious on live stock. But most employees are amazing and helpful and know about pet care. I get stuff for my fish here and I will say that I love that sell them bonded. Its not all bad my grip is more about live animals. But overall its okay read more

Went early on a Sunday morning, they open at 10am. I get my rabbit nails trimmed here, walking past the bird section with my carrier and greeted by two associates who were so excited to see a couple rabbits. As noted in other reviews my rabbits are a bit of a handful to get their nails trimmed but the girls did a great job being patient with them and took great care to get them trimmed properly and carefully. In and out in about 10 minutes, picked up some hay and toys. Again the friendliness and care the two associates had was great, great job. Good selection of rabbit/small pet rodent stuff, better then the big box stores in town, nice to have someone who caters to a pet population that is generally underserved, thanks for taking care of my little buddies, they are happy and hopping around with a fresh mani pedi, some new toys, and some new grass. read more

We bought our little Scruffy here two years ago Xmas. It was a great experience all around. She was the LAST cat left just the day before Christmas and she hovered in the back in a corner, so scared. The young employee helped to get her in a box so we could see her and start the paperwork. The process of adoption was great at Whities. They care where their pets go,but they make it easy to complete all the necessary paperwork if you're qualified. She was so scared when she got home, and it took a while to build her trust, but today, she thinks she is the Princess, runs the roost, struts still swaying her hips, and our male, HOBO, which is another rescue cat we got at Home Depot, loves her. As so we. I'll use Whities again for sure. read more

what an amazing aquatic selection: rare tank sizes from japan & the usual top fin sized tanks; aquatic plants, fish food, accessories. whitie's pets has the largest selection of aquarium lights under one roof. there's also an amazing selection of indoor tropical plants: rare hoyas, spider plants, lipstick plants, pothos, philodendrons & more. not even the local nursery i go to stocks hoyas! their harness & crate selection for dogs is impressive. finally found a good sized crate & xs harness that fits our tiny chihuahua. there's a great selection of colors. we needed to get new toys for our cockatiel & wow, the bird section is amazing: toys, food, a variety of cage sizes. customer service is the best. very helpful & friendly, especially at the check out section. at checkout there's a small little box where you can donate to help senior dogs, i was so happy to see that. i'm sure whatever you need pet wise, you'll find it here & you'll stay just to look at the critters. read more

I am a new pet owner for the first time in over 15 years I recently adopted a rabbit and rabbits are often forgotten by big box stores and pet stores but I love that Whitie's caters to exotic and small pets too. If you have a rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, mice or rats then you must shop here. Oxbow is a well known small animal brand and whitie's carries their entire product line. Anything that I could not find at Petsmart was here! The prices are competitive with big petstore prices and Chewy.com. This is going to be my go to pet store. read more

We have purchased fish, cat supplies, rat supplies, snakes gift cards and have had lots of questions that are crazy sometimes, yet the staff is always great and helpful amazing customer service. Love this local store, they've got goods for every imaginable pet. I come in every few months for toys for my cats. Prices are comparable to the chain pet stores in town so there's no reason not to shop local! I love looking around at the animals, especially the store cats who lounge around the store (and not kept in a closet like some places). I went yesterday looking for a fish tank pump for 120 gallon tank. I was told to go to the fish department that makes sense right? Except the kid that was putting supplies away barely acknowledged me acted like I was bothering him! He was of Zero help I walked out! I will order my pump on Amazon at least I expect to get ignored there!!! By the way the pump is al most 400 Dollars. I called pior to coming in specifically needing help with finding a lamp for a turtle. I seen they offer order pick up but they have no items available for me to see so I can order anything online so I didn't know what to ask for. The lady who answered the phone was rude and didn't want to help. She just said there's a wide variety of lights and the price ranges but never offered to help me pick out an item because idk what I needed she just wasn't willing to continue paying me any mind. I suffer from chronic pain so it's hard to just get up and shop around. I still showed up and the prices are double the asking price of other stores also in store there was no customer service what so ever! Not a hello can I help you? or welcome in! Amazing pet store with anything and everything a pet owner would need to make your furry friend happy and healthy. They have a wide selection of birds, rodents, fish and reptiles. They'll even have the occasional felines and fowl depending on the season. They have a vast selection of fresh water and salt water fish. The area itself is a little dark and it can be difficult to get an employees attention at times, but most are knowledgeable and helpful. Turns out I noticed I was not refunded not only my strips but another item I do not know. So they kept $15.00 from me rounded. Still have not found the strips and did not notice the cashier did not scan an item I did return after asking to process a return. Sad that I can not get not even the other item money refunded - I was too caught up with poor management I didn't notice they literally took another $7.00 from me Total I didn't get refunded $15 of my $90 purchase. What prompted me to start shopping here regularly was because of the fact that it is local of course and they carry the Wellness food I feed my cats that I just could not find in the chain pet stores. They have a frequent buyer program on certain food brands which will help you save money which is pretty cool. It is a welcoming environment with knowledgeable staff. Cant remember a time when I wasn't greeted with a smile and positive demeanor. I had an aquarium and purchased most of my fish here. As you may or may not know you can't just throw different breeds of fish together. One must become acclimated with the different types of fish and their behavioral traits and the staff was very helpful to me! Now, I do agree with some of the other reviews pointing out the interior. After so many years it could use a little face lift. Maybe new flooring, a fresh coat of paint and spruce up the sad-looking aviary. In spite of that, this is still my go-to pet store. read more

My dad rescued a dog out of the blue so I needed to get supplies on his first day home. Not wanting to leave the dog alone I called this store to say "I know this is a stupid question but can I bring my dog in with me?" The person who answered laughed and told me of course as long as they're on a leash. I already appreciated not feeling like an idiot as I assumed they get that question all the time and are sick of it. The layout is slightly confusing at first. The dog toys/treats were all in the middle and my puppy had a good time walking around and sniffing all the loose bones/hides. Then the dog food is in the back and it's all a bit overwhelming, as everything is stacked and the variety seems endless. I settled on a bag and took everything in front where the woman who helped me was so nice and talkative. She told me about their dog food rewards where you buy X amount and get one free, which is awesome considering the bag is about 40 bucks! Most of all, I love the family owned history behind the store. Definitely a bonus to spending your money here!(trust me with all the cute doggie toys it's easy). I'm sure my puppy will love his next trip here. read more

One of the best pet stores in fresno! Always greeted warmly when you walk in and provided the best customer service. The selection here is so large and diverse. Any pet that you have, they have an extensive range of products for them from food, caging, and toys. They're always getting new stock as well. They have so many animals and are always getting more. They put their animals in decent/spacious enclosures throughout the store to look at. They no longer allow you to touch the animals, though, unfortunately. Prices are decent, and they have programs for frequent buyers. The employees seem to actually care and have knowledge of the animals they care for. The only gripe I have here is that I don't agree with how they "store" their betas. As many pet stores do, they out their betas in a singular clear cup because betas tend to be aggressive with other betas in an enclosed space. Many of those betas looked miserable and were sunk to the bottom like they were dying. There are other ways to "store" betas for purchase. Nice and large selection of pet supplies for all needs and at a great price! read more

Went in today to purchase some more fish for my tank. I had never been in this store before and wow they have an amazing selection of fish and accessories! Definitely gained another customer just because of the selection alone. The tanks were all clean and there were so many employees on the floor which was great. All of the guys in the fish section where very helpful and grabbed my fish as soon as I asked. The cashier wasn't rude but also not friendly per se, she ignored me and talked to another cashier about switching spots instead. But overall it was a great experience! read more

I love this Pet Shop as I come here to have some animal therapy once in a while. I came here in May 2018, I've gone to quite a few pet shops to see the animals and I was wondering if this pet shop had any puppies but unfortunately they didn't just cats. This pet shop has been here since I was a little girl and sadly I've only been here 2 or 3 times when I was a child since I was a crayfish owner as a little girl. I am not a full grown cat person only little kittens as they are so cute! The cats were calm and I think one actually liked me. I was surprised that this pet shop had chickens and roosters...or maybe they were big chickens? Who knows but I thought that was different. Surprisingly the baby chicks were so cute and cheap! I wonder if someone wakes up and is like I'm going to buy chicks today...but it probably happens. They have your typical Rodents here, eats, Guinea pigs, hamsters and other critters. They actually have a reptile section which I was so tempted to walk out with a sea turtle. They had a fish of all types and I love the Nemo looking fish, angel fish glow in the dark. They have all the typical pet needs. The staff was very friendly. I will definitely be back to get some animal therapy when I need it! Eventually one day I will get a pet and be an actual pet owner. However, definitely come here if you need pet supplies and want to look at cool animals that they have in stock. read more

So I randomly found a gecko in my house and I didn't know what kind it was. I went to my local pet store and they refused to help me because I didn't buy it from them. But I went to Whites with the picture I took and the young gentleman in the reptile department helped me and really came through I got to give that guy 10 stars if I could because I feel so much better about my knowledge of taking care of this reptile. I enjoy coming here to get the equipment and fish food I need for my tank. The staff at the aquatics department really know here stuff and is genuine oh helping you. The love seeing the tanks that the staff put to together for display. It gives a visual of what you can do for aquatics enthusiasts. Some are also on sale, so you can take the tank as is which is nice because they done all the work for you. They have a good selection of fish from salt water to fresh water. Pretty good size reptile department as well with a staff who knows those animals well. Overall my favorite pet store to go to. read more

The good: Their fish selection is the biggest in the county. They have a constant supply of all kinds of fish. The employees in that department are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. They are more than happy to help you figure out how big a tank a fish needs, what other kinds of fish it can live with, and what you need to do to care for it. When a fish is unhealthy, they notice it quickly and quarantine the tank. Since that is a pretty common occurrence with fish, you'll always see several tanks marked "NFS" (not for sale) since they don't want to risk selling you an unhealthy fish. Out of any of the other large fish stores in Fresno, I've always had the best luck buying fish from here when it comes to health. They also stock some high quality dog foods. The meh: Sometimes it can be hard to find an employee! Once you do find one though, they are generally very willing to walk around with you and show you where everything is. One time I even asked for one specific 10 cent guppy out of a tank of hundreds of them, and there was no complaint or sigh about it. The prices are a bit higher than other places, not crazy though. The bad: Their return policy is complete garbage. They only guarantee their freshwater fish for 48 hours while every other place does a week. And you need to bring a water sample with you to prove that you're running a perfect tank. Basically, they'll do anything to deny giving you a replacement fish. It's disappointing to see such sleazy tactics from an otherwise great establishment. Minus one star for that, but can't dock them much more since they're overall leaps and bounds better than any other place around. read more
