My nail tech Mina recently relocated to White Wings Salon after her previous workplace, Mint Salon, tragically burned down. She lost all of her tools and supplies in the fire -- literally everything she invested in her business. What made the situation even harder was that the owner of Mint Salon did not refund her for the unused half-month of rent she had already paid, even though the salon burned down through no fault of her own. Despite all of this, she has remained incredibly professional, resilient, and dedicated to her clients. Vera is a very unprofessional hairdresser. I seriously doubt whether she even has a hairdressing license. She ruined my hair -- I was shocked when she used a single pair of scissors to cut my hair bluntly straight, and then used clippers to trim my medium-length hair. I've never seen a hairdresser do something like that before. She even blamed me for not showing her a reference photo of the hairstyle I wanted. read more

She's was super professional and personable, we had some great conversations. I've gone to a ton of hair stylists trying to find a good one and I can say that she is truly passionate about her work. Vera texted me before the appointment which I appreciated. I have straight hair and wanted the layers cut off so that my hair was one length. Vera listened and was thorough getting everything perfectly even and not cutting too much off. I came in with washed hair. She applied a serum before she cut 6 inches off. She was going to blow dry it, but I preferred to let it air dry. She has a strong accent, but there weren't any issues with a language barrier. She has a kind, generous disposition. She didn't talk during the cut which I appreciated so much: it showed me how focused, dedicated, and professional she was. It looks like my family found a great, no-nonsense place to get our hair cuts. I've come here to get my hair cut 2x, make-up trial for wedding 1x, updo trial for wedding 1x, and actual updo for wedding 1x. Hair cuts: WAY overpriced! $45 dollars (I have long hair) just for an ordinary cut, with no wash and no straightening?? Never again. Make-up trial: Mai was the one I scheduled my appt with. Was going to charge me $50 for make up if I also got my hair done with her. Trial was $20, but was not good. Actually, I thought she made me up to look like a geisha - for my wedding. I did not hire her to do my make up. Updo trial: Mai was my lady. Charged me $20 for a trial. Quite pricey, I thought, when other places usually give you free trials? Not sure. I told her I wanted a "soft" look, and she showed me some pictures. I pointed to one, she made it, and I was satisfied. So I hired her for my updo. Actual Updo: The salon does not open until 9am on Saturday. The day of my wedding, that was a bit too late - which made me nervous. But I was able to get in and out without inducing a time crunch later on. I changed my mind about my "soft" look, decided to go with a more "elegant" look. I showed Mai a picture of what I wanted. She looked at it for a while, and tried to figure out how to do it. When she started, she was having A LOT of trouble. At one point, she had to ask another hairdresser for help on how to get my hair the way it looked in the picture. At this point, I was about ready to die, since I did not want to have hideous hair for my wedding. But in the end, my hair turned out beautifully. My mom's hair was also done by Mai, and it also looked great for my wedding. For both of us (me and my mom), she charged us $170. Kind of pricey, but it was my wedding day. Might come back for updos in the future, but the haircuts are totally not worth the money. read more

I have been caring for my elderly dad who has been very ill the last 4 months and have missed 2 haircuts with my regular hairdresser out of state. I was sorely in need of a haircut and a little tlc of my own. She was warm, welcoming, very patient and very capable. I came here twice after a referral from a classmate, but I must say, my experience here wasn't too good. It cost me a total of $45 (including tip) to ONLY cut my hair, (God knows how much they crank up their prices for additional procedures). For my first visit I got a haircut by a very young lady; she was working there for about a month. Although she was fairly new to the salon, she engaged in a lot of conversation and made me feel comfortable. I felt very pampered. She cut my hair the way I somewhat wanted--layered--but it didn't come out the way I pictured/hoped for. I didn't blame her though because my face shape is kind of hard to work with in the first place. I ended up going home and rearranged my hair part and did a lot of experimenting before I felt content enough to let it be. For my second visit I got my haircut from Mai, an older woman who worked there for a longer period of time than the first stylist, but I didn't like the way she cut it. Period. She engaged in conversation as well, making sure that I felt comfortable and all, but the results were no where close to what I had in mind, plus it was too late to fix my hair because she gave me bangs and I didn't want bangs. After my two experiences, I would say that they do excel in pampering and making you feel relaxed+comfortable, but as far as style goes, you have to be very specific about how you want your "do" to look like. I like it when my stylists know what kind of hair styles will look good on my facial structure, but I didn't get that from them. I ended up paying $45 for a layered cut. No shampooing, no straightening, no curling. Just layered cutting. I wouldn't come here again because when I compare the price and the result after a visit, it's not worth the money. (Plus, I'm a college student, so I can't afford that much just for hair). read more

Found my long term hair stylist! I've been going to Farnaz for the last 6 years or so. Having followed her from Khoobsurat and Mint to this new (and better) location and not wanting to go to another stylist says a lot about her. Not only does she do an amazing job with the hair-cuts but has a great eye for the right color and cut for your hair. She takes pride in her work and admires it as much as you would. She'll make sure she gives you all the time you need to discuss the style with her and go over anything after the hair-cut also. Even with spending time with each client, I dont know how she manages to be punctual for the next client. Time management skills? :) The location is great too. Older than the other place but much cleaner and brighter. Not to say you will have no trouble finding a parking spot - this place has plenty! P.S. She does cuts for kids too and is extremely patient with them so 5 stars for that! I used to come here for many years to see Mai, but in the last 2 years, I've noticed that the quality of her work has gone down drastically. She is still very nice, but she gets distracted easily, and my hair doesn't look good afterwards. Sometimes she thins my hair too much. She was unwilling to negotiate with her scheduled apointment but made me wait quite a while. I read a lot of good reviews about this place and decided to give it a try but disappointed with the way Tim treated me as a customer. Five Stars for Tim Acosta my stylist and Four Stars for Whitewings salon. My hairdresser of 15 years recently moved out of the area and she referred me to Tim Acosta at Whitewings Salon off Bollinger Rd. and Miller Ave. in San Jose. What a win! The salon is easy to get to and has a lot of parking - lots of spots in the shade. Everyone is courteous and quiet yet friendly. Tim has done my color twice-there was no indication that I had switched stylist... he matched the color perfectly. I have medium length, long layers and loads of wavy but not coarse hair and am trying to grow it out. That is always a hassle but Tim first shaped it as it grew and after some time for more growth gave me one of the best haircuts of my life! He also cut my daughter's hair... she is a teenager and very particular how her hair is done because she has 3x the amount of hair as the average person in ringlet curls to her mid-back. She gives him too! Only drawback of the salon is that it is not especially clean. They really should invest in a professional crew to thoroughly clean the place then come regularly to keep it that way. read more

CALVIN is by far the best hairstylist I've ever had. I've followed him to 3 different salons over the past 4-5 years!!! I have difficult curly hair that I straighten and had him cut into bob that is shorter in the back and longer in the front (sort of the old Rihanna look) and Calvin was the ONLY person who was able to cut it flawlessly and make it look amazing. I ALWAYS have people asking me who does my hair, and trust me, I've tried lots of salons but I always come back to Calvin. He's very very sweet and even brought me a gift from Vietnam when he went home to visit his family. ALSO, if you EVER need your brows waxed THIS is definitely THE guy to do them! My sister and I both agree that somehow no one else has ever done our brows better. Crazy huh?? He's our unsung hero. My sister drives an HOUR to come see him, since she moved to Pittsburg, CA and she says no one does her hair as well as Calvin does. Give him a try! He's amazing! Also, he's always been great about fitting me in when I call and ask him if I can come right away, so that's AWESOME for someone like me who is working 3 jobs!
