I wanted to trim my long hair and also layer it lightly. I thought this was easy enough so I didn't bring a picture... somehow Shirley interpreted it completely differently and gave me pretty much a mullet in the back with the front really short... I'm starting to think maybe she is only good at cutting mullets. Anyways I came home quite disappointed and wanted to wait a while to see if the hair would grow into the cut. However it was just too ugly and I took the scissors myself and cut the back so that it somewhat matched the length at the front and no longer a mullet. The only unfortunate thing was that now my hair length is a lot shorter than I envisioned. And this cut cost me $70 read more

It was my first time here and I was unsure of what to expect. I came here to get a cut and dye and Shirley did a great job. $55 for the cut and $105 for the dye. The haircut was simple, I wanted a trim and new blunt edge bangs. Most hairstylists oppose to that look probably because they think it looks childish or it's hard to pull off. She did a good job doing exactly what I wanted. Most people don't know how to deal with Asian hair, but Shirley was a pro. For the dye, I just wanted something simple and natural. I had some highlights put in this summer but they started growing out and looking tacky. She did a good job matching dye to my natural hair color. Lin/Lynn gave me a fabulous cut the first time around: side-swept bangs + layered, shoulder-length hair. I came in a couple months later and asked for the same thing and got a mullet instead. Yes. A MULLET--with nice bangs, though. :) I sat in the chair for some time as she looked confused and tried to fix the back. She finally gave up and pretended nothing was wrong by smiling big and charging me $45. I returned to try to get it fixed the next day, and she blamed my jacket for making my hair look like a mullet. Heh??? It maybe was just a fluke and maybe she's good, but no way in a million years am I going to go back to try again. read more

Worst haircut of my life. She rushed through it and kept reassuring me she knows what young people like while chopping away haphazardly at my very long straight hair. Oftentimes she cut when she wasn't even looking, causing cuts to be very uneven, though she assured me that the clean straighter edge cuts were boring and not sexy. She flat ironed the edges to curl them and ended up frying my freshly cut hair, making it feel coarse and dry. (Part of the reason to get a haircut is to have that silky freshly cut feeling!) I ended up with extremely short choppy pieces that stick out on both sides and the back. No layers at all- just choppy short pieces sticking out everywhere. Going somewhere else to try to get this mess fixed. Any recommendations people?? read more

Shirley has taken care of my hair for about 4 years now. I generally go in for a haircut and a color/highlights every two months. During those 4 years, I've gone from doing small trims because I wanted to keep my hair long (about 4 inches past my shoulders) to having more hair cut off to have shorter hair (right at the shoulders). I've gone the route of bangs to no bangs. Each time, Shirley has done a good job. When I first went to see Shirley, she suggested highlights to me. Knowing I was a bit apprenhensive about coloring, she kept the colors pretty conservative and gave me thinner streaks. After these years, it's good to have a stylist who knows how I prefer to have my hair done. Also, when I got married, Shirley did my hair and my sister's hair. Both turned out great. One thing I like about Shirley is that she takes the time on my hair. She spends a lot of time blowdrying/styling the hair. She also enjoys what she is doing. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 stars because, with the frequency, that I get my hair done, the prices add up! But, my hair is one area that I often splurge on. It's best to make a reservation ahead of time. Generally a week ahead of time (for a weekend reservation) is enough advanced time. read more

I decided to go to Calihair based on the Yelp review and how close it was to my house. I had an appointment with Shirley and she spent around 30-40min on my hair. It was a decent amount of time and I got a bob. Throughout the session she kept saying how hard it is to cut a proper bob. Fine, whatever I don't mind if you brag if you do a good job. BUT when she was done, my hair was clearly uneven...I asked her to even them out, and she did. She was alright so I gave her a 15% tip (on a 50 dollar cut). I was a little unhappy since she got loose hair all over me and INSIDE of my clothes. Hair stylists usually wrap that black cape thing over you so it doesn't happen...but it was on so loosely that a lot of hair got in. The shampoo woman was rather lazy...she only shampooed my hair once and didn't really do a thorough job. When I got in my car I wanted to take a look at my hair in the sunlight and I was looking in my car mirror....my hair was STILL uneven. So I march on back and tell her. She says oh yeah coz I was sitting down and asked me to stand to have my hair trimmed. She also said that it's hard since I haven't had a hair cut in the past 6 months...which is ridiculous in my opinion. If you are as good as you say you are....give me a good haircut! I got home and was informed by my boyfriend that my hair was also uneven in the back...I checked in the 3 way bathroom mirror and there was a "fissure" near the right side :( :( :( I regret giving her a 15 % tip and probably won't go back again. read more

I use to go to this place when they were at the old location. Back in the day when I was ok sporting an 80's glam rock haircut. These days after 4 attempts over an 8 month period I've found the stylist that use to be called Caitlyn aka Lynn to everyone else has lost her touch. My last - (I use the word LAST with two meanings) haircut 3 days ago was the most disastrous. I got a cut and color. I think the Matrix coloring system they use is semi-perminent. The color has already faded and my grey's look like blond highlights. Mind you I paid extra for their coveted Lanza shampoo to keep the color from fading too. The cut - sigh - I had to take scissors to my hair to straighten and trim things out. They do this weird technique of taking a chunk of your hair and layering the crap out of it. Then they drop that chunk and go on to another chunk and another chunk. Never mind your eyes are in the way either. If that chunk falls in your eyeballs don't say I didn't warn you. I wonder if they can actually do a straight bob or blunt cut of any kind. Hmmm. It's almost like they rely on this technique to hide imperfections. It didn't work this time around. If you look at the back of my hair it looks like a kid got to my hair while I was asleep. I see why everyone thinks they walked out with a mullet cut. I'm "rockin" that style now too. Been going here for about a year now. The thing I love about Cali hair is that they don't use clippers to trim your hair. Its all done with scissors. Every time I go, I have Raymond cut my hair. He seems to be the best choice to cut a guy's hair. The price is about $25-$30 a hair cut, depending on the amount of work I suppose. A little more than the $7 hair cuts I used to get before Cali Hair, but after getting my hair cut once there, I've become a loyal customer. read more

I went here primarily because my husband is completely loyal to Shirley, who apparently is very skilled at taming his cowlick. I, on the otherhand, was looking for Japanese hair straightening, moisturizing treatment, and highlights. Shirley worked on me all 3 times. She listened to what I wanted and gave me quite pretty highlights. However, they didn't really come out the way she had described it to me. maybe it was a language barrier? the moisturizing treatment was not really memorable, and I'm not sure my hair came out shinier than when i went in. I can't remember how much I paid. The JApanese hair straightening worked out well. I have hair down my midback, and Shirly was able to straighten it without frying it. I now have perfectly straight, shiny hair, and only paid $260. She said she gave me a discount because I have seen her a few times. Overall, if you are looking for special services, this place is cheaper than the fancy non Asian salons out there and is probably comparable in quality. The atmosphere is pretty similar to other Asian hair salons (not super chic), but clean. I have, however, stayed away from haircuts here, mainly because I'm deathly afraid of walking out with a fobby haircut (way too many bad experiences at other Asian hair salons in the past). read more

This review is for a women's haircut with Shirley. I had expected much more from a $50/haircut. I feel like I could have gone to a $20 place and gotten a comparable haircut and level of service. The details: I called to ask for their latest appointment slot in the day since I typically work late. Shirley said she could take me that evening, then proceeded to lecture me on the importance of being on time. During the haircut, to Shirley's credit, she worked quickly and obviously knew her way around a pair of scissors. Unfortunately, she seemed to pay attention to little other than the cut. The cut hair pieces fell all in my face and over my clothes. She must have noticed because she kept adjusting the shoulder cover that was supposed to catch hair, and choking me in the process. While these details are not critical, I was also not expecting to be subjected to physical discomfort when I go in for a haircut. The cut itself was also disappointing. I went in asking for a professional-looking haircut ,and I walked out with a trashy Asian girl mullet. To Shirley's credit though, when I went back, she kept a great attitude, and did her best to fix it free of charge. But the damage was already done, and to be frank, I did not come to a hair salon to have to return later to cover up the damage. read more

I've been wanting to cut my hair for a while now but never really had the time to shop around for another stylist (last place was in Sacramento). My usually hair cut is an A-line but I quickly got tired of that so I wanted something out of my normal. I opted for a very voluminous, layered look. I have very thick hair and wanted to shed some of my hair and get it thinned out. I remember my sister going here when she was in high school, now she's 30 so why not. I booked an appointment on valentine's day at 1pm. No one was there except me so I was a little scared. I told them that I've never been there before and they gave me Karen. She asked me what I wanted and I told her that I wanted a lotttt of layers and a lot of volume on top. She said okay and got to it. Whole process took an hour since I had soo much hair. Raymond really knows about hair and he gave me suggestions of what to do and not to do. By experience I found out he was totally correct. When Raymond took a leave of absence, I started to have Shirley. She is wonderful too, doing something a little different every time. Shirley doesn't talk a lot during the hair-cut which is perfectly fine with me (some people will be bothered). He's the only stylist that I've ever gone to at Calihair so my comments on Yelp are in regards to him as a representative of Calihair only. Raymond is a color and style genius when it comes to hair. Before I went to college, he always gave me the greatest color and cut. I was known for my hair and the great colors and shapes that I had. When I went to college in LA, i tried different places such as Toni and Guy and Vidal Sassoon in Beverly Hills but I was always unimpressed and extremely unhappy with the end result. Let's face it, some professionals can boast about how great they are but when it comes to Asian hair, they are completely clueless when it comes to color and style. Therefore I made the decision that I would always go back to Norcal and get my hair done by Raymond. Hands down, he knows how to do Asian hair and make it look hot! Over the years, I actually started going to W Salon for my color because I wanted to try something new, but I still go to Raymond for my cuts. I've been with Calihair for 10+ years and I haven't had a haircut I've been unhappy with. I usually get my hair cut by Shirley - and she'll give you honest feedback as to which style/length/color of hair would be best suited for you, your face shape, complexion, etc. She doesn't talk much, but puts a lot of time into each of her haircuts, and an equal amount of time and effort on drying and styling afterwards. I recently got my hair re-dyed here and had a very positive experience. They were very thorough with the dye job (no missed spots!), had a huge selection of magazines for you to browse through, and even dipped my hair in serum that's supposed to make the dye last longer. Great treatment. Their price is a little more hefty than your usual Asian haircut spot. I usually walk away paying $60 (after tip) for a haircut, and an add'l $85 for dye job. But for someone like me who doesn't get a trim every 2 weeks, money well spent! read more

Raymond takes 20 years off my face . . . he's patient and good-natured, and a brilliant stylist -- over the years he's never failed to go right to work quietly and intently on my long hair. As I've aged, we've gone to two, sometimes three tones, low-lights and highlights, and he always listens to my little tweaks and ideas (more blonde, more brown please) -- but more importantly, I listen to him -- he makes suggestions and gives explanations - knows why he does what he does - a real professional. . . . we check in, but I'd say don't distract him, he's a pro and very serious about his work. He never shoves products at me, but helps me with what I ask for. Absolutely a delight to work with and depend on! I simply gave her the idea of what what I've wanted, and she understood me well. The process didn't take long, from washing my hair to finishing touch.
