Very disappointing experience! Booked to stay here with my boyfriend for a few nights, and the…read morereceptionist, Kevin, who was super friendly on the phone, demonstrated appalling behaviour on arrival, for no good reason. As we walked in, Kevin asked my boyfriend if he was "happy" and remarked on how miserable he seemed. He wasn't miserable at all, in fact he had been perfectly fine. I had a quite stressful journey over, which I explained to him in a friendly manner, and if anything, we just wanted to put our bags down and relax. We told him we were feeling fine, to which he pulled a face of disbelief and asked us where we are from. He then thought my boyfriend was ignoring him and got huffy about him answering a few seconds late, albeit in a normal, neutral tone. My boyfriend has ADD so a slight delay in response is normal behaviour on his part and he was not trying to be rude or confrontational in any way. Kevin repeatedly remarked on how miserable we, and particularly my boyfriend seemed, meanwhile getting visibly more and more agitated and angry about it, refusing to drop it, which of course didn't make us feel at ease. He was targeting my boyfriend in what I can only describe as a personal attack based on his own presumptions and projections about him, totally unprovoked by any logical means. At this point we were of course feeling rather uncomfortable, as we couldn't understand why this receptionist was so hostile and creating an issue out of nothing. We were not rude, or behaving in any way that would warrant Kevin's exaggerated reaction. I tried to make conversation to defuse the situation, but to no avail. My boyfriend and I exchanged a confused and irritated look, which Kevin saw. Kevin then exploded with anger, shoved my money in my boyfriend's hands and told us to get out immediately and that he didn't want miserable people in his hostel and that my boyfriend should "get a life". I was flabbergasted and asked if we could talk about this, which he refused. He just threw us out on the street, cancelled our booking, with no other place to stay in Brighton, and threateningly told us to stop looking at him and start walking down the street, "or else". You could see the anger in his face and body and I think he would have tried to punch my boyfriend had we not walked away. I have travelled the world and have never ever come across anything that comes close to such unprovoked, rude, unprofessional and seemingly psychotic behaviour from any hostel staff before. I am very shocked, appalled and disappointed by Kevin's behaviour and would not recommend anyone to stay at this hostel as long as he works there!

The owners, Karen and Glen, are very helpful and fun -- they obviously love to travel and with their dogs and adorable son create a really friendly environment. We even went out to dinner with them one night! Can't wait to go back for a kitesurf holiday.

OH my gosh, where should I start? My fiance's family booked…read morea late lunch here to celebrate our engagement so naturally I tried to yelp it but was met with a blank info page :[ Regardless, they had been before and raved about how wonderful the food, service and ambiance of this modernized 17th century country house was so I put on the ever-trusted LBD and went. It truly is out in the Essex countryside so there is only one road to get you there but if you do get stuck behind a Sunday driver (or 3, like we did) try to just relax and take in the gorgeous, timeless surroundings. Once we did arrive, the gravel driveway lead us passed the front of the hall to ample, free parking (which is a rare jewel in England!). We passed the hotel on the way to the main hall which looked to only have about 6 suites and I later learned these are usually booked as bridal, groom and family suites to accommodate weddings. Unfortunately this review will only involve the hall. We met our party in the lobby and were taken to the Garden Room passed the longest, most gorgeous chandelier I've ever seen. The Garden Room was absolutely beautiful as well. My favorite part about it was how the lovely floral fabric of the wall tapestries matched the fabric of the chairs which was actually brought to life in the live, deliciously smelling centerpieces, all showcased against the stark white furniture and wall accents. It was a party for the eyes and was only improved by the view of the gardens outside as well. This Sunday was a set menu but you could choose how many courses you wanted, say if you did not want an appetizer or dessert then you simply don't have to and you're not charged for that course. In our party of 6, only 2 got the pork belly starter and the rest of us simply enjoyed our drinks as they did. Yes, the menu continued like that filled with these bite-size, designer flavor explosions and the staff was very helpful answering my never ending curiosities about each dish. Definitely bring your adventurous palet so you can live large and explore. We all agreed it felt like we were at one of the posh dinner parties on Master Chef. I begged everyone in my party to order something different so we (aka I) could try them all but a few are picky eaters and most ended up ordering the token Sunday roast or the pork loin but I myself had the seared ahi over scalloped potatoes. The fish was delicious and was a perfect portion, my only gripe had to do with this very salty, VERY fishy mousse slathered all over it- I started to wipe it off after a few bites. The fish was fresh & delicious though and everyone really enjoyed their Sunday dinners... I was just loving being in such a beautiful room on a rare sunny Sunday with people I love. A friend told me people have their weddings here which is completely understandable~ I know I would! However, I can imagine it easily costing £50k if not more. The website has tons of helpful information (and swoon-worthy pictures) if you're interested in it but above all things, JUST GO! Its gorgeous, the food is so exciting and posh and the grounds, rooms & staff will make your day.

I never complain in restaurants, but when I called him on his attitude, his response was to double down, glaring at me. The manager came over an the waiter still refused to apologise. The rest of the evening had been fine, but this just spoiled everything. To make it worse, he wasn't our waitress, he just brought us the bill. Cost the woman had served us, her tip. Don't think we'll bother returning.

What is more, the position of the house is amazing. It is not far away from central London. And you can find tube station within 10 minutes by walking. Another good alternative is buses. There are more than 15 different buses near this house that will take you to wherever you want. The house is pretty and very clean. I was happy that I can use the kitchen free. The bathroom is always clean, because the host---James clean it every day. I am very happy with my experience in Woodville guesthouse. The host was very nice and with great hospitality. He cooks very well....to be honest I do miss his food......:-) My trip in London was perfect not only because of the view but also James and his guesthouse. To be honest with every one who will see my review, this guesthouse worth more than the price it charges. After all, highly recommend this place to every one and believe me it will become one of your best experiences in London......

The host rents out 3 rooms in his house, and you have full access to the kitchen and the bathroom. I really liked the arrangement because I could cook me own meals and save some money on eating out. The facilities were clean and well-maintained. The host, James, was very helpful and considerate. He is also very knowledgeable of London, so make sure to ask him for sightseeing suggestions. He is also very smart and pleasant to talk to. Definitely talk to him about art :) The house is situated in Walthamstow, one of the London suburbs. It's a nice neighborhood, there is a huge street market working on High street, so you can get, for example, fruits or other food for cheap. There are also at least three large supermarkets on High street, some pubs and restaurants if you don't cook or prefer eating out. Despite the presence of tha market I didn't have any problems with security, even when I came back late at night. The streets are well lit, there are police patrols, so it indeed feels quite safe. Walthamstow central station is within a 15-minute walking distance. There's a Victoria line Tube station there as well as buses and trains (I've never used the latter). The Underground will take you to King's Cross in 25 minutes and to Victoria Station in 40. The trains go every 3-7 minutes, but, unfortunately, I've found the London Underground to be quite unreliable, e.g. the service is disrupted sometimes -- but that is the problem you will have to face if you're staying in the suburbs (and a lot of other hostels and rentals are situated in the suburbs too). The buses are more reliable but take more time to reach London. There are night buses that run all night and you can use them if you're coming back late (the underground closes at 11pm). Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Woodville Guesthouse. It's a really good alternative to staying at a hotel if you're traveling on a budget.
