The White Lion is a decent pub, certainly worthy of a visit, but its just unfortunate in that its situated in an area so richly adorned with lovely pubs that this one appears more average than it really is. Along the same road as Cask, one of the nicest bars in Manchester and not very far from the award-winning Knott bar, The White Lion is an authentic old-style pub with an extensive drinks range and plenty of custom. They've got a great selection of cask ales, as is fitting with this type of pub, and some of these are even locally brewed. They also serve some Chinese food which is apparently nice, though I have yet to try it, as I find pubs selling Chinese to be a far less appealing prospect than is pubs selling pub food or Chinese restaurants selling Chinese food. Perhaps I'm just too old fashioned.

With a huge beer garden situated within the crumbling walls of an old Roman settlement the White Lion was already something of an attention grabber but when it decided to merge the two best things that can happen on a Friday night, ie beer & chinese food, well.... it turned itself into some kind Men Behaving Badly wet dream. That's right, an actual Chinese take away........ in a pub!* (* for best results read in the style of Jeremy Clarkson) The pub itself is traditional in style and always full of (ever fattening) regulars. It is quite pricey but then so is a taxi to the nearest Chinese at closing time!

Average. I like the big beer garden with the Roman ruins in sight. But White Lion is overcast with the Ox down from it and Cask up from it. Also, when I was in here, I wasn't a fan of the comments made by drunken old men. Very inappropriate and rude. The owner/manager did apologise pathetically and I guess you can't control a drunkard but well it spoiled our drink. Fridays and Saturdays is now a Soul music extravaganza. Shakers, soothers, shufflers and steppers it advertises. Tryng to be a little different then.

The outdoor area is great for drinking cask ales when it's warm, chatting it up with your mates and barking at the passers-by.

Note: this is a breakfast review so may not reflect the pub fully. I was waiting for an event at…read moreMosi, and decided to check out the nearest pub for breakfast options. The menu was pretty standard, so I quickly have chosen what to have and went to take a seat. The breakfast was of the right temperature, no twists, does the job. If want a quick fix ( depending on how many people are already there) while waiting for your train or stuff at Mosi, than that's the place; otherwise might want to check out things nearby. The wait was a bit too long - but again, this is a pub, not a breakfast place, so not sure it's fair to expect fast service at this time of day.

Although it's traditional and there's nothing that makes you go wow like some nearby trendy bars, it's definitely this which appeals to me - in fact I found a lovely little table towards the back with a roaring fire which warmed me up on a day when the weather was starting to look rather autumnal. I was served by 3 different staff and all were friendly, polite and welcoming. For some bizarre reason I decided to go for their 2 for £12.95 lunch deal (why I needed 2 courses at lunch I'm not sure but it seemed good value - plus I'd been in meetings all day so needed a fair amount of comfort food) and I went for the ham hock terrine to start with (lovely piccalilli) followed by the steak and ale pie with chips and vege's (devine). The quality and taste was excellent and with a very full belly I felt my work here was done! Speaking of work, it was also a good little spot to work for an hour on my laptop afterwards - with free wifi. That's the right way to blend tradition and modern so as the customer has the best of both worlds :-)

Located in a part of the city that is clearly on the up (just off St Peters Square) it's a traditional boozer of the very old school variety - deceptively sized with a tiny front bar but loads of seating in the back! The drinks on offer are all a little bit stuck in the past for my beer tastes but this isn't a problem for most patrons - they just do lots of bitters, lagers and stouts. I have to say that their beer flights are great value at just over £3.00 where you can get a third of each beer of your choice up to a pint - really good idea and great to see it appearing in more and more pubs! City Arms is somewhere that's cool to pop into if you're after a quick pint or meeting with friends, I just can't see myself wanting to spend all night here - I think I'd get very bored, very quickly of the beers on offer - but this is my own overly pretentious beery opinion!

Cheap drinks as well, and it's 50p for a game of pool. You can also play darts if you want, or just sit there, relax and have a brew. They have a beers garden, and in the afternoon there are a lot of people around smoking and chatting. It's a Joseph Holt pub, so of course, some Manchester Ales can be found, like Maple Moon for instance. Very good beer, I recommend it. All in all, the staff was really friendly.
