Hidden gem in Belleville. Hand packed ice cream, with so many options. My favorite it the turtle sundae it's made with butter pecan ice cream. We recently did carry out here. My husband had the double cheeseburger and fries. He said it was one of the best burgers he's ever had. I had the fish platter with fried mushrooms and hush puppies very tasty. The fish tallapia sandwich smelled like it was turning bad, like stagnant swamp water. I could not stomach it. That was a waste of $14.00. Then I was charged another $8.00 to get a hamber instead. My husband talked to the manager, (girl with long blond hair) as I don't know her name. He told her that he didn't think it was right to charge me again since the fish was bad. She just looked at him blankly and asked, "Would you like an ice cream?" We didn't come for ice cream this evening. We came for dinner and were very disappointed. They have the best soft serve ice cream around! Even if you don't love it, get it! This is a family-owned establishment that's been around for many years. Closes during the winter and is booming during the summer. I've eaten the food here as well and it is, we will say, mediocre-at-best. My review is based on their ice cream and desserts. Not that I have tried them all, but I have certainly put a dent in their menu and they serve up big portions at a good price. They have indoor and outdoor seating areas and they even accommodate your pets. They always have water bowls outside for the dogs and even serve up an ice cream Scooby Snack treat. Maybe its because I spent most of my high school years working here, scooping ice cream and serving traditional diner food, maybe its because on a hot summer night nothing beats two scoops of home-made ice cream in a waffle cone (I prefer the Cherry Garden), but its probably just because The White Cottage is a quant place in the heart of downtown Belleville which is completely unpretentious and completely delicious. The White Cottage has a tiny dining room and you can dine-in or carry out any night of the week. They serve diner favorites like cod sandwiches, grilled cheese, patty melts, and good ol' hamburgers. They also make their own home-made ice cream on the premises and also serve a whole range of ice cream treats like concretes, milkshakes, and home made ice cream sandwiches (soft serve between two chocolate chip cookies). There are long lines starting from about April until October, but it's definitely worth the wait. read more
