Where I live now, there are no White Castle restaurants. Fortunately, I can still get White Castle hamburgers and cheeseburgers in the freezer section at Harris Teeter. However, given the opportunity to enjoy freshly steam-cooked sliders right out of the box--I'll take it every time! I lived close to this White Castle and would frequently go through the drive-through or eat inside the restaurant. It was always a great traditional Americana experience that tickled my taste buds! This White Castle on U.S. Route 22 in Union, New Jersey, is a piece of classic American roadside culture. What makes it particularly interesting is its location along one of New Jersey's most historically distinctive commercial highways. The original White Castle hamburger, affectionately called a "Castle" by many of us longtime customers, is what most people today call a "slider." These small, soft, onion-flavored hamburgers have remained remarkably close to the original concept introduced in 1921. What makes them distinctive isn't just their size. It's the unusual way they're cooked, their soft buns, and that wonderful combination of beef, onions, and pickles. I believe that is 1949, White Castle began introducing five holes into its thin, square hamburger patties, allowing steam to pass through the meat and eliminating the need to flip the burgers. The hamburgers cook over a bed of rehydrated onions, with steam carrying that delicious onion flavor through the meat and into the buns. The buns warm over the cooking meat, absorbing the steam and flavor, while a dill pickle adds just the right touch of acidity. The result? That unmistakable White Castle taste! Each little Castle comes in its own small cardboard box, and they're cleverly stacked inside the bag. I still remember the famous slogan, "Buy 'em by the Sack!" And believe me, it's easy to understand why! Besides my love of the "Castles," I'm also a big fan of their chocolate milkshakes--DELICIOUS! However, a word of caution: These milkshakes can be EXTREMELY thick, almost like ice cream in a cup. My advice? Ask for BOTH a spoon and a straw! On this visit, I went through the drive-through and ordered four hamburgers (now called "sliders" on their menu) and a medium chocolate shake. Everything tasted exactly as I remembered it from my teenage years, when I first started eating at White Castle. There's something special about returning to a restaurant you enjoyed growing up and discovering that the flavors you remember are still there decades later. For me, White Castle is more than just a place to grab a few little hamburgers--it's a delicious piece of New Jersey nostalgia! Hopefully, I'll have another opportunity to visit this White Castle the next time I'm back in my old hometown area. I've been eating White Castle for over 50 years. I'm 56 now thank God. I visited this White Castle the other day before I went food shopping. I ordered 5 cheese burgers with no onions. Each burger only had 1 pickle on them. Since I've been eating White Castle I can remember at least two pieces of pickles on each burger. This is unacceptable! In all the times I've been to WC, this is the first opportunity I've had to try their breakfast sliders. I wasn't very hungry so I only got one and I also had a few burgers and fish to round out my trip back home. I ordered a bacon egg and cheese slider. Which looks exactly like how all of their other sliders look. To me it was the same bread also, which is great because the bread is always soft. The egg was right temp and texture, meaning it tasted like a real egg and not fake. White Castle is the only thing I miss about living in New Jersey. In fact, it may well be the only highlight of living actually living there. White Castle has a cult. Not a cult following, mind you, but an honest to goodness cult that will go to the ends of the Earth proclaiming the greatness of their tiny square burgers. Having been forged into such a cultist by weekly 4 a.m. trips there for most of my teenage life, I can say proudly that this is some of the tastiest, greasiest, most satisfying food you can eat. I was blessed to have it clogging my arteries during my formative years. The meat and cheese are actually high quality compared to other fast food chains, and the sides are as unique (chicken rings) and tasty (surprisingly good mozzarella sticks) as you'll find anywhere. A standard meal there consists of anywhere between four and ten burgers, augmented by a couple of the sides, and the invariable meeting of some dude from your old high school. No matter where you live or how far you drove to get to a White Castle, you will find someone from your high school in there in the middle of the night. It's just how it works. Such is the magic of it. If you've seen Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, the look on their faces at the end of the movie is no exaggeration. I moved back to the area, and as a treat to myself for all my hard work during the move - I treated my friend and I to a Crave Case. I haven't been to White Castle in forever, and I knew the stomach pains from the sliders would be killer, but I had a craving that wouldn't quit. I lived in the area for about 10 years, but on the other side of Route 22 in Union. Now I'm in Roselle Park, on the other side of 22. So my knowledge of White Castle was always: get on 22, get really angry, make a u-turn, get more angry, and finally pull in to the parking lot. But my friend let me in on a secret, the secret of being on this side of 22. There is a back entrance. No need to go on 22! Seriously, this news changed my life. I avoid 22 like the plague. I hate every time I have to get on that road. So we jumped in the car, drove down the street, and hit up the back entrance to White Castle. No anger involved. We got our Crave Case, half with cheese, and it fed us the entire weekend. We had it for lunch, dinner, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There aren't any near my house so mostly I order on the Internet, specify the time I need it ready and then pick it up on the way home. I have never had a problem.
