Holy moly, I haven't been to Whistlin' Jacks in a hot minute. Me and the husband went on a day trip to Bumping Lake and decided to stop by Jacks on our way back. The drinks and food were top notch. We sat on the back patio and had a couple beers and the bruschetta. Omggggg....that bruschetta was amazing. We went back the following weekend to sit in the bar and watch live music and have drinks. The prices were amazing during happy hour and both times the service was phenomenal. If you get a chance to stop in, grab a drink and just walk around the back patio to take in the breathtaking views. read more

My wife--who also happens to be my best friend in the world--and I decided to take a scenic drive over the pass to Whistlin' Jack's. The plan? Eat great food, admire the view, drive home like responsible adults. But then, as we were soaking in the beauty of the river, we had a thought--nay, an epiphany! Why not stay the night? It was a Wednesday, surely something would be open. Turns out, everything was open. This was either the start of a dream getaway or a setup for a horror movie. Excited but comically unprepared, we wandered into the little store, picking up the essentials: tiny toothbrush, toothpaste, firewood, snacks, and, of course, beer--the bare necessities of survival. With our meager supplies, we checked into the Grandview Cottage, feeling like spontaneous adventurers. We lounged by the river, talking and laughing, basking in our impulsive genius. As night fell, we cozied up by the campfire, blissfully unaware that this peaceful evening was about to take a sharp turn into ridiculousness. The Haunted Light Show At some point, I went inside for a snack and the lights went full Pirates of the Caribbean--flickering ominously like ghost lanterns in a haunted mansion. After investigating, we discovered the whole place was experiencing electrical issues. No big deal, just another chapter in our completely unplanned adventure. Enter Gary, the maintenance hero. He stopped by, checked in on us, and vanished back into the night like some kind of electrical guardian angel. He later returned to warn us the lodge was closing early, and we panic-bought more beer, because if civilization was crumbling, at least we'd be prepared. As night deepened, the cottage lights kept pulsating dramatically, like a discount Halloween attraction. Then... boom! Everything went dark. The whole facility lost power. Some might call this an inconvenience; we called it the perfect stargazing opportunity. So there we were: sitting by the fire, listening to the river, marveling at the stars--the perfect Instagram-worthy moment. Then, we ran out of firewood. And as one does, we decided to get in the hot tub, figuring hey, at least the water was still hot. Breaking the Cardinal Rule of Nature Now, let's recap a crucial detail: Leaving an open bag of Doritos in the middle of a pitch-black wilderness cabin with the door wide open is, in hindsight, breaking a cardinal rule of nature--right up there with poking a bear or assuming raccoons respect personal space. It's like sending a handwritten invitation to every forest creature announcing, "Chip party at the Grandview Cottage--BYO tiny paws!" And clearly, our honored guest RSVP'd immediately. The sound of dishes shifting ever so slightly. That was not paranoia. It was an INVASION. Armed with only our phone flashlights, we scoured the room like FBI agents in a procedural drama. I was certain that little guy was going to run up my leg for a different kind of walnut while I was heroically chasing him in the buff. The next morning, we rolled out of bed, showered, threw on the same clothes, and spent breakfast laughing uncontrollably. What started as a simple drive for lunch turned into a legendary survival saga involving power outages, beer hoarding, accidental hot tubbing, and an uninvited chipmunk guest. Would we do it again? I have been going to Whistling Jacks for over 50 years. The old owners were friends of mine. This is the first time since the new owners took over. The new owners have upgraded the restaurant and outdoor area, it is very nice. My son (47 yrs old) and I (75 years old), had dinner there on Friday Aug 1st. 2025. The dinner was good, but the waiter was not. First I was shocked we got in without reservations on a Friday night, that probably wouldn't have happened 10 years ago. The waiter came to our table and said "what do you wanna eat"? My son said we'd like to order drinks first and then the waiter said, in a condescending voice "show me your IDs"! I was speechless, we should have just got up and left, but didn't. We showed our IDs, got our drinks, the waiter brought dinner, but never asked if we wanted another drink, desert or ? When we first arrived there were only 3 tables in the whole dining room with people at them, within 30 minutes we were the only ones left in the restaurant and it was 7:00 on a Friday night. Totally blew my mind. I hear the owners don't live in the area, which may prove to be a big mistake. read more

We heard that this restaurant had improved under new management so tried it out on Easter. What a disaster. Our waitress, Madde, was great, so things started out well. We ordered rack of lamb and halibut. It was nearly an hour before we received our meals and there were only 3 other tables occupied. Both meals arrived raw. Not rare, but raw. We asked that our meals be put in the microwave or oven for a bit longer. About 15 minutes later they came back cooked a bit more around the edges, but still raw otherwise. Madde had the manager come to our table and she looked at the meals and told us they cooked perfectly. Now, I know what raw lamb and raw fish looks like. We couldn't believe she said they were cooked right. One person in our party ordered a well done hamburger and the other two of us brought our meals home to cook ourselves. Had the BEST time this weekend at Whistlin Jack's campsite. I had a hard time finding a camping reservation in the National park, so this was a perfect alternative. Booked 2 campsites for my group of 8 and it was the perfect space on the River with lots of space, including a fire pit and picnic table. It was secluded but also with the convenience of being next door to a little shop, bar, and restaurant (with great food). The location was also perfect - we did a nearby hike at Naches Loop and hug out at Bumping Lake. The staff at Whistlin Jack's was so friendly. I would come back and highly recommend! read more

Stayed in the Selah cabin. $310 a night. First night there the power was off the first 5 hrs. Not they're fault but not mine either. Restaurant not open. Can't cool I'm the cabin either. Ask about roasting hotdogs at fire pit. Gal at front desk said pick a fire pit it's ok. Bought the wood at the store. While walking to the fire pit we asked a man if they had a preference which pit. He came unglued. No fires ! There's a burn ban except in approved fire pits at campgrounds. Ummmmm WJ has campgrounds! Spontaneously drove from Yakima to Whistlin' Jacks this Sunday. It's great to know 45-minutes can find us in a Cascade Mountain environment next to a river, including a small stream with waterfall. Outside seating is available next to the river. What was even more delightful was the casual environment of the bar albeit, on the street side of the property. We ordered cocktails and a Focaccia appetizer to share. Good thing as it was more than enough for two. The bread, tomatoes and balsamic vinegar were all of superior quality. The drinks were garnished with fresh and well-pickled garnish. Truly impressive based on an aged property, tastefully restored several years ago. Thank you to the relatively new-owners. So my sister's wedding was set for September up past Naches on the highway. I remembered how when my cousins would come we would eat at Whistlin Jack Lodge. I liked the location so I made a reservation for myself. I work two jobs and Innever stay over anywhere so I thought maybe I would enjoy a couple of nice quiet nights away from the chaos of a wedding As it turns out, my car broke down the day of my reservation. I didn't know what to do. I had to leave my car at the winery where our group had a pre wedding meet and greet and since I had NO way of getting back.and forth to Whistlin Jack I had to stay at another place that had been rented by my one of my sisters who took pity on me. I called Whistlin Jack's right away to tell them.of the situation, however they had NO pity. They could not cancel my reservation nor would they refund my money. I get it. There is a policy in ace, but they never moved mountains to help me. They didn't move anything. I was so disappointed about this. We had the worst customer service that I have ever experienced. Our family had to cancel our reservation due to Covid and the manager and upper management did not care about our loss of reservation or offer us any reimbursement. They were unwilling to even put the cabin back up as available for someone else to rent. They were rude, disrespectful and had complete lack of compassion for our situation, which was heartbreaking because I have such fond memories of Whistlin Jacks as a child and will now never return. The manager let us know they don't need our business because they are full everyday anyway. We are so disappointed in them. This has got to be the worst hotel my wife and I have stayed at in our 12 months on the road staying at all types of places. The only wifi is in or near the office and that is a close 70 dBm connection (good for email and not much else). No TV, no refrigerator, shades tied to clothes rack to keep them up, tied worn out decor. 1st floor rooms hear any movement on 2nd floor. Stains on carpet. Way over priced. The only positives are the location and the bed was OK. Might be worth $75 per night in the height of the season. Restaurant was over priced for basic average food. Go anywhere else first. read more

We have had several wonderful meals and a great stay in one of the cabins in years past, so for my birthday this evening, we decided to make the trip up for a nice, quiet dinner. It was memorable, but for all of the wrong reasons. We were greeted outside by two employees on their break, smoking cigarettes right in front of the entrance (not even close to the mandatory 25 feet away). When we got inside, we were shown to a table in the front row for what we called "The Housefly Ballet". There were at least 20 flies congregating. Our server, Stormi, was wonderful. She was attentive and professional. She was the only server in the dining room and was handling it very well. Now for the food. My husband ordered the Pot Roast. It was like leather. I could literally hear it squeaking on his teeth. The skin on the potatoes was so tough it was inedible. The gravy was obviously from a mix and was congealed and super salty. His French fries tasted like the oil they were cooked in hadn't been changed in weeks, so the fries had a vague cod/trout flavor to them. I ordered the Chicken "en" Penne with Lemon Chardonnay sauce. (Don't get me started on the extreme lack of any kind of grammatical or spelling correctness on the menu). The sauce was tasty and the chicken was well cooked, but the pasta was cooked to mush and there was four times the sauce that needed to be on the plate - it was soup. I have been coming to the restaurant for over 30 years with my family and now husband. Very little has changed and looks a bit shabby. I've never has issues with the restaurant and for the first time my husband and I stayed in the hotel. All things considered the area is beautiful and we enjoyed walking around. We were very disappointed in the hotel room. Bathroom was from ghetto 60s as were the towels. No landline, no TV, no cell reception no microwave. I can live without all the items but a phone. I kept thinking what do I do in case of fire? Run doe the road to the fire station when the lobby close? Basically if you need to stay, choose a cottage. read more

My husband and I stayed in the 8-room lodge (there are also cabins available), which was clean and comfortable. The room was huge and featured a large bay window/windowseat that overlooked the river beyond. The setting overall was very pleasant, with some gardens and grassy play areas along the river for guests to enjoy, as well as the beautiful trees and a hot tub. We were less impressed with the restaurant, which was pricy and had a fairly typical menu consisting mostly of meat and seafood. The rib special was drawing a huge number of people in and that may have been better, but I don't like ribs and my husband doesn't eat pork, so who knows? My salmon and my husband's trout were both tasty enough, but nothing extraordinary, and my vegetables were terminally overcooked. The pre-dinner Caesar salad also had too much cheese and dressing for my taste, but the mashed potato side was very good - the real thing. The service was mixed. When we arrived to check in, the desk clerks were discussing the work schedule and either didn't see us or ignored us until my husband got impatient after several minutes of polite waiting and interrupted them. They later made up for it by being extremely helpful when he had to make several business calls. (No phones in the lodge rooms.) The service in the restaurant was 100% average - neither exceptionally bad, nor exceptionally good. Overall, I'd give the lodge a 4 or 5 and the restaurant a 2 or 3. read more

This is one of the most beautiful restaurants I've seen. Tucked away in the mountains, on the bank of a flowing river, the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. The breakfast here is amazing, the best Eggs Benedict I've ever had. Very elegant but not hoity-toity. Check out the riverside dining room if you love a great view, features a view of the rolling water as you enjoy your meal. Or if you want to warm up, take a seat in the fireside cafe and lounge, with a good sized rock fireplace always blazing for your comfort. I hear the lodge is very nice and romantic. A great place to go in the winter, it gives that cheerful holiday, everything's so cozy feeling that we all love about winter time. And in the summer, have a light breakfast, or they will even pack you a picnic lunch to take hiking with you, enjoy the food and the great out-doors at the same time. read more

This review is just for the restaurant. We came here with some people who LOVE the place and were excited to share it with us. The setting is quite lovely, right on the side of a cheerful river, tucked away in some trees, inexplicably, right next to a gas station. It has the charm of a place out of time, like it hasn't changed much since the 60s. This is a good thing if you are here for the charming setting but maybe not so good if you just want a damn cocktail. I will preface this by saying, I am a total Seattle hipster cocktail nerd so I am preeeettttyyy sure this place is not catering to me and that is totally fine. Who, I ask you, though, puts dry vermouth in a Manhattan? Also, what bartender can't make a Negroni? Is Campari that much of a specialty liquor? Maybe..Le sigh. Let's get on to the positives! They bring you this small soup starter, with every meal I think. It was veggie this time and it was wonderful! Lots of flavor and the texture was great. The only problem: not enough! I will order a whole bowl of that next time! They also have these awesome rolls that are both dense and light and fluffy. An impossible sounding feat, I know, but so true! My dining companions all got steak which they liked a lot and I got the trout, which was a tad dry and pretty flavorless. I would have loved some of that soup to dump over the thing! The mashed potatoes were very good but the gravy was clearly from a mix and pretty unpalatable. Overall a decent experience and if I could give 2.5 stars, I would. I just can't manage three because of the fish and the gravy and the "cocktail." This was a very disappointing experience. Probably the worst $30 dinner have ever had. The service was mediocre. There were never over 5 people in the dining room while we were there but the waiter still forgot my mothers vegetable item and dinner roll. The vegetable I had (corn from a can) was cold and tasteless. The waiter spilled a fair portion of my French fries before he got them to the table and they were "McDonald's grade" at best The main course, trout was OK, but nothing special. Dinner for 2, no drinks or dessert came to over $60.00 plus tip. I won't be back there any time soon and would not recommend this place. read more

This Lodge & Restaurant is very convenient when passing through the Naches area. They have great breakfasts, and the lunch & dinner options are decent as well. I was very disappointed to find they recently stopped selling burgers on the gas station side. Cost-saving measures seem to be in place, because serving sizes have shrunk in direct correlation to the price hikes. On top of that, it is hit & miss on whether or not the servers will be friendly, or grouchy as all get-out; I'm batting around .500 with them this year. One of the best little mountain getaways from the city. Tucked away along a beautiful scenic drive along the Naches River. Whistlin' Jacks makes me feel all fuzzy inside when I think about it on a cold day. Their cabins available for rent are perfect for a romantic weekend away. Cozy couches in front of the fireplace. Hot tubs and jacuzzi's on your outside deck if you choose. And the food. TO. DIE. FOR. I've sampled everything from breakfast to dinner and it is all melt in your mouth amazing. The one thing I'm still dreaming about is their bread. Their rolls AND sourdough bread. Honest to god, I've never had rolls as good as the ones they have at Whistlin' Jacks. Nothing even close to their rolls! I asked the waitress if they made them there and she said, "Yes. Would you like to get some to go?" "DO I?! I'll take 2 orders please." This part of the state/country/world is my absolute favorite, so WJ's made perfect sense for our stay over my big day. It gave us immediate access to stunning trails, views, and genuine peace. If you're looking for a clean, laid-back place to rest your bones after a good hike, WJ's is ideal. (If you're looking for luxury, please look elsewhere... there are no TVs and no cell coverage... this is a retreat setting.) The main reason that I want to give such a favorable review is two-fold: (1) We met one of the owners, Dan, and he and his wife were so kind to us and to everyone who rolled in. I mean this literally: one day during our stay, there was a rare, relatively brief power outage; Dan and his wife situated themselves outside the lodge as people came to get gas, etc. For pretty much the entire outage, they announced to visitors "we're very sorry, power's out," and then direct drivers to the nearest gas station, convenience store, etc. Dan struck me as a person who cares deeply about his business and his customers. (2) We left A LOT of stuff in a drawer in our room (too much cake the night before??) and within two days, JW's staff mailed our items to us: priority mail and insured. When I called and asked how I could compensate them, the lovely woman on the other end of the phone said that there was no need to do so. I REALLY appreciate both the level of care and the laid-backness of the staff -- it's a rare combo that really makes for a pleasurable get-away! read more

My family stopped by the restaurant on our way out of town. We had the worst restaurant experience ever. We had 5 people in our party. They had a tough time figuring out how to seat us. Should have been a RED flag. We were seated, we had a very nice waitress, ordered our food and all seemed to be good. All we wanted to do is order a burger and go. They introduced very elaborate specials. Their prices were okay for burger though. After ordering we waited and waited and waited. Finally asking when we might be getting our food, they told us we were coming up. The woman who came in after us was served, she had eaten and left and we still didn't get our food. Finally after an hour, and the restaurant was NOT full, we got our food. I did substitute the fries for salad and I still got the fries and the salad, hmmm. I bit into the burger and my chicken was raw. I was so mad. The chicken was a small piece in a huge bun. They took my dish and asked me what I would like to do. I told the waitress that we don't have time to wait another hour for another burger to just forget it. They didn't charge us for the meal, we just paid for the beer we ordered. It was a horrible experience. I was so upset. I didn't even bother eating lunch. So I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone EVER! read more

The food and atmosphere are great, but the service needs a lot of help. There is a male bartender that does a fantastic job, but the female we had two nights ago was less than good. She made us feel very unwelcome by asking us if we want our check or if we were ready to leave multiple times (at least four times) before we even got our food! She didn't know how to make any normal drink that would be ordered from a bar, but didn't offer to find out either.. A woman behind us asked for a cup of coffee, she said she was out but if could make a pot "if she had to." Would have been 5 stars a week ago! The place has always been a favorite of mine and numerous family members for years. I was not happy last week when I have guests from Florida whom I always take to Whistlin' Jacks for lunch or dinner with a great view. Earlier this week, we visited and were told be had to eat in the lounge due to budget cuts. I'm sorry, but that is not acceptable with me. I can eat in a bar/lounge without driving 50 mi each way for a beautiful setting. This was a huge mistake and I hope is corrected soon. The food is good to excellent, but the view is what the original owners pushed successfully for more than 50 years. This place is worth the 3 hour drive from Seattle, do plan on staying the night. They have a super staff that couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Once last winter we rode over and decided we were to tired to ride home. The hotel was full but our waitress introduced us to a man that had a big house and heart. He put us up for the night. Service terrible, didn't stay long enough to eat the food since it took them 25 min just to bring out drinks and lost our order to boot, so after 30 min of no service and no food we left and paid for drinks. Seriously with the process they want to charge for a meal get some decent waiters and cooks this place needs new management. Do your self a favor skip this place. read more
