We were able to mix and match. Good portions. Hotel itself is decorated interestingly with unusual artifacts . Parking outside restaurant is limited if you're lucky to find a spot or park in public parking nearby.

We stayed here and dined here on a Saturday night…read more I was actually very impressed with this hotel restaurant. We've been to a few country hotels around England and find the restaurants to be of very varying standards. The building is beautiful (claims to be the oldest hotel in England) but it is right next to Malmesbury Abbey - so picturesque. The actual dining room isn't anything special - a mix of modern and old but actually quite sparse in terms of decor etc. Not something I minded. It was pretty busy on a Saturday night but we got a nice seat by the window. Service was a bit grumpy at first but efficient. We had an avocado salad to start which was fresh with very generous portions of avocado. My only criticism would be not quite enough dressing. For main I had a delicious piece of sea bass but the best bit was the lemon and chilli linguine that accompanied it. So tangy and I'm pretty sure it was fresh home cooked pasta. Really delicious and something I will try to recreate at home. Service was a bit grumpy at first but efficient. It gets 4 stars vs 5 because of the service and also it is on the pricier side (15-20 per main) As an additional aside, we had breakfast here the next morning and my eggs royale was perfection. Rich and plentiful hollandaise sauce and tasty salmon. Good croissants and pastries too.

The fish and chips was a very generous portion and I loved the dill in the batter of the fish. Something a bit different and right up my street! The lunch time ciabattas all looked really good. The table next to us had a couple of pizza too, which were huge and looked really good. Great find. We'll be back!

Across-street parking is available, although limited to one hour. We found this to be beneficial in checking in and dropping off our bags before relocating the car to the long-stay car park less than a three minute walk from the hotel. We received a professional and informative welcome from a member of staff, who offered to take our bags before showing us to our room. Be aware that the hotel reception is on the right of a central outdoor passageway and the hotel bar is on the left, and it would appear as though staff share responsibilities between the two. If there is no-one at reception at your time of arrival you may want to pop over to the bar to make yourself known? Tucked away in the loft our spacious and decorous room featured an ample king size bed with ornate bed stead and corresponding furnishings, a correctly-tuned digital television, telephone with easy access to reception, a decent hair dryer, a generous provision of tea and coffee making facilities, and a view over the multitude of the sixteenth and seventeenth century rooftops of Tetbury town centre. Like the bedroom our bathroom was clean, tidy and spacious. The shower was of a high standard and we appreciated the inclusion of a bathtub. Mini bottles of shower gel and shampoo were provided, along with ample towels. Our overall sleep quality was good, although we found the duck feather pillows were not as firm as we prefer and although not impossible, it was difficult to find immediate comfort. We were concerned that our evening may be interrupted by noise from the hotel bar courtyard, but we actually enjoyed a very peaceful stay. Breakfast was available up until 10am and could be found in the hotel restaurant, situated behind the bar area. In addition to cereals, toast, fruit, yoghurt, and hot drinks, the extensive menu presented options to cater for almost all tastes and palates. The French toast with bacon and maple syrup, and the eggs benedict were particularly enjoyable. We couldn't help but feel for the solitary member of staff who appeared to be responsible for running the entire breakfast sitting, providing bar service, and dealing with hotel guests. Despite an obvious strain on this member of staff's behalf, we were quickly served and dealt with in an entirely professional manner.

The terrine was rich without being too far to the salty side. The pan-fried scallops with black pudding and cauliflower puree were delectable in providing just the right amount of crispness while still remaining spongy and fresh. The combination of black pudding and cauliflower puree was rather piquant and provided an interesting compliment to the dish. The lamb shank was prepared with a meticulous attention to its overall delicacy, with thick rustic gravy. The mushroom wellington was full-bodied in its nutty flavour and was rather impressive in size. Regardless, the light pastry lacked a stodgy substructure and the accompanying roast vegetables were anything beside bland. To finish we enjoyed a slice of the chocolate pie and a bowl of lemon sorbet. The pie was well-presented and of a decent quality. The sorbet was splendidly tart. Despite a booking during a peak time the restaurant was enjoyable quiet and we were generally left in peace (although service felt as though it were constantly to hand). Both qualities contributed to the intimate atmosphere. The elaborate furnishings to suit the ornate style of the building were appreciated. Needless to say we were not disappointed at all with the entire experience.

The young man with whom we booked had not written the reservation down and had literally no recollection of our booking a whole 90 minutes later.... A table found, and a whole 20 mins before a waitress arrives. Provided the menus, took the order and only after we'd ordered did we notice the specials on a wall board that she'd failed to mention. Shame as the Specials looked good and would have influenced my selection. That's waitressing 101 surely ?? Food is billed a gastropub, but fails to deliver. The Lemon Sole in lemon grass broth with Pak Choi .....utterly tasteless. The "Chef's selection of British Cheeses" - seriously there are 700 British cheeses out there (I looked it up !!) and what does this Chef put on a plate....yes you've guessed it - Cheddar, Stilton and Brie !!!! Brie last time I looked was French - but I guess you do get Somerset Brie - but that's not the point - it's billed as a Chef's selection of British Cheeses and is a lazy predictable 1970s cheese board.....
