The fish and chips was a very generous portion and I loved the dill in the batter of the fish. Something a bit different and right up my street! The lunch time ciabattas all looked really good. The table next to us had a couple of pizza too, which were huge and looked really good. Great find. We'll be back!

Across-street parking is available, although limited to one hour. We found this to be beneficial in checking in and dropping off our bags before relocating the car to the long-stay car park less than a three minute walk from the hotel. We received a professional and informative welcome from a member of staff, who offered to take our bags before showing us to our room. Be aware that the hotel reception is on the right of a central outdoor passageway and the hotel bar is on the left, and it would appear as though staff share responsibilities between the two. If there is no-one at reception at your time of arrival you may want to pop over to the bar to make yourself known? Tucked away in the loft our spacious and decorous room featured an ample king size bed with ornate bed stead and corresponding furnishings, a correctly-tuned digital television, telephone with easy access to reception, a decent hair dryer, a generous provision of tea and coffee making facilities, and a view over the multitude of the sixteenth and seventeenth century rooftops of Tetbury town centre. Like the bedroom our bathroom was clean, tidy and spacious. The shower was of a high standard and we appreciated the inclusion of a bathtub. Mini bottles of shower gel and shampoo were provided, along with ample towels. Our overall sleep quality was good, although we found the duck feather pillows were not as firm as we prefer and although not impossible, it was difficult to find immediate comfort. We were concerned that our evening may be interrupted by noise from the hotel bar courtyard, but we actually enjoyed a very peaceful stay. Breakfast was available up until 10am and could be found in the hotel restaurant, situated behind the bar area. In addition to cereals, toast, fruit, yoghurt, and hot drinks, the extensive menu presented options to cater for almost all tastes and palates. The French toast with bacon and maple syrup, and the eggs benedict were particularly enjoyable. We couldn't help but feel for the solitary member of staff who appeared to be responsible for running the entire breakfast sitting, providing bar service, and dealing with hotel guests. Despite an obvious strain on this member of staff's behalf, we were quickly served and dealt with in an entirely professional manner.

The young man with whom we booked had not written the reservation down and had literally no recollection of our booking a whole 90 minutes later.... A table found, and a whole 20 mins before a waitress arrives. Provided the menus, took the order and only after we'd ordered did we notice the specials on a wall board that she'd failed to mention. Shame as the Specials looked good and would have influenced my selection. That's waitressing 101 surely ?? Food is billed a gastropub, but fails to deliver. The Lemon Sole in lemon grass broth with Pak Choi .....utterly tasteless. The "Chef's selection of British Cheeses" - seriously there are 700 British cheeses out there (I looked it up !!) and what does this Chef put on a plate....yes you've guessed it - Cheddar, Stilton and Brie !!!! Brie last time I looked was French - but I guess you do get Somerset Brie - but that's not the point - it's billed as a Chef's selection of British Cheeses and is a lazy predictable 1970s cheese board.....

Off to an awful start…read more We contacted the hotel before arrival to especially request soya milk for breakfast which they said they would provide, we arrived and no soya milk and more importantly not really any expressed concern that they hadn't provided any despite saying they would. Not off to a great start but still not the end of the world. So we then ask if there's any chance we can check out an hour later the next morning as we were going to a wedding and would arrive too early, the boy on reception said he'd ring and check, he then came back to us with "no it's company policy and the rooms are fully booked", very much a classic computer says no approach. We finally get to the average looking room and go to have a shower, the shower doesn't work. This wasn't low water pressure, personal preference or complicated knobs not working, this was no water is coming out not working. We ring reception and the same boy as before says he'll come look, he comes up to the room spends a couple of minutes in the bathroom turning the tap on and off, sighing and saying "for fuck sake" before announcing "it's not working but it's too late to do anything about it now". Again we state the obvious "okay but we need to wash so what are you going to do about it?" We ask to try a shower in another room, he says he will have to ring someone and goes off to call a manager who it seems clearly couldn't give a shit. He tells us we can try the room next door (despite earlier being told they were fully booked) but the shower in there is exactly the same and no water is coming out! Here we have to state the obvious that "Why are you renting rooms out when the showers do not work?" Or "How do you not know that the showers do not work?" We are told that no one else has complained (right....) So we ask to try another (note again that we were told they were fully booked!) and in this room the water is finally running but only ice cold. Once again we ring reception and ask why do none of the showers work and this time the boy gives the phone to a manager who says, wait for it, "It's too late to do anything". We ask them quite simply "would you pay for a room when you could not wash?" And at this point we are responded to with "uhhhhh" sounds until we hang up. We explained all this to the day staff the next morning who had had no message passed to them by the night staff about the shower not working at all. The manager apologised and said that the night manager had been off sick the night before. We explained we expected some compensation and fortunately were given a partial refund. Ended better than it started but I think some of the staff could really do with a lesson in customer service and the shower issues need to be addressed.

Our room #11 was large and well appointed. We loved the blend of old world charm and modern understated luxury. The grounds are spectacular. The dining is world class! Besides for the most innovative tasting menu in the world conceived by a genius chef and his staff, we loved the tapas bar and private dining experience. Our sommelier Tim who was visiting from Denmark made the dinner so special as did the young chef Julian who explained the details of iberico ham and each ingredient. As you approach the hotel down the huge drive, you are met with lots of greenery, trees and spacious countryside. The large gates open on approach, revealing the large courtyard and the hotel itself. Two valets met us as we drove to the entrance, they valeted the car and took our luggage into the hotel. The receptionist was French (as are all the workers as far as we could tell as the owners are French) and greeted us very warmly, and then telephoned the manager of the hotel who came down to greet us personally. The personal touch really was amazing, he knew where we were from, our names and was very genuine and friendly. The porter then took us up to the room where our luggage was already waiting for us. The room was not as large as many other places we have stayed in, but was incredibly sufficient and again, decadent. There was a large bed, large tv with sky channels, and an exceptional bathroom which reflected the spa that is in the hotel as the shower was a high tech spa shower! The view was incredible, over looking the outside eating area and the gardens. We went to the bar area which serves any kind of cocktail you could think of and I had a Strawberry Bellini made by a very competent barman who seemed to be capable of making any kind of drink in the world! Then came the canapes and menus, absolutely chocked full of the best food possible. As usual, we had the beef for mains, and the maitre'd allowed us to 'mix and match' certain things on the set menu with the a la carte menu. The actual dining room was not anything special, fairly spacious but not very intimate. I had the goats cheese starter which was exceptional, followed by beef with veal kidney (which I could not even bear to look at let alone eat!) which again, was absolute top quality. I had black truffle ice cream to finish, and the service had been perfect the whole way through. Breakfast in bed, full English as always, yet again was phenomenal for very little charge. I would highly recommend Whatley Manor for anyone with money as it is incredibly expensive as you would expect for a 5 hotel. There is an inhouse cinema with home made popcorn as well as a large spa.
