We came here during a trip to Corpus Christi and tried this place out, because Mexican buffet sounded interesting. I can tell you, it's okay to miss the Mexican buffet. The waitress didn't come out often and she did mess up orders on our table, so that was slightly frustrating. I definitely did not get refills on my drink. She was not rude, which is a plus, just not available and the place was pretty dead, which made it annoying. The place is old and in need of an upgrade of some sort, since old hole in the wall charm only works if the food is amazing. I think if you're starving and this is the last place on earth, fine you will survive. I just think that Refugio has to have better restaurants.

We stopped midday on a recent road trip to this small town burger spot with 50s diner charm and friendly people. Just off the freeway a bit, this is a great place for a tasty meal, ice cream dessert or snack pleaser We enjoyed some fried pickles while we waited for our tortilla burgers ( we added avocado). The pickle chips and ranch dressing was good but a little too salty for my liking. The tortilla burger was a veggie loaded cheesy smashed beef burger in two fried tortillas. Greasy but good. Fall all apart but finger-lickability. With a side of hot fries, this filled us up quickly. But not too full to not partake in an ice cream shake for the road. Needless to say, we couldn't move for a good two hours but we felt great having a bucket list item checked and a satiated palate.

This time though they were having water problems. The McDonalds, as well as the convenience store next door had no drinks available - something dealing with the "boiled water" according to the sign on the McD drink dispenser. The service was on the slow side considering others in the restaurant had gotten their meals. But the order was right, so I give that to them.

When it came to us actually taking our order he didn't even ask if we wanted a meal or just the entrees. The actual place was okay, it wasn't the best, and it surely wasn't packed so I wouldn't get why this employee was stressed and rolling eyes at us. Maybe just a bad day.

The carne guisada didn't really make me want seconds either. We had an attendant who was pregnant (didn't catch her name) and she was great. Never let our drinks bottom out and didn't let empty plates (there were only a couple) stay on the table long. There were some rude people in our area and she dealt with them pleasantly. There's no secret why Butter Churn has been around so long. It's really good home-style comfort food at a very reasonable price. Just ask to not be set next to the buffet section. People can really pile up plates there and it's sad to witness.

It's not intended for a light meal. Here you get to choose from about a half dozen meat or fish dishes, more than that of vegetables, a well-stocked salad bar, and a variety of desserts. The first thing I noticed the beef patties are less expensive than Whataburger but the cheese is more so overall it's about the same here as Whataburger. Lots of flies inside on the tables and most of the tables had napkins, discarded receipts, and other junk on them and were not clean. Staff was friendly and accommodating and seemed genuinely happy to be at work. My patties were ok but had an off taste I couldn't quite identify? Maybe like vegetable oil? I'm not sure. Overall I can't compare this to other McDonalds as I do not normally eat at them. I may try again just to compare others with this one for flavor.
