This a new place that opened up maybe a few months ago. We came here one time after the hype was over and we waited in line at the drive thru for maybe about an hour. They had someone taking orders for the lines outside and then someone check checking up on us to see if we got our drink food and payment yet. The food was good. But once we got our meal. We literally was able to eat our whole meal in line while we waited to get out of the drive thru line bc people in front of us hadn't gotten there orders yet. The staff were very nice and patient. It just took very long to get our food and get out of the drive thru line. I went here a month later thinking ok they have been around a little longer now. I ordered my food online and the app said my meal should be ready in 4-7min. I paid with a card and I went thru the drive through line which took me an hour of sitting in line I gave them my name. And they told Me to pull into a numbered parking space which I waited another 20min. After being in line for now 1 hour and 20min. I went inside and gave my name again. The staff just told me my name was on the screen and they were working on it. I had literally waited over an hour for one burger I ordered through the mobile app and tried to pick up myself. I got in line at 745pm and I received my food at 9:15pm. The staff came out and stated she noticed my car had been sitting out there for a while and came to check to see what my order was. First location in Charlotte, and I've never had it before, so had to try it. Not to mention it's 2 miles down the street from our house. Visited on a Sunday around 11:30am and all went very smooth. Short line, fast service, and food came out correct and HOT! We tried their jalapeño cheddar burger, definitely would get that again. Fries were good, but onion rings were delish as well. Good fast food burger joint addition to the area. Give the staff some grace as they manage through their first opening, training, and dealing with the Charlotte customer base. read more

Here's my take on the new Charlotte Whataburger (plus a little brand context for folks new to it.) Whataburger started in 1950 in Corpus Christi, Texas, founded by Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton, and became famous for its orange-and-white A-frame stores and oversized buns. The family sold a majority stake to BDT Capital Partners in 2019, which helped fuel expansion east. North Carolina got its first location in Gastonia in May 2025 and Charlotte's Albemarle Road spot opened in September. Now the food: I finally went to see what the hype was about. For me, hype often equals nostalgia... people get excited because a place from "back home" arrives in their new city. I didn't grow up on Whataburger (long live In-N-Out), so I came in clean and ordered the Sweet & Spicy Bacon Burger which had two patties, bacon, American and Monterey Jack, grilled onions, and that sweet-heat pepper sauce. I added tomatoes because every burger should have them, IMO. It's a massive fast-food burger and makes you wonder why anyone would choose a basic drive-thru when this exists. For fast food, it's leagues above most though not the best I've ever had, and it still can't touch a great local smashburger (think SureFire at Camp North End or Bae's in Mooresville). Update: I am here the weekend after the prior experience below. The corporate staff are here. Service is on point. They are in a booth, analyzing customer counts and times. The food came out perfect. Taquito, double whataburger, fries, 100%. This was a 2 star from prior experience, but I am giving it a 3 star now. This service and freshness is was what I would expect from Whataburger, this time. I appreciate the ongoing training here. I sooo want this place to succeed (recovering Texan here). The Whataburger promise of delicious and friendly was met. Fresh and juicy burgers, pleasant staff, knowledgeable, and great. Last 3 visits however: Hate to say it... but y'all picked the wrong city to open up into. I hope that you will be able to get good, consistent, and quality people and staff, to meet the Whataburger standard. Here I am, at 9am, trying to get a taquito, the employees are louder than the music, inappropriate language, and other customers just looking on and trying to get out quickly. I've never had a hamburger that wasn't good....until eating here. The experience was all around bad. Possibly it's just "being new" but because this is such a popular chain, I would have thought they would have the newbie things worked out. First, we arrived at 11:03pm Saturday night and both drive-thru lanes were backed up. We thought it would move so we stayed - 48 minutes later we were giving our order to the ONE lady running back and forth taking orders and payments between each line. 15 minutes after that we encountered a second lady who was responsible for carrying food and drinks between the two lines - while yelling from the window across the lanes "WHAT DRINKS DID YOU HAVE??". I just felt it was EXTREMELY unorganized drive thru lane experience and dangerous for the two ladies. I ordered a Whataburger, add cheese, no onion and my BF ordered a bacon cheeseburger no tomato with fries and a vanilla milkshake. A side of whataburger sauce and a side of spicy ketchup. My opinion: for a total of almost $23 a the patty was very thin, dry, and salty. I had diced onions on mine when i ordered it without. The bun was too big for such a thin patty. The fries were not good - shoestring but must have been cooked earlier and not fresh. The vanilla milkshake was good but only filled up 3/4 of the cup. I was not impressed at all with this burger. His opinion - he said he enjoyed his bacon cheeseburger. We paid for a side of spicy ketchup but none in the bag. The side order of whataburger sauce we ordered was in the bag but life wasn't on good so the sauce leaked all over the burgers. Soooo - i will go back in 6 months and try again - this time, i'll try the junior size and will go inside to eat at a table. I hope it's a better experience because i'm glad East Charlotte has this popular restaurant but they really need to make BIG CHANGES and IMPROVE quality checks on food before it's sent out and improve the safety for their employees in the drive thru line. read more

Why can I not like this place? This overly hyped and much delayed opening has been a disappointment. My first visit was soon after they opened. I was expecting the best hamburger ever, but it was just the opposite. I ordered onion rings, but they sent out fries; however, they corrected the error. I decided to try it again, today, and it just seemed worse. My order was the original Whataburger with onion rings. The cashier asked if I wanted a sauce for the rings. I chose ranch dipping sauce. There was a 55 cents charge for the sauce which I wasn't expecting. The order arrived but with an old tasting blue cheese sauce (mostly mayonnaise - NOT ranch. There were 5 very small, overcooked onion rings in the paper pouch. The cheeseburger (lacking the cheese that I paid extra for) was the most bland, tasteless burger I have ever eaten. There will NOT be a third visit here. How can this chain be so popular in Texas? There must be something different there. read more

This is 100% a manager problem at this store. We were the second car at the order screen and sat for 25 minutes before we could even place our order. After finally ordering, we were told to drive around, only to have three different people come to our car asking if we were David, Patricia, John, or whoever--it was chaotic and disorganized. We finally got our drink, and then were asked to give our card to a teenager, who took it to the window. They asked if I wanted a receipt, and I never received one. The manager then came to the window and started scolding the employees for not helping customers. We ended up sitting in the drive-thru for 40 minutes, watching at least six people standing around in the kitchen and four more just delivering a drink or two outside. This store clearly needs corporate intervention ASAP. This is unacceptable, and we will never return until significant changes are made. read more

The wait time is ALWAYS long. I have been stuck in the drive thru for 45 minutes when there were less than 5 cars, and have had to wait over 15 minutes when there was only 1 car in front of me. After receiving my food, the order was wrong most of the time. One time I had a breakfast order that was placed during the breakfast hours, but when I received the food it was wrong. When I brought this to the staff's attention, I was told the order could not be fixed since it was now after 11am (since I had been waiting so long in the drive thru). I have been repeatedly overcharged for an order (the cashier entering something other than what I ordered). How in the world is this place even open? They'll serve people three cars behind you first, they'll get the order wrong every time, and if you do manage to get your food, it'll be cold. Dry, weak burgers. French Fries were old, dry and tasteless. Onion rings were very greasy - must have doubled the French fry oil and used it on the onion rings. One server was kind and helpful. We ordered medium drinks on the order screen but cups were not marked and we apparently picked up small cups and there were no lids for those cups. It wasn't until we were leaving that the lady behind the counter told me we had been using small cups instead of medium cups. Apparently the medium cups just look like large cups since NOTHING was marked. Poor service will NOT be going back. read more

Went through the drive thru around 7pm and when I got the the window and paid, they handed me one straw and three drinks. They then told me to pull to a numbered spot to wait for my food while there was another car in that spot already. A girl came to our window with a bag of food and asked if it was ours and we said no. She came back about 10 minutes later and asked us if this bag was our order then proceeded to drop the back in my lap. I asked my on to check the order before we pulled away to make sure it was correct. We were missing our cookie. I went back inside and waited at the counter for about 10 minutes while 3 different employees walked by me, looked at me and ignored me. Someone finally mumbled something to me and I said that I was missing a cookie. They went to the back, yelled "are we out of cookies." She came back several minutes later said that they were out, put some fruit snacks and cinnamon cookies in a bag and handed that to me. The food was okay, the service was terrible. This was my first time at a Whataburger. I purchased the patty melt, a single with cheese, a brownie, and a vanilla shake. It was $28. There were only about 6-7 of us in line and the wait was long. My son wouldn't even finish his burger because he said it wasn't any better than one we could make at home. The vanilla shake did not have a good flavor and it looked like parts of the shake were separating. I don't know how to explain it. The fries were decent and tasted like Wendy's fries. The brownie came prepackaged. The food is BASIC. Unfortunately, we won't be eating Whataburger again, ever. McDonald's for us I guess! read more
