The equipment is outdated so much so that I have a second membership to Planet Fitness. The only reason I am here is for the pool. During the day in the pool is usually packed with everyone over the age of 70. Nighttime is a little better. I'm an avid lap swimmer and swim for an hour every night. However, I do not like that every weeknight from 4p-6p the pool is closed for their swim classes with young children. I try not to think about the urine that is 100 percent in the pool after this. My pet peeve is the boomers who will hang out in the swimming lane floating around socializing. Last night I ended up having to use to side of the pool not for lap swimming. Then a family walked in with children, and I left 8 mins into my 60 min workout. I hope the "floaters" got the workout they wanted because I did not. For me I need a pool that is solely dedicated for lap swimming. I get it that this club caters to families and boomers. For the most part the parents keep the children on the recreation side of the pool. However, there is a family that comes almost nightly, and the children had to be told by club members to stay out of the lane's multiple times. Sometimes if the other members must yell at the children a few times the father will then intervene. When I see these children show up at night, I am instantly annoyed. This is not the place for me. I need a gym dedicated to purely lap swimming and to improve my athletic performance in the pool. I will be switching as soon as I can.

F45 is a franchised gym that offers a fast-paced fun group workout roughly alternating days…read morefocusing on upper body, cardio, lower body, and full body/abs/cardio. The workouts focus on "functional" fitness and are 45 minutes long (except for one hour-long session a week), hence the F45 name. The workout for the day is the same program whether you're exercising in Australia where the program began or here in little Rhody. (Very cool today to take a 9am session here while my daughter took the same one in LA.) Pre-registration is required as there is a limit of 28 participants in any class - at least in this club. The goal to to move fast, sweat, and develop some camaraderie with your fellow participants and partner for the day - high fives are pretty much mandated. Two staff members work at every session. They explain and QUICKLY demo each move and describe the circuit. You and your "partner" - assuming an even numbers of people in the class, you are paired with someone who moves through your circuit with you - start at an assigned station and receive direction and timing from a video screen demo'ing your move as you do it. The staff regularly visit everyone in the room giving support and encouragement and some comments to assist with your form, weight selection, and (in my case) an explanation of the occasionally confusing progression through the circuit. The sales material says the program works for all fitness levels but if you are not used to regular strength training, this probably isn't for you: it's fast and many of the exercises are complex (upper and lower body combined even on leg- or arm-only day, with cardio because of the limited rest periods so it's always a HIIT program), the weights start at 10 pounds, and many of the safety tips aren't consistently given (knees above ankles for a lunge, roll your shoulders back and don't collapse into it...), and it is WICKED FUN!!! The staff are friendly, the club is clean, the equipment is great (y-bells, Thor's hammers, multi-handled sand bags, in addition to the expected kettlebells, dumb bells,etc). Pricing is higher than a "gym," more like a Pilates or yoga studio. Again, I loved it - but this won't be the place for everyone.

I have been a member of Fitness Together in East Greenwich since the fall of 2008, about a year and…read morea half ago. I went there at a time that my health was deteriorating and my conditioning at an all-time low. One of my sons had said to me, "Mom, don't you even want to get well?" I joined FT and I was dragging. I complained constantly about everything. Yet each trainer I worked with just kept urging me on and my conditioning improved. About a year later, it was determined that my problems were being caused by a benign cyst on my frontal lobe. I had surgery (8.5 hours' worth) on November 24, 2009. I was in the neurosurgical ICU for ten days. During that stay, whenever the Physical Therapist came to work with me, I couldn't wait to get up and walk. If she said to do one stair repetition, I said, "Can I do two?" or three or four. Guess where this determination and drive came from? Fitness Together. My stay in the ICU was four days shorter than the average one. My neurosurgeon, Dr. Petra Klinge, said I could return to exercise 6-8 weeks after surgery. You know I was back at FT six weeks to the day. Early this June, I summited N.H.'s Mt. Avalon, an elevation gain of 1450' in the pouring rain, only 25 minutes slower than AMC's suggested time. Not bad for just over 6 months after brain surgery. This is the kind of conditioning and motivation I received from FT. The staff are friendly and professional. The owner, Robin Ball, is even spending extra time consulting with my chiropractor and physical therapist to supplement my particular needs. You know what else? They even let me bring in my own CD's. Ive done vigorous vinyasa yoga and enjoy the refreshing pace as a change. Also offers Zumba, and a more vigorous flow class, which I haven't tried yet. Biggest complaint is the minimal soundproofing in the foyer - either incoming students are especially noisy, or the walls are thin (probably the latter)! Occasionally during the final relaxation you're disturbed by happy chatter of folks waiting for their class.
