The place was hardly busy and the worker took SO long to take care of us, I was glad I put extra time in the meter for my car. Ordered a few bagels and a bacon egg and cheese and a buttered bagel. When my brother ordered, she grabbed a bagel and checked the bottom of it and picked up another and checked the bottom, it looked like she purposefully gave us the overcooked one. Have stopped here with a travel group of 8 a few times over the past 14 mos. The staff is always friendly, helpful & efficient. Great selection of bagels, generous on the cream cheese, and just a good spot. Easy to get in and out. They also don't ask for tips at checkout (guessing because it's the owners themselves), but a nice little bonus. read more

What A Bagel What A Bagel is literally a hole in the wall. It's a small place, often crowded, with everyone literally right on top of each other, and zero organization with the line. The bagels and breakfast sandwiches are good (not amazing) but the variety of cream cheeses was my favorite. The vegetable cream cheese was fresh and tasty. There is a very small seating area which would have been great, but when we went it was 35 degrees outside and the owners left the doors open, so eating inside would have basically been like eating outside so we took our food to go. read more

This bagel joint has always been great. Fresh homemade bagels, the earlier you go, the better variety is available (they do run out). They are prepared anyway you like. Smoked Salmon and cream cheese is top notch. The spread isn't however. Service is good, they have a good system. Fairly priced. Not the place to go for ambiance. Nasty, nasty service. I ordered six bagels. Owner put my order on shelf behind him, walked into back, and did not return, and left me standing there for ten minutes. I called "Hello?" a few times; nothing. After the other counterperson finally finished the sale, I commented, not raising my voice at all, about what had happened. She totally ignored me. Then the owner came roaring out from the back (he never heard "Hello?", bit this he heard just fine) and ordered me to LEAVE THE STORE. I said, " Really? That's your response? Okay- so I loved the tuna fish sandwiches that chock full of nuts used to make when i was a kid. This place has the chock full of nuts tuna fish recipe down. I had a voucher and used it to get my coworkers some breakfast one morning. I expected nicer looking digs and it looked more like a convenience store but I had no choice so I used my voucher. The staff was somewhat helpful with a tinge of annoyance. I came here based on people's recommendations, but I couldn't have been more disappointed. The bagel was decent and toasted perfectly. However when handed to me it was barely edible. This restaurant uses styrofoam! It's literally illegal to use foam containers in NYC, but What a Bagel saves a third of a penny per plate by serving their bagels in styrofoam. Everyone knows foam is bad for the environment and that it will never, ever go away after being used.
