4 stars for being able to sit on a dockside patio, 3 for food... but not terrible. If it was not outdoors I would not return but the setting was really nice on a cooler mid September eve. Good menu, lots of beer on tap including the local Sand City Ooops Feels like you are in Montauk '90's
Wales tail was a restaurant we frequented often on summer days a number of years ago since we live in the area but for whatever reason had stopped going. Today was a beautiful sunny summer day so I thought it might be nice to stop back in for lunch and enjoy the view the restaurant offers. We sat outside overlooking the pool and harbor at a high top. Our waitress Emma was sweet and attentive taking our order right away. We started with nachos and draft beer. The beer was cold and refreshing on this 85 degree day. We ordered the Cesar Mexican salad and three overstuffed tacos, the hot honey, the spare rib and the crispy fish. Everything but the salad was surprisingly delicious, I say this because nothing we ate seemed to be made in house. Everything seemed to come to the restaurant in a jar, box, bag or frozen and simply assembled in the kitchen. Don't get me wrong it all tasted fine, (excluding the salad because they just could not hide the "restaurant depot" add-ins"), but in my opinion was over priced for what it was. Nachos. Salad, three tacos and two draft beers came to $100 with the tip.
Just note that Happy hour specials are only at the bar. The beers are fresh and rotating with some from the Harbor Head Brewery on the other side of the parking lot. One of my favorite dishes here is the Barbecue Chicken Quesadilla, always very good. I tried the Maui Chicken Tacos for the first time, also good. Any evening here for Happy Hour is good value drinks and appetizer specials. Having spent Happy Hour at the bar, I have to say that I received excellent service from the very busy bartender. Taco Tuesday and Thursday for half priced Taps and Apps, are also very good with the difference being that on Tuesday and Thursday, the special prices are available at all tables.
Our server was so sweet and met us with smiles. If you want delicious food a gorgeous view and a perfect marg. This is the place. The serving sizes are def shareables so come hungry. Everything we had and I mean EVERYTHING was so flavorful and perfectly cooked. 10/10

It's located on the water and has amazing views of the local local marina For drinks, we ordered the tequila frose, which was PHENOMENAL!! We really loved the frose, it tasted like the perfect summer drink We also ordered the watermelon Mojito, which was delicious as well! For lunch, we ordered the surf and turf taco, the bang bang, shrimp taco and the street bowl. The tacos were amazing and you could taste how fresh seafood was! The street bowl had a great variety of flavors, we even added grilled shrimp and it was overall delicious! The staff was very kind and this is definitely a great spot to hang out at with friends. They have taco Tuesday specials and even half off appetizers on Thursdays! We love the vibes here and would definitely come back for drinks for a girls night out They also have a new podcast which features tips and tricks of the restaurant business! They have new episodes EVERY week and they give inside info of the whales tail! Definitely check them out if you're looking for a great laugh! The service here was quick and efficient. The food was phenomenal with excellent portions and great taste. The only complaint was the air conditioning as there was none present and it was a hot summer day. I loved the Maui tacos they were very good and I the chicken was cooked to perfection. I also enjoyed the nachos very much because of all the guacamole they gave us and salsa. The surf and turf tacos were good and described as delicious and savory. I recommend not getting the guacamole only because it is more expensive than the nachos which have the guacamole already in it and more. Another tip is to post an instagram photo of your food for 10% off your order I took a photo of my friend in a lovely fashion. Overall great experience 4/5!
A lot has changed since the last time I came here about 7 years ago. It's not as open as it used to be and the bar area seems too large for the space, like it feels cramped. The tacos were just meh. My husband got a chicken taco and he said it lacked in flavor. I liked my fish taco a lot other than the fact that the fish also didn't have a lot of flavor.
Greed has struck, not inflation! Have been coming here for years, and basically consider it a dive bar with good views. Since Christina left, no one can make a good drink. Went for the first time of the summer today and ordered drinks on the rocks. A 2oz pour in a small plastic cup....imagine my shock when the charge was $18 each and A $10 UPCHARGE FOR "on the rocks"!!! We had 4 small (2oz drinks), 2 crappy bang bang shrimp tacos (2 overly fried shrimp per, overstuffed with lettuce and tomato) and shared a queso blanco app (which was yellow cheese? Blanco used to be white) with some greasy chips...total was $129 before tip! We are locals and will never go back here....most expensive drinks in Northport in plastic cups with a movie theater sticky floor. A shame since we have supported this local business since they opened...which makes them feel they can qouge their customers.
You have to know you're going into Whale's Tale and getting casual bar food, served on paper and plastic cups. It's part of the charm. The food was honestly super yummy. We shared the street corn fries and wings as appetizers, and we each got 2 tacos. No drinks- the bill was $60 before tip. Wing flavor was good and they were decently sized. Fries were okay, and were just seasoned fries with some Cotija cheese sprinkled on top. The tacos were honestly delish. I had 2 pork tacos and my husband had the surf and turf and hot honey chicken. We loved all 4. Was the food good? Yes. Yummy and hot and fresh. Was it insane for taco lunch with no drinks to be $60? Also yes. Would I go back? Sure, if someone else is paying lol. read more
Ambiance (5/5): It's hard to beat the sunset views of the water. It can get extremely busy on even weekends so be prepared to call early or wait for 30min to 1hr. Service (4/5): Young staff members are hustling to give you the best service they can but it is extremely busy at times. They are always courteous! Dog friendly. Street Fries - usually their fries are great and cooked with a superior crunch and coated with a nice flavored. Other times, they can be a little soggy. Bang Bang Shrimp - skippable. I like the flavor but it is usually more batter than it is shrimp. Chicken BBQ Quesadilla - big fan. There's a good portion of chicken. I might ask for the BBQ sauce on the side next time instead of drizzled on top (which is how it comes). Oysters - Questionable tasting freshness Tuna nachos - meh Tacos from best to worst - the tacos are sizable! Shells hold well too Kung pao cauliflower - surprisingly the best. thai chili sauce sticks well on the battered tempura Salmon poke - salsa and soy dressing worked well Spare rib //Korean steak - both remembered being good Hot chicken - pretty good Pork and plantain - pork belly was not too seasoned and way too much slaw portion (5:1 ratio) Surf & turf - steak was super chewy Tuna - quality of the tuna was chunky and was bleh Crispy fish taco - on both counts was the worst taco by far read more
The food was great and staff were friendly. The only thing I wanted to mention was that our mussels were a little disappointing as there were a lot of unopened ones in our dish which were basically half the dish. Other than that, everything else was amazing! read more

Got the Korean bbq taco, surf and turf taco and bang bang shrimp taco along with the street fries. The food was a bit disappointing, the steak was over cooked and there were maybe 3 baby shrimp in the bang bang shrimp taco which sounds deceiving. It's more of a grilled shrimp taco with some slaw on top. Also got a margarita and rocket fuel which tasted like it was made with a mixer. Fries were good though. Service wasn't great, we forgot our to go box and went back for it not even 2 minutes later and they had told us that it was thrown out. The place had a nice view of the bay and the sun sets over it but wouldn't go again. read more

What a great waterside taco spot. They have a wonderful variety of tacos and not to mention their taco Tuesday is amazing( half off all tacos).Service is always quick and efficient and tacos are very consistent. My favorite go-to taco joint in the summer! read more

A super cool north shore Long Island spot. If you want the vineyard vines type feel, this is the place to go. The food is really delicious and they have a plethora of options when it comes to the menu. The tacos they have are so unique and creative and things I would never think to consider putting together on a taco. We happened to go here on a rainy night as a group of 8 and our waitress was very accommodating when it started down pouring. She didn't let the rain stop her from checking in on us just as if she would if it was a beautiful night on the water. Also, the tacos are like the size of my head but so worth trying the 4 I tried even though I couldn't finish them all! read more

Absolutely delicious tacos, 10/10 for flavor and quality. Nice water view, outdoor seating available. I've never had a reservation and the longest I waited was 20 min, which is definitely worth it. This places' tacos makes all other tacos seem mediocre. They are full of fresh ingredients and flavor. 2-3 tacos is plenty. The bang bang shrimp app is really good! Whales Tale is fun! They have at least three frozen drinks and the tacos are big and delicious. We had a lovely if not completely what you think of when you think of a pina colada and nachos to start. The nachos are also basic but good if you like a very very very basic nacho. The tacos are the star here. We had tuna, bang shrimp, turkey burnt ends, and Nashville chicken. The turkey burnt ends were unreal. And the tuna had the best wasabi sauce. Plus the tacos are hardy big boys. Perfect for an easy breezy drink and taco night. Plus you'll never know if it's the Whales Tale or the Whale's Tale which is just a lovely homage to Crazy Ex Girlfriend's Spiders/Spider's (IYKYK) read more
Definitely a fun spot to spend part of your weekend especially if you're checking out local parks or breweries nearby. The menu is loaded with great options especially if you're a seafood lover. Grab a taco...or 6! There tends to be a long line especially on weekends so prepare to wait some but you can just pop across the lot to the brewery to pass time with ease. The portions are solid for the price which makes them a quality bang for the buck option. Certainly will be back! read more

I was recently in the area and after reading reviews from many Yelpers and several local Elites, I decided it was time to finally try this spot for myself. It was a Sunday afternoon and since I ventured out solo, I decided to grab a seat at the bar (I sometimes like to be a lone-wolf and go on solo adventures..try it out, it's fun!). I was immediately greeted by Anna, who was bartending/serving. She was super friendly, funny, and knows a lot about the area as well. After perusing the menu, I ordered a plantain and pork taco, some mussels, and... four rum punches. My rum days are way behind me but it seemed really fitting given the waterfront vibe, especially with the sun setting in the distance. The rum punch: Strong, super tasty, and did I say strong? The plantain and pork taco: The sweetness of the plantains and the richness of the pork paired very well together. When I took my first bite, my mouth immediately enjoyed the complimentary combinations of the soft, chewy, and semi-tough textures. It kind of reminded of the last time I went out to eat venezuelan arepas. The mussels: What a huge portion! For only $14, I didn't expect the mussels to come with so many... mussels. It was absolutely delicious. What was really awesome was that not a single mussel was served unopened. I've had some good and bad experiences ordering them from other places, and this was one of the best. The sauce so was flavorful that I would literally slurp from the bowl when I realized no one was looking and the coast was clear. Finally, if you haven't noticed by the photos... the ambiance is amazing. If you're not adventuring solo like I was, this would be a great date spot or a place to catch up with a group of friends. The food and atmosphere are wonderful here! My friend and I came on a Thursday night at 7:30 and were told an hour and half wait. Luckily we grabbed a beer across the parking lot at the brewery and the wait was less than an hour. So the reason for my 4/5 stars is that once our buzzer went off the hostess said "we can't guarantee you a table but we have two seats at the bar". Something that should have been told to us when we first got there. We were starving so we just ate at the bar. We shared the queso blanco and the loaded fries then each had a taco. Both apps were awesome! Flavorful and great portions. The Korean beef taco was out of this world. The beef was so tender it melted in your mouth. Definitely worth the wait and I'd love to come back and sit at a table for a longer meal. read more

First time at Whales Tale, the food was incredible. Largest oysters I've ever seen. The tuna nachos were incredible and their taco selection did not disappoint. 10/10 recommend. The cocktails tasted much better than they looked. read more
Always a great time at whales tale! I love the food here and it's a great atmosphere as well. I must say though, I just went today for taco Tuesday and they put a "Covid surcharge" on the bill. It's on every bill - 3% surcharge. Now, I get it, there's a lot of inflation going on and it's understandable. But why would you put it as a "Covid surcharge"?!?! That just sounds horrible! We were so turned off by it. You want to write "inflation surcharge"? Ok, we get it. But to write "Covid" on there just was a huge turn off for us. I'd rather you raise your prices! Charge an extra .50 per taco! Food, drinks, service, atmosphere is a solid 4 but for that "surcharge" which isn't even mentioned on the menu is just disgusting. Please do better whales Tale! read more

Delicious food and an AMAZING view! It was pretty busy when I visited and was told that it would be an hour and a half wait. There's a brewery right across the restaurant so we (my friends and I) were encouraged to visit and get a drink. I got their kombucha and it was so yummy! My friends got the sour and down under beer and they both enjoyed it very much! We ended up being called after 45 minutes but I honestly wouldn't have been annoyed if it took longer because the music and view was a whole vibe! I ordered the ahi tuna burger and my friends basically ordered most of the tacos. My burger was an 8/10! It was so big, I couldn't even finish it but that's a good problem to have. I also tasted the shrimp and fried avocado taco and it was delicious! If I had enough space, I would've ordered tacos too. My friends were satisfied with their tacos and beer too. The staff are attentive and friendly. Overall great night night with even better drinks and food. read more
