It's been a year since I set foot in the Arndale and longer still since bought anything from here so I was a but apprehensive. Circling around the counter like a shark I was super excited with their selection. Everything looked fresh and tasty despite what the negative comments say. We were served very quickly despite it starting to be quite busy and she was lovely. For £40 we walked away with 1kg of tuna sashimi, salmon sashimi, 180g of scallops, 5 rock oysters and 3 red snappers.. ..I usually spend that on sushi alone.. Overall staff were attentive, paid attention to hygiene i.e cleaning hands every time they touched a fishy, wore masks and had great produce. Yes I will be back after me any my kitties devour this stash.

Its closest competitor is the smaller but more quaint fishery in Didsbury, Evans Fish, but for me this place tops it through the sheer selection offered at excellent prices. When you enter the room, just alongside the Arndale Food Market, you will be literally astounded. There are literally hundreds of fish on offer. You may also be scared, as some of them are huge and have really scary faces. They have everything you can imagine from cod and haddock through sea bream and jon dory to trout and mackerel. Apart from the fish they have crabs, including some blue one with patterns on their backs worthy of an art gallery. They have prawns, ranging from the very tiny to the absolutely huge. One type of prawn is so big you would honestly only want one per person. They also have oysters, which are an alarming 85p per one. They have mussels. They even have cod roe and caviar. The prices are all unbelievable, often £2 per fish or three for a fiver. They also do 'fish pie mix' which has chunks of white fish, salmon and smoked fish in, for two quid or so. Basically if you like fish, this is the best place in the world.

They staff are very helpful, friendly and very competent about what the are selling. I also like the oval shaped display plan the shelves are laid out it gives the customer a good mini tour around and see their fresh product. Another added bonus is that it is located in a spacious food section of the indoor market and the place is very clean and tidy. If you lucky you might find a unique catch on display when you visit, last year they had a 1.2 metre Swordfish caught from somewhere in West Africa on display.

I'm sure the slippery fella was included in the list of 10 Most Diabolical Fish on Earth that I was reading about on-line the other day. Anyhow, face to face with my sub-aquatic nemesis, I was truly amazed by this place. They have just about every possible type of fish and seafood one can think of, and more besides. I don't know how common this kind of comprehensive fish/seafood emporium is elsewhere, but I reckon it has to be worth a visit to Manchester alone and if you have some small children you could take, all the better! It's like some kind of edible museum. An aquarium of exotic tastes, no less. The staff were incredibly friendly too. I was told that the Conger Eel is often bought by African customers and you buy it by the slice. Other residents included huge bream and carp, a plethora of jet black catfish nestled barb to barb at the front of one side of the gargantuan oval counter and several decapitated fish heads, which according to the monger, are bought and used for fish stock. Further still along this plank of plenty, was the seafood section replete with pink spider crabs, king and emperor prawns, and an assortment of shellfish that ranged from cockles and whelks to oysters. What a place. Fin.

I am extremely disappointed with this store and their chosen parking management service, UKPS Ltd…read more I received an unfair parking charge despite being a customer at Wing Yip supermarket and upstairs Chinese Restaurant, and the notice was even sent to the wrong address, causing delays and preventing me from responding within the appeal period. When I submitted an appeal, UKPS completely ignored it, only for me to later receive a notice from a debt collection agency, adding even more stress. For those who want to visit this restaurant, be careful and reconsider, cause you will RECEIVE A PARKING CHARGE that cause you 100 POUNDS for parking even you had a meal and shopping there!!!

Turns out you have to go round the back (it's signposted for the restaurant, but the supermarket is here too). First up - social distancing, since it is 2020 after all. This is all handled really well - lots of signs about wearing face masks, antibacterial gel as you enter, marks on the floor for 2m distancing and screens around the checkouts; payments can be contactless; staff wear masks and gloves and even pass you your receipt in a plastic box. I'd say they're doing a better job than most shops full stop. OK, on to the produce - as you might expect you can get lots of ingredients for Chinese cooking here but there's so much more as well, with most east-Asian cuisines catered for from Vietnam to Japan. There's also a substantial amount of fresh meat and veg available, plus chiller and freezer cabinets as well as your store-cupboard staples. There are also appliances and things like crockery for sale. If you're running a business, there's a substantial cash and carry section at the far right of the store. Manchester has a few specialist supermarkets like this, but I think Wing Yip wins in terms of breadth of offering.

Situated down in China Town and opposite I am Pho, it's a bit narrow and claustrophobic but it's worth it if you're on your way back to Piccadilly station (like I often am) and looking to pick up some tasty Asian ingredients) There's frozen seafood and meats in the back, plus frozen dim sum and pork buns - loads of drinks, booze, sauces, spices and pickles - plus their selection of fresh fruit is pretty awesome, I'm amazed by how much variety all of these shops around here stock! They also seem to have a sideline in electronics and fixing things - I really wish I could read Mandarin/Cantonese as I reckon there's some cool stuff to be found here. They unlock phones too, I had my iphone done here at a much lower price than the high street!

They had bags of 10 individual packs of fortune cookies for 99p and I really, really wanted to buy some, but I couldn't think of when I would use them - there was also no obvious useby date and I'm sure I could probably find an equivalent back home in one of Glasgow's Chinese supermarkets. I like browsing Chinese supermarkets I happen upon and quite often buy a drink or snack for the road, and today I found a great range of non-dairy coconut mochi frozen snacks in a freezer by the entrance. I opted for a box of 6 of mixed flavours (£3.65) - vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, mango, black sesame, and green tea. Maybe a bit pricey to buy regularly when I could get a big tub of ice cream for that, but they are imported from Thailand, and it's great to try a new frozen treat that's ready to eat.

Here you can find fish sustainably sourced in the form of mackerel, red mullet, line-caught bass and even sushi as well as the elusive John Dory, my favourite fish, and wild lobster and turbot. Having won an award for Best Food and Drink Outlet from the Manchester Food and Drink Festival, the fish is handpicked and purchased daily, with deliveries coming in two to three times a day. 90% of the fish is wild and the products are seasonal, meaning that you can get freshwater fish and shellfish as well as deli products, poultry and game and even vegetables, strangely enough. The value for money factor is huge here, the decor is clean and cute and it's certainly popular with the locals. Definitely one to travel for.

Apart from the now very famous Christmas market, my next favourite annual event has to be the Fine Food Market, usually held between September and October every year in St Ann's Square. This is one event that no epicurean in their right mind would miss. Bringing together some of the biggest talents and producers in the North, expect to be fed by the best restaurants in town and offered some of the best home grown produce in the country. According to the government website, 'speciality meats, smoked foods (fish, cheese, meats and poultry) cheeses, chutneys, pickles, black puddings, ice cream, specialist ales and sloe gin' are just a very few items on sale here.

A mooch around the market is the perfect way to liven up an otherwise dull day at the office (or living room, if you work from home, like me), so as soon as the clock strikes 1pm, get yourself there. You're going to spend, on average, about a fiver for takeaway food from one of the stalls but portions are good - especially at the Hog Roast stall, where they'll ram your baguette so full of pork and apple sauce you won't know where to start. As well as food, you'll find a number of stalls selling art and hand-crafted decor for the home, plus vintage furniture and clothing in the market's main indoor area; The Orangery, where you can also see/hear live music at certain times throughout the day (check the signage outside for more details). I'm really impressed with this little market. It's brought a much-needed injection of 'quaint' to the city centre. I wish it was here all the time!
