Preparing for job interviews is not fun, which is why I am taking a break, since I have been slacking on my reviews! I have been looking for an Asian food store for awhile and bookmarked a couple that I saw here on Yelp. I forgot about them until I ran across my recipe for Jiaozi (dumplings/potstickers) and decided it was time to make them again. I suggested that we go to the Asian food store first as I usually find that I can find other ingredients that I would normally get at a regular store... and sometimes a bit cheaper!
It isn't difficult to find... huge pagoda out front! There is free parking for customers, but I have a feeling when the place is very busy, it might be difficult to find parking. There is also a restaurant on site, which we will have to come back and try another time. Mr. Snarky grabbed a shopping cart and mentioned how it was more like a shopping cart in the U.S. I assume that meant fixed back wheels? Anyhow, the moment I entered I was like a kid in a candy store. Mr. Snarky was trying to keep me on task, but I had to explore!
If you are looking for dishes, rice cookers (omg the rice cookers!), cooking equipment (for your own kitchen or an industrial kitchen), etc. they have it all and for really reasonable prices. I bought two bamboo steamers, just over two quid each (including the lids) as I thought we could have some steamed dumplings as well... not to mention my cheapo rice cooker didn't come with a steamer insert so this was a must!
Walls of soy sauce, vinegars, and chili sauces offer so much variety that you may have trouble picking one! I had a soy sauce in mind, however, they didn't have it on the shelves. It wasn't very surprising as I didn't think they would carry much for Filipino items, although I did find a few Filipino brands... just not the ones that I wanted. However, I must have picked the right soy sauce as it has a similar flavor to the one I wanted. At this point you must be thinking I'm nuts, but yes, I am picky about soy sauce... even rice, but they really aren't all the same.
There are walls of instant noodles... yes they may be intimidating because you don't know what flavor they are, but try them, they are miles better than the Pot Noodles at your regular grocery store. You can buy condiments, seasoning, rice, veg, and meats in industrial sizes, or you can get them in smaller sizes for your own kitchen. Personally if we had storage space, we would have bought a large bag of Jasmine rice because I am always running out of rice! I do like the huge selection of frozen items, particularly the dumplings. While I was making dumplings from scratch, I have not yet learned the way of the Xiaolongbao (Shanghai Soup Dumpling), so I decided we would grab a package of those and have Dim Sum. I noticed that they also have Mantou and other steamed buns, although I didn't see any Baozi, which I would have grabbed up.
I love that there is a small bakery at the back of the store. I had to restrain myself, but they had Youtiao (a fried dough, not sweetened, but they did have one that is sweetened) and something that looked like Shaobing, but I didn't see a label so I can't be sure. There were loads and loads of chillers and freezers of meat and seafood. Sure there were some unusual bits, but they also have the usual cuts of meat that you would find at your local store. We found huge racks of ribs for a reasonable price and the next time I make ribs, we'll probably go here to get them. I found dumpling and egg roll wrappers... loads of different sizes.
I was a bit surprised that I couldn't find Chinese Yard Long Beans in the veg section so I ended up having to go with regular green beans, but at least they had something that I could substitute with. They also had beautiful selections of Bok Choy and Napa Cabbage. And... I got a huge piece of ginger for 91p. I told Mr. Snarky that I would never be able to use it all and he said, "But it's 91p!" So now I am looking for recipes using ginger... lots of it! Also in the veg and fruit area, they have tofu, various cakes made with Pandan, sushi, and eggs. They also carry the 'Thousand-year-old Egg' or Century Egg (a preserved egg) and Salted Duck Eggs.
They have staff to bag your items, makes me feel like I am back in the U.S.! There are loads of great ingredients here, from the exotic to the everyday ingredients. While I will still need to check out some other stores to see if I can find some of the more specialist items I am looking for, this store is a great start. read more
