We came to one of WGBH's events for the first time recently - and had such a blast! The studio is a beautiful space with easy parking right next door. There was a gorgeous entryway where they were selling drinks and snacks (which were pretty reasonably priced!). They had a bit of a bizarre token system (you buy a token, then give it to a person at the same table to buy a snack/drink) - but it wasn't really a detraction from the event, more just a little strange. This may or may not be how drinks/snacks are handled for all WGBH events. The program we saw was a taping of Stories from the Stage - and it was SO cool! Each of the speakers was inspiring and authentic. It was also interesting to see some of the mechanics behind how television tapings are done (e.g. having to redo a few intros, getting some shots of all of us laughing, etc.). The host of the evening was terrific as well, and all of the fellow audience members were extremely friendly. Would definitely recommend checking out some of the events here, especially the television tapings like Stories from the Stage! read more

For a radio/TV station they do a phenomenal job on broadcast. Really glad to have them around. I particularly like that they hire people who are not fully qualified to be radio presenters who may be partially sighted or have other disabilities because they have trouble reading the "W" in WGBH. Not many other stations would be that brave to disbrand themselves with such presenters and allow them to continue through such repeated errors without correction. (I may be misguided about this, and just not listening clearly.) Fun fact, WGBH and Great Blue Hill part share the same initials! There is even a ski area on GBH named somewhat after WGBH, Blue Hills. rest is well. But, shame on GBH or WGBH for the 1-star reviews. read more

I WGBH had a Zoom event last month featuring author, Kristin Hannah. She was wonderful!! I ordered a signed copy of her latest novel, The Women. After multiple phone call and emails trying to get an answer from someone on staff, I was told that the signed copies were only for those who attended the event. I told them I did attend. They replied well the book is only for members, well I just paid $60 for the membership so I could get the signed copy. The woman was lost. She didn't know what happened - and she was not going to have the book shipped to me. This was going to be a special gift for my daughter who loves Hannah. Pathetic customer service! read more

Be careful if using a credit card as a sustaining member. They hit my credit card three times in one month, refused to refund, then dragged their feet on canceling. No one answers the members' phone line, no one answers emails. read more

What a great event last night put on by WGBH! "An evening with Sherlock Holmes" had plenty of food, drinks, speakers and mystery fun. Lots of fans in costume and plenty of things to look at and do. Photo booth, fingerprinting, and a crime to solve made this plenty if fun. It was $75 for non-members and $65 for members. You will get your monies worth. Parking was nearby in their lot and free. You could also donate $15 and get a mystery bag. Inside mine? Books, CDs, and a Downton Abbey Bell! read more

I have always loved the programming at WGBH. I have supported many programs over the years. So when my optometric practice was contacted by an advertising company (PERKS) that specifically partners with WGBH ( They had a WGBH letterhead welcoming us ), I thought it was a great fit. Unfortunately, PERKS took thousands of dollars from us. They not only failed to put us in their advertising program, they refused to refund us. So my only recourse was to fight the charge on the credit card, and of course contact WGBH. I was unable to get a response from either Mary Sparacia or Donna Stone at PERKS. I had also called WGBH on three occassions and was told I would hear back. No one has ever called me back and they continue to charge us monthly. I cannot find PERKS on Yelp or I would rate them too. WGBH makes a lot of money on donations, and I thought that they would me more interested in a fraudulent company partnering with them. Think long and hard about doing business with these guys. read more

Thank you WGBH for such amazing, thought provoking programming! WBGH sets the standard for what a NPR/PBS station should be. They do wonderful work in the arts, culture, and science! WBGH is responsible for such excellent programming, like Nova, a science program, and Frontline, a news show. There are no commercials on WGBH television or radio, but they have pledge drives which can be a bit annoying. During pledge drive week, I generally have to change the station to escape the pleas for cash. They give regular weather updates, and carry all the cool programming that's available from other PBS/NPR stations. The news can be a bit left-leaning, but that's always a nice point of view. They're not alarmist on this radio station (except during pledge drive week!) and keep the news in perspective. My favorite time to listen is on the weekends when they have the fun programming. read more

I basically like WGBH radio for the resident announcers and generally for their programming, that's why I give it 3 stars. But there is one program I can really do without: The Takeaway. Arrogant know-it-all Hockenberry drives me nuts. His co-host is harmless, but the show is only occasionally informative and substantial. Their financial expert, Beth has one of the most annoying voices I have ever heard on public radio, nails on a chalkboard would be a compliment (does she ever listen to herself?). I hate all the silly listener polls too. Get rid of The Takeaway or you'll lose more listeners to WBUR read more

I've been lucky enough to have visited both the Office building and the Studios space and it is very impressive. One would never imagine this station is right there surrounded by a very industrial area on one side and a very residential area on the other. Every single staff person I have encountered in the place is beyond helpful and they offer tours to visitors even while private events are going on. They recently produced a series called Latin Music USA and I officially fell in love with Public TV forever!! I very much enjoy they cutting edge programming for audiences of color and the effort they put into reaching out to an array of cultures. WGBH can throw a kick ass party!!! read more

WGBH holds a special place in my heart, having grown up in Massachusetts. I was so excited to visit their beautiful, brand new "green" building recently. It's definitely worth a visit! They have a gorgeous sound stage where members can go hear live music in what was called by our tour guide an "acoustically perfect" room, with beautiful wood all over the floors and walls and a shiny new piano at the front of the room. Not to mention that they broadcast a heck of a lot of great TV and radio shows. Thanks for all your great programming and congrats on your great new digs! read more

The WGBH shows are good, and we pay to be members, but WGBH fails to mark their shows with the correct identification so my TiVo can record the right programs! All too frequently we think we have recorded a show but then find out it was an entirely different offering. Why? Almost every other channel is able t get it right! read more

I've been watching WGBH since I was young. I grew up watching shows like Sesame Street and Shining Time Station and liked the station idents. I'm in awe of WGBH and I don't even live in the Boston area (I once lived here but that was years ago). For one thing, the quality of the programming produced for PBS is outstanding. For example, last night I saw the fascinating two-hour documentary on the "Making of Citizen Kane," part of the "American Experience Series. Two weeks earlier I saw the documentary on the Beales ("Big" and "Little Edie"). And before that, "Caring for your Aging Parents" on DVD). With the advent of Internet radio, the streaming broadcasts of classical music on WGBH are a delight. The radio announcements are both discrete and brief. By comparison, my local (Seattle) classical music station has tons of junk-filled commercials. I don't know if there is a list of "Best classical music stations" around the world, but this, I bet, would rank near the top. Bostonians have much to be proud of--not just their fine public library, institutions of higher learning, symphony, and elected representatives. read more

This past month, Central Square Theater had the great opportunity to sit in on NOVA's Science Café at Middlesex Lounge. Events in this series are held in casual settings around the country, bringing scientists and others (like our staff!) together to engage in conversation about current developments in science. Dr. Lisa Lehmann hosted this month's seminar, which held space for conversation about the ethical considerations surrounding gene-based medicine. The conversation was great; these events encourage people to spend wind-down time after work engaging on topics that - in this case - will impact medicine in the very near future. read more

How can you give less than 5 for public TV and radio? I love NOVA (the way science should be explained without all the trade jargon that requires a trained reader) and NPR. More specially, Morning Edition, Weekend Edition, All Things Considered, and Boston Symphony Orchestra. Have you seen NHK in Japan? The govt needs to provide more money for even better quality public broadcasting like that. In the meantime, they are supported by viewers and listeners like you. read more

I can never get enough... I just hate that I have to switch from 89.7 to 88.5 when I pass Exit 8 on the Mass Pike (Going West)....You need a longer range! Sigh. .. ..That's not to say that I actually do switch... I much prefer listening to some of the static and shows like Sunday nights' 10pm Invention Show... than other things on the radio at that point...... Have you ever actually BEEN to this building? I have! I've volunteered here a few times. It's a pretty sweet place. It's a new building - lots of open floorspace - both in the hallways and adjoining sets/filming rooms. What do you call them? The rooms where they film stuff? Well, whatever - the rooms with the lights and crap. The functions I've been to here are great - well organized, well attended and just a lot of fun. I highly recommend you look into volunteering here. The location kinda blows - I find a lot of traffic everytime I drive here - but - well, what can ya do. Plenty of parking for guests all around in adjoining lots. The people who work here are wicked nice and helpful. I think it's just great. read more

I USED to listen EVERY DAY (or, to be more accurate (as WGBH is often NOT) every night) Now, there is NO POINT We can get NPR (if we are lame enough to want it) on many other channels but Jazz is now left to the freshmen at Hah-vahd (Shudder!) Sent an email requesting a local host's autograph. Three months went by of back and forth emails. Never got the autograph. Never got an explanation why. Never got an apology. Asked to have the email chain sent to an executive. Never got any response from any exec. Asked to be removed from their mailing list, yet continued to get their mailings asking for money. Sent another email again asking to be removed from email list. No response. Sent the email a second time. No response. Sent a third time asking to be connected to the person in charge...awaiting a response (if any). Amazing such a respected organization is so unprofessional and disorganized. Something that should have been handled very quickly and easily turned into a disaster and they lost a listener (and occasional donor) in the process. Your contributions are clearly not going toward customer service. As an aside, it seems they should be more transparent regarding contributions and expenses. Did contributions go toward funding and stocking those WGBH Learningsmith stores in malls that eventually went out of business? It's also not right that they dip into your pocket so often. They get money from the state and Federal government (which comes from your taxes), from business underwriters (which comes from you buying their goods or services), from on-air fundraisers, and from mailings asking you for additional money. How many times are they going to dip in your pocket? Your contributions are literally going into their pockets since you pay their salaries. They're probably earning more than you with better benefits, and you're paying for it. Have you seen their new environmentally "green" office building? Have a look sometime and see what your contributions helped to build (in addition to them selling off old real estate). When they fund raise, at the end why don't they disclose on the air exactly how much they raised? And when they fail to meet their goal, why don't they disclose on the air what the consequences are? How much is their CEO making? Why did they ditch their morning classical music show and very popular Music America afternoon drive show? They're duplicating a lot of what WBUR is doing and was doing before they were, rather than offering a clear alternative. read more

Very frustrated. I joined WGBH 4 days ago. I was successful signing on right away. I wanted to watch The Tunnel S2-1 on the weekend. I work! Today is Saturday and something is wrong. I cannot sign in. I've tried several ways for help with the "Forgot User Name?" with no luck. And there is no customer service available to help. It's Labor Day weekend so that means no help until Tuesday 9/6. Unacceptable. I am cancelling my membership. It is frustrating to need help on a weekend when no one is available. read more

I own a clock radio.. and that's about it. I don't have a car radio (err.. or a car) or a boombox or a stereo system. That being said, I do find ways to keep up with the "kids' music" and new music though through MySpace, friends recommendations, and Pandora. But, if I want to get my jazz on (of the hard variety).. WGBH RIPS YOU OFF WHEN YOU BUY TICKETS FOR TOWER OF POWER. I donated $210 for two tickets to Tower of Power at the Wilbur Theater. They said they were fantastic seats especially set aside for donors. Well the great seats were second from the back in the Balcony. $210 for two tickets whose face value is $48 per ticket. Shame on you WGBH. read more

I was born in Boston, but left for the west coast in 1984, but I have always loved the programs produced by WGBH that are played by all the PBS stations we have here on the west coast. They have produced the most wonderful British TV series and movies, they are so many that I love so much I have bought them on DVD. Here are just a few of my favorites; Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Keeping Up appearances, Miss Marple, Rosemary & Thyme, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and many more to mention, but my favorite of all "Poirot". Keep up the good work and I'll keep watching and donating to my local PBS station!! read more

I continue to hope the 99.5 Classical Radio, will change their evening programing as I feel it is terrible. The am and afternoon programing is great, but the evening, in my opinion is terrible. Lets hope we can get them to provided some light relaxing music. I do not like organ musice and choral programing when I am trying to relax and read. Some light POPS music would be appreciated. The previous station was always terrific. It is now 4/25 and the evening programing for WGBH classical continues to be very poor. I wish they would let the morning or afternoon programers help out. Most of the time I turn the station off. The previous station was a delight in the evening. read more

Jazz on WGBH has been an essential part of the Boston jazz scene for as long as I can remember, at least since 1977. Recently the management has cut the heart out of the jazz programming by relegating Eric Jackson to weekends and canning Steve Schwartz. There are also rumors they will be ending the overnight syndicated Bob Parlocha program. The writing is on the wall - the remaining nine hours of Eric's show will go next. In doing this, WGBH is creating a redundant, second NPR news/talk format in the Boston market, following WBUR. While I personally love and rely on such programs for part of my radio listening, I don't need to choose between two of them, 24, hours a day. If GBH wants to produce a couple hours a day of local news programs - AOK. Local is good. But duplicating all the syndicated national shows does not enhance the radio environment in this market. read more

WGBH radio provided top quality classical music to all of Eastern Massachusetts at one time. But now they are trying to run WBUR out of town, so they put news on their best channel and classical music is broadcast from a location near the NH boarder. So those of us south of Boston get poor, if any reception of classical music from WGBH. This is why I don't give them money any more. read more

As good as their programming is the footprint on brighton is awful.The building which resembles an aluminum siding salesman style book and the jumbotron which is visible to about 2 % of Brighton residents was bad enough but now the 500 linear feet of green space more resembles the landscaping of Grossmans across the street than an urban oasis. read more
