Guster is ALWAYS a great show, just saw them last month at the Opera House, and they played an amazing show and were hilarious. But anyway, WBOS is one of my favs, always playing new music. Rarely play a song to death like some of the other Boston-based stations. There's always a nice variety, which the other stations aren't too keen on either.

I loved that station; they actually played quality music that was not in the cheesey 'adult contemporary' genre. I discovered lots of great singer-songwriters through their station like Brandi Carlile, Chantal Kreviazuk, etc. I used to love their Sunday Over-Easy acoustic show, and they had a similar After-Dark program at night where they would play tunes and discuss them intelligently with a local music critic. They also promoted Paula Cole's back-to-the-spotlight concert, and continued to play Sheryl Crow's recent albums even though they didn't garner much attention from Top 40 stations. Can you tell I like female singer-songwriters, by the way?? Anyhow, back to its current programming: I call this station "Nineties- two nine," since they play all 90s alternative rock. It was nostalgic at first, and I enjoyed singing along to some of the older tunes [while simultaneously feeling horrified that I'm so old that the decade of music I grew up listening to now needs its own station.] But they seem to only repeat the hits of the 90s, and really, I ask you this: how much Offspring can one person take? The pre-recorded female radio announcer sounds smug and self-righteous. I want to reach into the radio and slap her face. She recorded really stupid one liners to introduce the commercials like, "Raise your hand if you want to hear more music in just sixty seconds." Asinine! or, "We play great music, and our advertisers pay our electric bill. Good deal!" or some sh*t to that effect. It makes me want to die. So, in conclusion: Hate it. RIP WBOS, and to the awesome artists they used to book at Earthfest. This year it's Cake, Cracker, English Beat, and The Bo-Deans. And if they do the free Copley concerts this summer like WBOS used to, I'm sure it'll be more washed-up 90s acts. Ugh.

How can a station that plays songs spanning the last half century have such a limited selection? It doesn't make sense! Lately, they've been playing this commercial about how you could win 1,000 free music downloads. The commercial explains that with a 1,000 song library, you could drive all the way across the country and still have songs you haven't listened to yet. I *love* folk, and I love independent radio- so I should be an avid WUMB listener, but I'm not- and…read moreif they can't capture MY listenership, then who the heck is listening?! Let me start at the beginning- there's a lot I like about WUMB. They play a lot of indie singer-songwriters (and some established ones), and they're remained true to their folk roots. They are not overrun by corporate nonsense. The downside: WUMB feels REALLY old. I have no empirical evidence for this, but my gut is that the average age of listeners is somewhere in the 50-65 bracket. While I appreciate that they have remained faithful to the WUMB formula, and have refused to sell out (i.e. I hate the new WERS and really miss the days when ERS had actual SHOWS!), I also can't help but wonder if their staunch adherence to a very old formula isn't going to eventually kill the station. Why not have a few DJs who seem a bit younger? WHy not invite more community participation? They just seem like they need a bit of fresh air for the next decade...

A bit of driving around the Boston area when my radio's "seek" button landed me on WBUR. Clear reception, a few reminders that they're "supported by listeners like you" and some regional/world news. I'm familiar with the NPR format and this is one of the oldest stations in the NPR network. They did a fine job today of keeping me entertained.
