I *love* folk, and I love independent radio- so I should be an avid WUMB listener, but I'm not- and…read moreif they can't capture MY listenership, then who the heck is listening?! Let me start at the beginning- there's a lot I like about WUMB. They play a lot of indie singer-songwriters (and some established ones), and they're remained true to their folk roots. They are not overrun by corporate nonsense. The downside: WUMB feels REALLY old. I have no empirical evidence for this, but my gut is that the average age of listeners is somewhere in the 50-65 bracket. While I appreciate that they have remained faithful to the WUMB formula, and have refused to sell out (i.e. I hate the new WERS and really miss the days when ERS had actual SHOWS!), I also can't help but wonder if their staunch adherence to a very old formula isn't going to eventually kill the station. Why not have a few DJs who seem a bit younger? WHy not invite more community participation? They just seem like they need a bit of fresh air for the next decade...

College radio is widely understood as the freeform radio vanguard, where one can hear musical offerings unavailable on commercial radio. When I tune into a college station, I don't want to hear a single song I know. 99% of what WERS plays nowadays is Top 40 "alternative" music from the 80s and 90s. Stuff I've been sick of for decades. Honk shoo. It's a college station masquerading as a commercial station masquerading as a twenty year-old iPod. If you are a retailer looking for the most unchallenging background noise for your shoppers to ignore, or perhaps a listener looking for a radio station to convince you that not only has there been no good music made in the past 35 years, but also that maybe music was just never good, WERS is it.

Your average local paper…read more I used to deliver for them. Circulation is wayyyy down lately. Local papers just can't cut it. Kids don't do paper routes anymore. They are too busy updating myspace or facebook. In it's hey-day, EVERYONE in Winchester/Woburn subscribed to this paper. I had my picture in it many times - what can I say, I'm a pretty face!!! Well, they used to call it "interesting".... that's the same thing, right!?!?!? Have you read this thing lately? Not much to it - not worth the $. Sort of a joke. When I used to deliver it - getting people to pay was hell. One time this particular house hadn't paid in weeks and weeks - it was ridiculous. They were never home to pay. That meant I paid their subscription until I could collect. When I finally got a hold of them, it came to like $100. They were pissed. They yelled at me for not collecting from them sooner. I didn't care. They owed me money and were never home. It wasn't my fault. I stood my ground - made the jerks pay up. Got a $100 with my name on it. And THAT is how I paid for college!!!! If you like that story and want to hear more, send me money! It'll be like I actually work for yelp or something! Why not! Plenty of people who work for'em leave garbage reviews, why not me too!!!!

It has an excellent classifieds section and job section as well. It has award winning sports coverage and interesting localized articles! I enjoy the mix of regional, local and national/world news. I also like how the Daily times covers both sides in an unbiased manner. The paper is 60 cents and can be found in a number of local establishments and convinence stores in Woburn/Winchester.

Especially now that its focus/form might be changing to support the WAM! Conference more fully. CNW is/was both a program dedicated to providing the support for women to make their voices heard and a physical space in which to do so. The space is a little small, but it looks badass. For the QWOC week event I came for earlier this year, I had to sit on the floor under a table just to fit in the room, but it was such a cool event that I didn't care. CNW has run so many programs that thinking about the logistics of them all alone boggles my small mind. Between author events, regular discussions like Feminism and Dessert (now run in conjunction with Boston NOW), one off parties and events, and the WAM! Conference, CNW has been all up in the gender justice world, taking it to the limit. I got to attend a couple of CNW events and pretty much all of them blasted my brain to oblivion with awesome new ideas. If you're looking for the opportunity to explore more feminist space in Boston, or if you female and looking to get your voice heard on substantive issues of our day, CNW is the place to be up at.

Now there's a newspaper version. The Weekly Dig used to have at least one article each issue -- several, usually -- that actually *added* something to the world, rather than simply comment on, complained about, or advertised it. But no, actual original content has fallen far down the ladder behind "personality" pieces -- articles in which the real subject is the author him/herself, and the purported topic is just the vehicle for this person to showcase their idea of how funny/annoyed/cool they want you to know they are. In fact it's sort of like this one web site that's popular nowadays, you know the one... Seriously, it goes out of its way to make Stuff at Night look sincere. Is that really worth the trouble?

Not really - compared to other freebie magazines it's far more reasonable. Too short? Nope - that's a bonus for me - a svelte tome is much more up my street than a hefty wad. Too immature and snarky? Come on, we're on Yelp here - that's our style too. So 5 out of 5 it is. Keep up the great work and the great artwork. Now give me a job please.
