When I tune into a college station, I don't want to hear a single song I know. 99% of what WERS plays nowadays is Top 40 "alternative" music from the 80s and 90s. Stuff I've been sick of for decades. Honk shoo. It's a college station masquerading as a commercial station masquerading as a twenty year-old iPod. If you are a retailer looking for the most unchallenging background noise for your shoppers to ignore, or perhaps a listener looking for a radio station to convince you that not only has there been no good music made in the past 35 years, but also that maybe music was just never good, WERS is it.

WBCN is in quite a conundrum…read more Rock, as we once knew it, is, well, dead. You can hear it in the station. The entire format and base music hasn't changed one bit in over 12 years. Tune in and you'll be greeted by Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, or mid nineties grunge and slight post grunge rock. Maybe if you're particularly unlucky you'll get something like Fred Durst yelling to himself. Now this isn't really their fault. I mean look what's out there right now. Evanesence? Mushroom head? Linkin Park? My Chemical Romance? None of these bands are really, well, good. Not to say that Alice In Chains is the best music ever created, but there was more universal like and overlap to that than listening to FALLOUT BOY. And I think that's why they haven't changed. 'BCN (as we call it here in Bahstahn) is still trying to cater to the 35 year old commuter from Quincy to the 15 year old high school student from Newton, to the 23 year old college guy. And rock's gotten too polarized for that. I used to listen to the DIAMOND DAVID LEE ROTH show back when that complete lack of funny was on the air and I couldn't believe it. Capitol try though, guys. Maybe the next wave of rock is brewing?

Sure you have the typos, occasional grammatical errors, and in-town backscratching going on, but sometimes the paper gets a really good scoop and the editors care very much about fostering new talent and generally keep a very open mind for stories. The newstalk section can be pretty funny sometimes and also gives you a good feel for the soul of old-time Somerville. I guess some people might call the paper more "conservative" than The Somerville Journal. Whatever. In my opinion, it's just more INTERESTING and you get the sense that the powers that be at the paper are invested in infusing it with some personality. Sure they've been through some missteps in the past, but I think they recognize the responsibility that comes with running a paper and are up for the challenge. Here's hoping that this independent paper stays the course and has many more years in business.

Generally the format is the more commercial sounding which will drive you nuts. There's only so much Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross one can take. I hate Rick Ross btw. At any rate, Boston hiphop alumni Edo G hosts a dope sunday show that focuses on indy/rootsy hiphop. Another Boston hiphop alum Jeff 2X (formerly Def Jeff from Almighty RSO/Made Men/Hangmen 3) is also in the building here. The saturday dancehall show is straight up insanity too. The downside (at times) is the screaming. Every single DJ screams at this station. Sometimes the energy is there but a lot of the time its just annoying. Also, they bang through mixes very quickly at times playing only one minute of a track. This is annoying especially if they put on your joint and you're like.... awww shhhhh thats my jam!!! ... but then.... its GONE and they go into another Rick Ross song. UGH! Also, dont believe all their screamy hype - not every DJ in their roster is dope. A couple need to work on their mic sets and practice scratching with serrato at home to perfect it before hitting the airwaves.

It also pays special attention to the people of color community, something not so common in mainstream GLBT publications. This paper is the talk of the town, or at least my circle. My son has a disorder and is on an IEP; school has always been challenging for him, and at times, his guitar lessons had to take a back seat so he could focus on his academic needs. This summer, he was required to attend summer school due to those challenges. We communicated this to Zumix and asked if he could take a temporary break from lessons. The response we received from Jennifer was disheartening: "We've had to offer your lesson time to one of the many students currently on our waitlist who are eager and ready to jump in." While I understand there is high demand, this response lacked any compassion or effort to find a solution. It sent a clear message: that my child, who has already faced so many obstacles, is easily replaceable. Instead of feeling like part of a community, we felt discarded. There was no flexibility, no outreach, and no sense that they cared about my child's journey or well-being. If your child has a disability or needs some grace and understanding, I would strongly urge you to proceed with caution. This experience was a painful reminder that not all youth organizations are equipped--or willing--to support children with unique needs.
