Programming tends to lean toward "safe" and presentation is more professional/polished rather than say... some stoned kid rambling on incoherently over edgy or experimental material. However they do play some brutal metal and death metal so they do keep it real with non-comm shit. Theyre worth a listen if you're totally bored with your ipod (as I was when I've tuned in). Actually right now 3/1/2012 @ 21:30 I'm listening to a kid do an entire segment or show on Van Halen which is pretty awesome. Their webstream is ridiculously sucky though at 40kbps !!!

Guster is ALWAYS a great show, just saw them last month at the Opera House, and they played an amazing show and were hilarious. But anyway, WBOS is one of my favs, always playing new music. Rarely play a song to death like some of the other Boston-based stations. There's always a nice variety, which the other stations aren't too keen on either.

I loved that station; they actually played quality music that was not in the cheesey 'adult contemporary' genre. I discovered lots of great singer-songwriters through their station like Brandi Carlile, Chantal Kreviazuk, etc. I used to love their Sunday Over-Easy acoustic show, and they had a similar After-Dark program at night where they would play tunes and discuss them intelligently with a local music critic. They also promoted Paula Cole's back-to-the-spotlight concert, and continued to play Sheryl Crow's recent albums even though they didn't garner much attention from Top 40 stations. Can you tell I like female singer-songwriters, by the way?? Anyhow, back to its current programming: I call this station "Nineties- two nine," since they play all 90s alternative rock. It was nostalgic at first, and I enjoyed singing along to some of the older tunes [while simultaneously feeling horrified that I'm so old that the decade of music I grew up listening to now needs its own station.] But they seem to only repeat the hits of the 90s, and really, I ask you this: how much Offspring can one person take? The pre-recorded female radio announcer sounds smug and self-righteous. I want to reach into the radio and slap her face. She recorded really stupid one liners to introduce the commercials like, "Raise your hand if you want to hear more music in just sixty seconds." Asinine! or, "We play great music, and our advertisers pay our electric bill. Good deal!" or some sh*t to that effect. It makes me want to die. So, in conclusion: Hate it. RIP WBOS, and to the awesome artists they used to book at Earthfest. This year it's Cake, Cracker, English Beat, and The Bo-Deans. And if they do the free Copley concerts this summer like WBOS used to, I'm sure it'll be more washed-up 90s acts. Ugh.

Instead of letting students take the lead, they hire a few cringeworthy amateurs like their insuffurable afternoon drive announcer and a host of their weekend Coffeehouse acoustic show who brings in the same six albums in her collection every week and plays the same one song from each. Last Saturday, I counted more than half a dozen songs which are played virtually every week. The careers of two of her favorites--Joanna Newsom and Broken Social Scene--hopefully be cut short by the international shortage of helium. They sound like Alvin and the Chipmunk tribute bands. Musical tastes are subjective but if the announcers don't know anything about the music, they should educate themselves. That's what college is supposedly about. The host of The Coffeehouse talks more about coffee than music. (Her conversation mirrors her musical choices--every comment on repeat). WERS might be able to cut back on their now incessant fundraising drives if they diverted some of the money they spend on MBTA advertising back into the station and if their management would more responsive to their students and their listeners.

Honk shoo. It's a college station masquerading as a commercial station masquerading as a twenty year-old iPod. If you are a retailer looking for the most unchallenging background noise for your shoppers to ignore, or perhaps a listener looking for a radio station to convince you that not only has there been no good music made in the past 35 years, but also that maybe music was just never good, WERS is it.

Almost nobody outside of Waltham knows about this station and only a small number of local…read moreresidents have stumbled across it at 100.1 FM. Yet this station, the radio voice of Brandeis University is a welcome relief from the slick overprogrammed junk filling the commercial airwaves. WBRS provides a bit of everything for its listeners. In the mornings there is contemporary rock music, especially some of the older punk stuff and edgy independent tunes that other stations are afraid to play. Later on a listener might hear ethnic, folk, or reggae or, perhaps some sports talk from a couple of college students. It's eclectic and creative, with an emphasis on content. While most radio stations are constrained by a tightly programmed format WBRS breaks free from these bounds. It's a reminder of how smaller stations can be more entertaining than the children of media powerhouses. Only reason it loses one star is because of its low-power transmitter.
