I love NECN! It is the one reason why I have not canceled my basic cable package and just purchased…read morea converter box. They have really excellent programs and I enjoy watching almost everything that's on. NECN is my go-to TV station when I have no clue what's on. Often I just have it on in the background while I'm doing chores. The local news coverage is great and it's on pretty much all the time. I also really enjoy the Does It Work segments, the weather with Matt Noyes and TV Diner with Billy Costa and Jenny Johnson. As a business student, I love CEO Corner and The Boss. These shows are really cool because they feature local CEOs and local businesses and allow you to really get a feel for the business strategies and the keys to each business's success. I really enjoyed the episodes on Honey Dew Donuts, Life is Good, and Pez. The only thing I don't enjoy about NECN is the rare hours when they show infomercials, like on Saturdays in the mid-afternoon. Other than that, it's all love.

For those that do not, get with the times and pay the $20 for basic cable. I like NECN b/c it's all about local coverage. They have round the clock news, weather, sports and stories to pertain to our daily lives. It's a great way to get a good read on what is happening locally. I can't really watch regular news on 4,5 and 7 b/c they're on at fixed times and really dramatize the news. It's too much like "Current Affair" the tv show back in the 80s. Yes I am dating myself. I can watch NECN and get the news on MY TIME. Plus there are several personalities on NECN I enjoy. ;) They have great shows like the TV Diner with Kiss 108 sidekick Billy Costa, CEO Corner, NE Dreamhouse and of course the weekend morning news. No kiddie toons for me.

Now there's a newspaper version. The Weekly Dig used to have at least one article each issue -- several, usually -- that actually *added* something to the world, rather than simply comment on, complained about, or advertised it. But no, actual original content has fallen far down the ladder behind "personality" pieces -- articles in which the real subject is the author him/herself, and the purported topic is just the vehicle for this person to showcase their idea of how funny/annoyed/cool they want you to know they are. In fact it's sort of like this one web site that's popular nowadays, you know the one... Seriously, it goes out of its way to make Stuff at Night look sincere. Is that really worth the trouble?

It was a great publication to find out about events as well as new eating establishments and stomping grounds. So when a friend of mine from San Francisco was planning to open a sushi restaurant in Boston, I said I would looking to advertising rates at certain publications. I called up the Improper and spoke to the ad exec. I explained that the restaurant is still in the business plan phase and I am helping make a budget and Idon't know anything else. She kept asking for the owners' names plus chefs, investors. I told her I didn't know and reiterated that it is still in the planning phase. She then asks where is it going to be? What style of decor? Can I fax a menu to her? I politely explained that I didn't know while here tone was condescending, aggressive, and she used some profanity. At this point I hung up. Don't people realize that you get more bees with honey and vinegar? I think that there is a certain respect you have for people in general. But I feel bad for the management/owner of the Improper as one of the uncouth rogue employees acted idiotically. I don't see why she was so rude there was no point in it and I am less likely to give money to someone who is rude.

A bit of driving around the Boston area when my radio's "seek" button landed me on WBUR. I…read moregenerally avoid talk radio, preferring music, but there was something today that sounded interesting. I stuck with it for a while. Clear reception, a few reminders that they're "supported by listeners like you" and some regional/world news. I'm familiar with the NPR format and this is one of the oldest stations in the NPR network. They did a fine job today of keeping me entertained.
