Yet this station, the radio voice of Brandeis University is a welcome relief from the slick overprogrammed junk filling the commercial airwaves. WBRS provides a bit of everything for its listeners. In the mornings there is contemporary rock music, especially some of the older punk stuff and edgy independent tunes that other stations are afraid to play. Later on a listener might hear ethnic, folk, or reggae or, perhaps some sports talk from a couple of college students. It's eclectic and creative, with an emphasis on content. While most radio stations are constrained by a tightly programmed format WBRS breaks free from these bounds. It's a reminder of how smaller stations can be more entertaining than the children of media powerhouses. Only reason it loses one star is because of its low-power transmitter.

WMEX began as a radio station in 1931. It is famous for being one of the very first stations to broadcast Kasey Casem's American Top 40 back in 1970. They are also known having legendary DJ Artie Woo Woo Ginsburg at the helm. They also broke the record Maggie May by Rod Stewart which was supposed to be the B side of Reason to Believe. They flipped the record and it became a monster #1 hit & catapulted Rod's career. WMEX was extremely popular in the 70's battling with WRKO for top position with their Top 40 format. Sadly it turned into an all talk format & other variations later on over the years, Now the WMEX THAT EVERYBODY LOVED IS BACK! They're playing the greatest songs of all time from the 50's, 60's, 70's & 80's If you Love Casey Kasem's Classic American Top 40 then you will Love Jeff Lawrence's Countdown. This guy is Unbelievable with all the detailed research he piles into each show. Jeff provides all kinds of information you probably have never heard of before about songs. Casey is Great as he counted down the Top 40 songs of the 70's & 80's as they appeared on the National Charts from Billboard magazine. Jeff does a slightly different take. He counts down the Top 25 songs in Boston from the 1960's & 70's. Jeff gives you inside info about some of your favorite tunes. Jeff also features Retro News - what was going on locally & nationally. There's also Retro Sports too with info about Sports Teams in their glory days. There's also Retro Commercials. Then he takes it one step beyond that & tells you what the price of gas, milk & eggs were at that time. What hip & trendy clothing was on sale at various department stores that no longer exist. Imagine gas for 29 cents, Hot Pants ( before Daisy Dukes) are on sale for women & Edwardian suits with flared pants for men. He tells you the price of an apartment & homes in various cities. He also tells you what Cartoons were popular on Saturday Mornings, TV Shows & what Movies were playing at the Drive-In. Jeff doesn't just play the music but gives you a living snapshot of what life was like Back in the Day. It feels like a time capsule & puts the music in perspective not just playing a song on the radio. Even if you didn't grow up in Boston , you will totally enjoy the show because of all the tid bits of info you never knew about records. It's upcycled from a recycle of yesterday for today. It's not your typical Old School show. Every weekend it's a different month week & year The same Show airs 4 different times on the weekends. Saturdays 9-11 AM Eastern Time 6-8 AM Pacific & 8-10 PM Eastern Time 5-7 PM Pacific Sundays 9-11 AM Eastern Time 6-8 AM Pacific & 5-7 PM Eastern Time 2-4 PM Pacific. WMEX broadcasts on 1510 AM in Boston & on 101.1 FM in Quincy & on the web @ wmexboston.com. They are also on your Tune In App or ask your smart speaker to play WMEX BOSTON. They are also selling Retro Merch on their Boston website too. I do have a minor recommendation for improvement for the show. Jeff talks a little fast because he's trying to cram all that into a 2 hour format. I wish they would expand the show to 3 hours & a little bit slower on the talking & expand to the Top 30 or 40. That would be PERFECT! It was a used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

These folks have the very best texts and tools for learning a foreign language I have ever…read moreencountered! Chinese is the fifth foreign language I have set out to learn. I started out taking an in person class at a local Japanese school, but found the instruction too unstructured. Most students had family members who already spoke Chinese. Not to be deterred, I sought out a textbook on my own. Started with Rosetta Stone but was dissatisfied. I ended up using Cheng &Tsui's Integrated Chinese program. The textbook has audio files for each important vocabulary and dialogue section and also includes a large chapter that helps one learn to create the vocal sounds that do not exist in English. Dialogues have extremely crisp and clear speakers, and dialogues are repeated 3 times at different speeds. All audio can be listened to over and over as you perfect your accent (I have gotten many complements on my accent!) This really helps as one learns to comprehend at more rapid pace. There are flash cards that link to each lesson, and a separate character book to help you learn to write. You also get to choose between traditional or simplified characters. I started with simplified, but then a native speaker I know talked me into traditional. Easy switch!, I have tried other instruction materials and textbooks. There is no comparison. This is a Best in Class set of materials not just for Chinese, but for foreign language learning in general! It has made it possible for me to learn Chinese all on my own. (There are also multiple levels in this program). Five plus stars Cheng &Tsui! And thank you! Chinese is the hardest language I have undertaken - even makes Japanese look like a walk in the park. You have given me the tools to be successful!

Personally, I love the vocabulary, Chinese sentence structure and grammar formation, and the cultural background at the end of every chapter where informative. Instruction is in English with Simplified Chinese characters of corresponding English translation, which is very important to me for having no prior exposure to enable me to learn. The cast of characters in the book brings humor to learning without dead air. This book is specifically targeted to ABC (American Born Chinese) and Westerners who are genuinely interested in learning Mandarin. Priced at the typical college textbook markup of $40.00 which does not include an audio CD.
