I see Spare Change News hawkers all over the city, every day. Recently, I picked one up and read it. *gasp!* I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the paper has some pretty interesting articles that are often better-written than some of those in big media newspapers. I didn't see any articles that pleaded and begged for money or anything. There was a great article on the New Bedford immigrant raid. Some interesting profiles and interviews. A friend said they read an interview with Noam Chomsky in one issue. This is a paper I'll probably be looking to keep up with. read more

Spare Change is actually a half-way decent paper going towards a good cause. All of the articles I believe are actually written by the homeless, and the paper itself is sold by the homeless (yes, the guys who apparently yell at bubba, though I think he may be referring to "Spare Change" Guy at Park Street, who I've never seen selling "Spare Change"). It deals with a variety of issues, both homeless and non-homeless. And while it might be a little steep at $1, that $1 is going towards work for the homeless, as long as you follow Allix's advice. I usually buy spare change from Joe, the guy outside of my work. I don't always read it (I drive in to work now, so no T to read it on) but the best part is that the people selling the paper buy it from spare change for 25 cents per paper and get to keep the rest. On the whole I don't give people change if they're just spanging (sp?) but these guys are at least working for it. ALSO- spare change just merged with Whats Up this month, so if you're into breakdancing and stuff you can get a dose of social conciousness with your bugaloo news! read more

Seeing the guy hawking the paper in Harvard Square always lightens my day a bit. I don't buy it nearly as often as I want to, because I'm offensively hypocritical, but at least I want to. The last time I did, I was really amused at some of the articles, most of which involved various allegations of political conspiracy against the homeless. Plus, people love when you use it as wrapping paper for holiday gifts. read more

The newspaper has changed their format and now have a new editor! The articles are insightful and descriptive. I highly recommend reading this paper. Their latest interviews include Cornel West, Danny Glover, and Barney Frank-- well known names on interesting topics. Also, this paper isn't your typical paper -- it also helps a great cause. The vendors are homeless or low-income people and keep commission from every paper that's sold. I think they've got a great product and a great cause, that's why I'll continue to support them. I get my paper from Gary near the Holocaust memorial on Congress St/Haymarket. He's a really friendly person with a sunny outlook, stop by and pick one up! read more

I buy this paper at least once a week from Mike at North Station. I think it is really respectable that the homeless are actualling WORKING to make $ and better themselves and not just sitting on a street corner with a paper cup asking for $. read more

I buy a Spare Change Newspaper whenever I can (which is whenever I happen to be carrying cash, sadly not often enough) from Gary at the corner of Congress and Hanover outside Haymarket Station. He's there nearly every morning, rain or shine or snow, always polite, cheerful and ready to chat, whether you're buying a paper or just passing by. As for the paper itself, it's insightful with good and wide-ranging articles, and best of all it helps the homeless. The seller buys the papers for .35 cents and retains all profits. It's the true definition of "feel-good" news. read more
