I *love* folk, and I love independent radio- so I should be an avid WUMB listener, but I'm not- and…read moreif they can't capture MY listenership, then who the heck is listening?! Let me start at the beginning- there's a lot I like about WUMB. They play a lot of indie singer-songwriters (and some established ones), and they're remained true to their folk roots. They are not overrun by corporate nonsense. The downside: WUMB feels REALLY old. I have no empirical evidence for this, but my gut is that the average age of listeners is somewhere in the 50-65 bracket. While I appreciate that they have remained faithful to the WUMB formula, and have refused to sell out (i.e. I hate the new WERS and really miss the days when ERS had actual SHOWS!), I also can't help but wonder if their staunch adherence to a very old formula isn't going to eventually kill the station. Why not have a few DJs who seem a bit younger? WHy not invite more community participation? They just seem like they need a bit of fresh air for the next decade...

Instead, listeners will find a ton of electronic and very alternative music - so alternative no one outside of the musicians and producers have ever heard of it - as well as weird leftist news, an occasional sporting event and Melody du Jour, of which not enough has yet been said or heard. ZBC's programming could be best described as 'eclectic,' and at times that doesn't begin to fully describe the range of obscure and weird stuff found at 90.3. Yet, in a single day involving a baseball game, some serious funk right out of a '70s movie and a 12 minute synthesizer solo around midnight, eclectic really can expand one's aural horizons. That's not a bad thing at all.

My child had been taking guitar lessons at Zumix, and while we initially had high hopes, our…read moreexperience was ultimately very disappointing. My son has a disorder and is on an IEP; school has always been challenging for him, and at times, his guitar lessons had to take a back seat so he could focus on his academic needs. This summer, he was required to attend summer school due to those challenges. We communicated this to Zumix and asked if he could take a temporary break from lessons. The response we received from Jennifer was disheartening: "We've had to offer your lesson time to one of the many students currently on our waitlist who are eager and ready to jump in." While I understand there is high demand, this response lacked any compassion or effort to find a solution. It sent a clear message: that my child, who has already faced so many obstacles, is easily replaceable. Instead of feeling like part of a community, we felt discarded. There was no flexibility, no outreach, and no sense that they cared about my child's journey or well-being. If your child has a disability or needs some grace and understanding, I would strongly urge you to proceed with caution. This experience was a painful reminder that not all youth organizations are equipped--or willing--to support children with unique needs.

After watching the 1st annual auction on NewTV we went to check out the studios. This is partly…read morebecause I was the auction winner on some cool things like car wash vouchers and a salon gift certificate. My boyfriend was the proud winner of a four foot long sub! So off we went to claim our winnings and what we found was a state of the art television and editing facility in our own backyard. We were so impressed that we have signed up for an orientation session so we can become volunteers and a yearly membership is only $20. That gives you access to cameras, microphones, editing suites and more. I guess I will have to brush up on my Final Cut Pro editing skills.
