Weston Bend State Park is a peaceful and beautiful spot located near the town of Weston, MO. The park is famous for its picturesque beauty, walking trails that winds through forests overlooking the Missouri River. I visited the park in winter last yr and fell in love with it. Primarily I just hiked around but I saw many people bird watching, and enjoying the quiet nature as well. The best part is the scenic overlook that gives a beautiful view of the river valley, especially at sunset. When I visited the park, it felt calm and less crowded. That definitely makes it a nice place for families or anyone who wants a break from busy life. My suggestion to everyone one is to hike at this park and then head to the town of Weston to enjoy some hot wine at Pritle Wineries followed by amazing food at the O'malleys pub. read more

Small park that nestles along the Missouri River. Trails for hiking and biking exist on the eastern side. You can also camp and picnic. If you hike along the West Ridge you will climb up to the ridge and come up to some overlooks that look into Kansas. The park was unmanned on Indigenous Peoples Day, but folks were able to access the park. If you have pets, the park has a small dog park at the front end. Plenty of benches can be found along the lower trails to take a load off. Right now the leaves are turning into their fall shades and the birds that come in the fall are arriving for the birders that are on the hunt. Plenty of information can be found at the trail head. There are clean bathrooms. The water fountains don't work, but the taps do. The weather today was awesome. I will return. read more

If you live in KC and is looking for a beautiful place to hike, go here. I love the outdoors. When I moved to KC, I was worried I wouldn't find a hiking place up to par. But I was wrong. If you do it right, you can get in a good 10 miles in easily. The trail is very easy to follow. And the beautiful fall foliage is totally worth it. Once you are done with hiking, you definitely should make a drive to Weston Downtown to check out the local restaurants and wineries. I love the historic buildings! read more

Quiet clean park, with great prices. Many amenities on site, and well cared for. Only thing keeping it from a fifth star was the attitude my friend, and another lady got from the camp host when they mistakenly drove the wrong way on the (not clearly marked) camping road. Personally, the interactions I had with the host and his wife were pleasant, and friendly. read more

Missed the amazing Fall hues, but it was still nice to visit & walk or hike the trails. I did a total of 5.28 miles between paved trails and nature ones. It was lovely out there despite the fact the vibrant fall foliage was more dull and tan or browns. Personally, I loved it. I'd definitely go again. I parked at the Tobacco Barn and took the paved trail to the upward path to the overlook. From there, I took a right on a nature path and followed the river some. I'd say this trail system was easy to moderate with some steeper parts--I did have a hiking pole so I'm glad for that part of it. At the hours ticked by, more people took themselves on the paths too; not too crowded though. read more

An incredibly fast, easy, and scenic drive from north Kansas City. The park is very welcoming, logistically, and also includes a dog park at the front. Once you drive in a bit, there are several trails to choose from, as well as an old tobacco barn, and a Missouri River lookout. Gonna be honest, the lookout is tranquil and lovely (and I met some great folks who were also sitting there) - however if you are expecting a grand sweeping majestic view of the river, this is not it! Also, while interesting geographically and if you're a military buff, the constant sound and sight of a helicopter from the nearby Army fort was a bit off-putting. The park was very quiet itself (helicopter notwithstanding) which is a pro and a con. I felt a little unsure of trying the trails by myself. Would have loved to check them out though, if I had been with a walking companion. Will definitely hope to return. read more

Wow! You must take a trip to Weston, Mo! The fall colors are amazing at the park. We stayed nearby at a glamping place but took a short drive to this park. It is so beautiful; the best fall colors in October. Then, the adorable Weston town has many retailers, restaurants, cafes, wineries, and more. Mostly small local business! read more

Awesome trail! There were a lot of people on a nice fall day. The parking lot was full but there are other parking spots in lots nearby. The trail stars off as paved and then you can step off into a more forest-y trail which is more my jam! There were lots of hills which was perfect for some exercise and when you get to the top, it is a beautiful overview of the river! We did about a 4 mile hike around the whole park. It was perfect. also dog friendly!!! read more

I love it here! Its the nicest spot in Wyandotte County. The drive around the lake is relaxing and beautiful. The trees are so gorgeous all year round, but especially now when they're starting to turn. There are many many trails in the woods, but they're not stroller friendly, and bring your hiking shoes! There are a lot of shelter areas, too, most of them have playground equipment of some kind but all of them have shelters with tables and grills. You can reserve them by calling the park. You can't camp here, sadly... or swim here.... There is a boat marina though. And you can fish here, and theres a special little section for kids to fish in. They used to hold tournaments and stuff for the kids. I don't know if they still do. The spillway by the dam is definitely worth the trek up and down the hill. Its how the lake keeps from flooding. All of the excess water goes down the spillway and runs off into a creek back behind the park. It gives me vertigo standing too close to it, so be careful. Theres a fence all the way around it for a reason! Trees and branches that float onto the lake get sucked down into the spillway and get stuck down there... There's a huge playground area for the kids thats been recently redone. There are things for kids of all ages to play on, and a mommy and me swing too. There are restrooms and parking right by the playground. We used to go across the street from the playground to feed the geese and ducks but be careful, they can get mean!! There are also lots of deer out here, so be careful when driving around the lake. The speed limit is only 20 MPH and the park rangers strictly enforce it. read more

Really fun hidden gem north of KC! Weston has a lot to offer and I just recently started exploring this park. It's perfect for hiking, taking in the views, and enjoying some fall weather. We stopped by for a picnic, and I'm only taking down one star because I feel like there could be more picnic areas at the park, but overall it's really great and certainly worth a visit if you're in the KC area! read more

Visiting Weston Bend is a great activity for social distancing! We checked it out for the first time today- the trails are fantastic! We hiked almost 5 miles around 3 different trails. We started with the paved trail, took the yellow trail up to the lookout and the blue trail back around to the paved trail. We arrived around 9 and saw very few people on the trail. We finished hiking around 11:30 and the parking lot was full. If you are trying to avoid people, I would suggest going earlier. read more

What a great adventure. I went over here for a scenic view hike. It was wonderful. This is a state park, it's a quick drive from Kansas City. There are a number of camping sites around plus a dog park for the dog lovers. If taking a a hike during the misty rain be mindful there is potential for slippery paths due to moss. We only camped here for one night and I wish we could have stayed longer! The campground was nice and had clean restrooms that were more updated than I expected. We had a site close to the camp host, which made checking in and getting a bundle of firewood easy upon arrival. Our site, #10, was great for our tent set up. There was a nice flat area under a shade tree right next to a pole where we could lock our bikes up. We didn't have time to set up camp and shop for dinner supplies before sundown so we grabbed some ribs and smoked chicken from a place in town only a few minutes away. This campground is everything I wanted for just passing through. If we're ever in the area again I'd definitely stop by for another visit. read more

This state park was very well kept. Wide trails and plenty of parking. Very dog friendly. Trails difficulty would be easy. Some hills and steps but mostly flat. The overlook is very popular on the weekend so plan to enjoy the view with strangers. Very close to Green Dirt which was perfect for lunch after the hike. read more

Nice little park with a nice campground and really nice hiking trails. We tent camp, so our favorite spot in the campground is #26, the only first-come first-serve non-electric site. It's one of the nicest in the park; near the restroom and isolated from the other sites. Plus, 2 or 3 nice grassy spots to place the tent. Our favorite trail is the West Ridge trail, a nice loop that provides a couple really nice views of the Missouri River and Fort Leavenworth. We haven't gone after the leaves fall off yet, but we look forward to the expanded views. read more

I had a wonderful time at Weston Bend State Park when I visited in early November! I took the West Ridge Trail (entrance/exit very near the overlook) pretty leisurely and got through it in a little less than an hour (even when stopping to take a few photos). It was a fun trail -- enough ups, down, and turns to keep it interesting! Overall, the park seemed clean and safe, and I'd definitely suggest spending part of the day there. I loved seeing how big the park is and I can't wait to go back and continue exploring. The only disappointment I have about it was that I think I missed the beautiful fall colored leaves by about two weeks. I had plans to go to Weston Bend for a good part of the fall but the Royals (fortunately) kept on winning so I kept pushing it back. I'll have to remember to go a little earlier next year! read more

This trail has great views over looking the Missouri River, the problem is the mosquitoes. I think it might of been the time of year, the first week of July, but still I really couldn't enjoy the trail due to the trailing of mosquitoes after me. The bike trail was paved and had several areas to hike off into that had overlooks. There is also a Tobacco barn that was blocked off due to construction, but you can still walk up to it. I want to go back later when there will be no mosquito and perhaps explore the downtown area of Weston. After being bitten by so many mosquitoes I really wasn't in the mood to go to any breweries, wineries, or distilleries. read more

Let me tell you about this place. As soon as a nice, 70 degree day comes along, I've been known to call in sick to work/school/life and head up to this park. Weston, MO is a fabulous town anyway but I would come to this park regardless. First, there is a GREAT 2.8 mile paved biking trail winding through this park not to mention 3 other non-paved trails. There's one main trail head for the paved trail but you can catch the unpaved trails at several places. Love hiking here. Love it. Love it. It's beautiful and oftentimes I'll hike for quite a while before I see anyone else. The park itself closes at dark. There is playground equipment for the kids and some vaulted toilets. The tobacco barn is quite the sight to behold and the lookout over the Missouri River is breathtaking and pretty accessible. As far as state parks, this one is not that huge. You can probably spend most of an afternoon and get a good time here in. I do budget at least 2 hours though. Who am I kidding, I would come all day if I could. There is a state camp ground at this park as well. There are a couple hike-in spots that aren't too far (quarter mile I think). I will say that the weekends fill up INCREDIBLY fast-- especially in the fall months. Weston does some great fall festivals and the camp ground isn't that large. You can reserve spots but they have to be two night stays you reserve them WAY in advance. This park is a great day trip or weekend jaunt from KC. And if you're into camping, this is a must try at least once in your life. read more

Great state park to visit in Missouri! It has some great trails to hike. The trails are paved and unpaved and vary in distance and challenge. There are really pretty overlooks to stop and look out over. The state park really gets to show off how beautiful Missouri is and has some historical points of interest found there. One of the great little points at Weston Bend State Park is the amount of parking available. There is plenty of parking for visitors to get outside during the pandemic, unlike other Misouri parks that really limit visitors and ticket heavily when parking is not available. There is plenty to enjoy here and can't wait to come back and camp. read more

The trails are nicely marked but have enough "nature" to keep it interesting. Behold! Nature: Unfolding in front of you! After 30+ years of fighting it, this year I finally succumbed to fall foliage mania, and seeing how this past week seems to be that sweet spot where all of the trees are at their most fiery brilliant, I wanted to get outside, and pronto. I snagged up the husband, a friend and my dog and set out to Weston Bend State Park for an afternoon of hiking. It was everything that I was hoping for. First of all, if you're coming from KC, even the drive here is beautiful. I highly suggest taking the "scenic route" through Parkville and a couple of tiny communities. It only adds a few minutes, and it sets the tone. We drove straight to the lookout point, but passed an interesting tobacco barn that I'd like to check out on our next visit. It seems like this is a fairly large park that would take multiple visits to properly explore. Once we got to the lookout point, it was truly a lovely site. Overlooking a valley bisected by the missouri river, farmland and forests spread out in front of us, displaying the brilliant colors of the season. It's a great photo op, and a pretty dang wholesome activity for a lot of families and people in love to take advantage. We didn't stick around, b/c it was time for our hike. The unpaved trails make a loop that I estimate at about 3 miles. It has some hills and somewhat steep inclines, but I think it you're a remotely healthy person with the use of both their legs that you should be OK. There will be plenty of people on the trail, so don't expect a TON of privacy, but everybody is incredibly friendly, all just happy to be outside and soaking in the experience. One last thing: While we saw no wild turkeys on this particular occasion, we have been told that they are in fact a regular site. That's gotta count for something, right? read more

Camped here for the 4th of July, and LOVED it. Even my boyfriend, who usually camps in really secluded areas, loved it. We were in campsite #3, which is right at the beginning of the loop near the entrance and the bathrooms. Even though it's near that, though, it was surrounded by trees on three sides and felt very secluded. We drove around the loop and it seemed like a few of the sites were more secluded than others, with the RV sites at the back of the loop being the least. Even though this place isn't super far out there, it FEELS like it! We were only there for two nights, but had a great time. We hiked the Harpst trail, which is 2.25 miles, and was absolutely gorgeous. You really can see beautiful views of the Missouri river, mostly from one particular spot on the trail - the rest is seen through trees. Be aware that although it's only a few miles, you go downhill quite a ways and have to hike back up. It was great fun though, and a good hike. We went around the loop so that we joined up with the paved bike trail at the end of our hike, but even though that was paved it was still beautiful and secluded. Also, lots of up and down hills. I imagine it would be a pretty challenging bike ride! We only ran into a couple other hikers on our way through, mostly people just setting out right as we were hiking back in. Also note: we drove to the trailhead (at the overlook), and were SUPER glad we did. Each campsite has a little grill that doubles as a fire pit, that they clean out between each visitor. They also have picnic tables, but we moved ours over so my dogs could have plenty of space to run around on their leads. We were very comfortable in our site. My boyfriend said it would have been nice if the campsite across the way wasn't DIRECTLY across the road, but we were each set far back enough that it wasn't like we were staring at each other. :) My dog loved chasing the butterflies and finding sticks to chew on. Also something I noticed: they have really nice bathrooms. REALLY nice. Everything is clean and dry and well-lit. I didn't use their showers while there, but they looked really nice as well. Although I heard one woman complaining about the water not getting hot, her friend in the next stall said it was and was trying to explain how to make it hot. I think that one was user error.. I would DEFINITELY come back here. There's a farmer's market and gas station a ways down the road in case you run out of anything or need more beer like us. :) The park has a couple day-use areas that would be nice to hang out and BBQ and go hiking too, even if you aren't camping! read more

This park is a quick drive from KC. We went in the late afternoon in August. We did a 2 min hike to a viewpoint and saw the Missouri river. It is a great spot to bring a book and read or just come and relax and watch the world pass you by. When your done enjoying nature, you can stop by the town of Weston. It is a really cute place with lots of antique shops,an old fashioned candy and ice cream shop and some restaurants. read more

This is a great place to visit on a nice day. We normally come here once year to attend the "Wings Over Weston" bird festival. It's a great festival to visit with the family if you get the chance! We've walked the trails in the park while doing some bird watching. The trails are beautiful and a great place to add some birds to your spotting list. Go here frequently to hike and bike. Sometimes camp. Around a three Mile hike with many hills and some great views inside the park. Along the river it is around a five mile very flat trail. Partially paved. Great for biking. For camping there are great clean restrooms with shower facilities. Don't forget the bug spray! read more

This is a great park and camping area and I have been back several times. Quiet, well mantained and safe. I would even feel perfectly comfortable camping alone. The trails are lovely, bathrooms are pretty clean, and the showers are private & spacious... this coming from a clean freak. Just be sure to take shower flip flops. :) The only downfall of the park (and the park is not to blame) is that I always get the dang super-itchy chigger bugs when I camp here. Take lots of bug spray and maybe you will do a little better. I'm from the upper Midwest, where these pesky varmints don't live, so maybe it's just part of life "down here.") read more

I completely adore this park! We just went today and enjoyed the full almost 3 mile paved trail. Unfortunately it was much too muddy to hike any of the trails that led off into wooded areas and really explore. Our husky pup duo couldn't get enough it seemed. With all the steep inclines, it put them right to sleep on the car ride home. I'll admit... I'm in somewhat decent shape but sit at a desk and the uphill bits actually had me a little winded! I'm definitely looking forward to coming back and doing some camping! My only tiff about Weston Bend is that it needs to be repaved sooner rather than later. It would really vamp it up! Great for a fall hike! Granted it's an leisurely hike, not much in the steep hill department but just a beautiful morning.
