I had a decent recent experience stopping at this western beef while going into Jersey through Staten Island. It was clean, there were lots of things and it was later in the evening so it was not really populated. Prices were a bit high, but not outrageous for the NYC metropolitan area, but definitely high for the surrounding area. Staff seemed to be doing their jobs. Place was organized and clean. Meat section was VERY organized. Many counters including Deli were closed when I got there. Pre-cut meat is an option when that happens. read more

They have a decent selection of food, you just have to make sure you check the expiration dates, the service could be good or it could be not so good depending on the day. read more

The store is very large, with an extremely extensive meat section and a wide selection of products. There is also a very large parking lot, which makes shopping convenient. read more

One of the priciest supermarkets in the island, but what can you do. That's the closest one near my house . They are pretty organized, most of the time clean . Workers are always very helpful, which I appreciate the most . Still wish the prices were little cheaper ! Most of the time I get stuff on sale & what can I say ! You gotta do what you gotta do, our income isn't getting higher ...! I forgot to mention that they need to higher more cashiers & most of the time they are not that nice . Maybe because they are always busy & tired ! Lines get pretty busy all day long , so if they had more help they will be more relaxed! read more

Way over-priced prices are ridiculously high compared with other supermarkets around the same area.

CUSTOMERS ‼PLEASE READ THE DUE DATES‼ Majority of the food sold here is expired or due to expire within 2-3 days. Bread is fully restocked, yet most is either expired TODAY or expired in 2. Yall trying to poison the customers thats supporting yall business. And Its kept dirty in there anyway, rats & roaches skittering on the floor are uncommon. Good cashiers are a hit or miss. read more

Service is horrible. Spanish lady cashier talking constantly with her coworkers making mistakes. I asked her to please take seriously because I was in a rush and she laughed and kept talking to her coworkers. Attitude of service here seems very self serving and not aimed towards customers at all. Food selection is good but customer service is not! read more

I went to WB's Produce section to get some ingredients for a salad. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a rat the size of 7 or 8 month cat. I realize this is New York and we have a serious rat problem but should we see them in our Supermarkets? When I told the staff they showed no interest in my concern. I won't be going back EVER read more

This is my go to spot for meats, their quality surpasses my local Stop n' Shop. However they really need to do something about pest control. Sunday I went to do a quick shopping for meats and other items. Sometimes going to multiple supermarkets can be exhausting and time consuming. I'll remain sticking to that tiring option. I checked the dates on hamburger and hot dog bread and tossed it in my cart, but while on the checkout line I noticed either a mouse or rat had chewed through the bag. Gross. The person behind me noticed what I saw and looked at their bag of potatoes. Again chewed through by mice or rats. I would steer clear of their food, and other items out in the open in store. I'm not sure if critters can survive in their meat room, and I sure hope not since I love getting my meats there. But for the love of food, get some serious pest control. read more

Western Beef started as a discount supermarket. It is now easily the most overpriced chain I know of in the truck-state area. A simple comparison of a random sampling of goods, from Ketchup to canned goods to their laughingly expensive USDA " Inspected" beef-the lowest level on the beef rating scale-it is mind boggling that they remain in business. I have to admit that I do go there for hard to find ingredients needed for various national cuisines-pan Caribbean, African, a few Southern specialties. But they are ripping off their customers, many of whom understandably have Western Beef fixed in their minds as the discounter it once was. $4.99:lb. For bean sprouts? $4.00 for Pullsbury biscuits that are $1.59 at Key Food? You decide. Their prices for primal beef cuts are almost always much higher than the prices for trimmed cuts from that primal a half a mile away at ShopRite. Save your money, and only go to Western Beef for things like palm oil or Scotch Bonnet peppers. read more

I grew up shopping at Western Beef and their prices on all items were usually very fair, but now it seems like they are overpriced on many items compared to ShopRite, Stop and Shop and many others. Now I only go to western beef when I'm having a bbq or get together to buy meat in bulk and also when I run out of sofrito. Western beef is usually the only place I find everything I need for the sofrito like the ajecitos. Finding a shopping cart in their parking lot is a challenge and there are a lot of shady people hanging around outside and also inside the store. Im starting to think I may need to start buying my bulk meat at Costco and go to Brooklyn to buy my ingredients for the sofrito especially after reading reviews on here where people noticed their bread had been half eaten by mice or rats. Actually I won't be back! read more

Ridiculous place to shop for food. You can't even get a cart to place groceries in. Look at the pictures as carts are strewn around the lot & no one is bothering to keep them available. If you find a cart, its normally dirty or not working. It's a shame as its decently stocked & probably up to code. read more

Their meat department is hideous, it should he called "Ghetto Beef" and they should get a violation. see attached pictures for proof. Meat packs are just sitting in bloody water for hours, every single pack of meat that I picked up there's a huge pool of blood inside to the point that it's dripping out the back the whole package is just slimy and stinks to even touch. I called up to file a complaint and I got the nastiest receptionist before I even said I was going to complain. They really need to clean up their act, stop hiring receptionist who dropped out of high school and clean up their store. I expect the shame generic response that everybody typically gets on here, we all know that it's bullshiting you won't change anything. This is a warning for everybody else because Western Beef is doing our community a huge disservice by selling this meat. If you value your family's health I will go anywhere else. read more

This review is based on two different purposes for this place. One, if you are so hot that sweat is pouring off your forehead and all you see is imaginary oasis, then you need to visit this place. Just head to the back, through the white doors and just chill. The whole back section is literally a freezer and you get to walk through. I often send my menopausal mother there to save on the electric bill. Of course everything comes with a price. The price is here is the painful odor of hundreds of pounds of raw meat. Even holding your nose will not help. The second purpose for this place is that it is actually a supermarket. The freezer part has all kinds of meats (although not the best finest quality and sometimes you do run into "green" meat). The fruits and vegetables are same day type (meaning you need to eat them that day or the next) because they will not last that long. Even though the quality is not that great, they are more popular for their prices. They do have a fish section but it is small. I think one of the best qualities of the place is that it is very ethnically diverse, especially in the latin persuasion, and you can find ingredients and groceries from all kinds of regions. They also have an amazing bakery and cook bread daily. You need to get their early to get the bread when it first comes out of the oven and before the children start grabbing at it with their hands. If you get their early early, like 7:30, you can still get them pipping hot. They also make their own cookies. I think going to Western Beef is an experience of it's own and everyone should try it at least once. read more

This place is a nightmare. There's always some sort of solicitation going on, the DVD guy, a guy asking for money or their "security" looking to check bags. Who has a bag check at a supermarket?! Now all over the supermarket are bright yellow-ish orange cards advertising sale prices but be very weary and vigilant when you get to the registers, that is, if you every get to them. The lines are always miles long and they only have 2 cashiers. Now all those things you grabbed because they were on sale.... scan for regular price or a couple pennies extra than the "sale" price and it may only be a few cents but how many people are being charged a few cents extra everyday. They're robbing the consumer blind. Stinks that I have to shop there because it's the only place I can score my Hispanic goods I need. Thank goodness I really only need to visit during the holidays. read more

I have been coming to this place for years because it's convenient to my house and the bread is delicious but, when the person who makes the bread is rude it's not acceptable. My mom ask this guy for plastic bags to grab the bread because there are no utensils and this ass thinks it's ok to raise his voice at her and be rude is not ok. Luckily I wasn't there otherwise I would have asked to speak to a manager. So disappointed.. read more

This is a supermarket, with a concentration of meats and latin food products. It's humongous and selections are varied.. just like your average market. I don't think they're prices are inexpensive, Shoprite down the street is much more reasonable. But surprise surprise, the bakery sells red velvet cupcakes by the four pack. Umm.. so of course I had to try. They weren't bad, and I'm sure when had fresh they would be much better. They're large in size, the frosting sweet and cream cheesy, cake dense and tasty, the color red. Ok job, for a supermarket chain. read more

Worst store ever. I came to pick up some ingredients. When I went into the store, I forgot to put my lego bag in the car because I just came from the lego store. Line Management probably the worst in all of Staten Island. Big and bountiful selection of many many categories. Produce, meat, ethnic groups even bread. Too bad I have walked in and out of the store more often then actually purchasing items. Including tonight. One line 8-10 deep for carts and one line at least 12 deep for 15 items or less. Terrible and very often here. Parking lot somewhat empty but it may as well be packed. Speaking of baskets, there is supposedly 4 or 5 for the entire store so the front doir guard tells me. I try often enough since I am in this area frequently. I may not try again. Hey management, go visit Metfood on Victory Blvd any time, any day to see how to manage a supermarket. Quite impressive. read more

Get ready to spend the rest of your day in line. Even if you use the so called "express lane." It'll be faster for you to take the bus a mile down to shoprite, get your groceries, go home and cook dinner than get through checkout at Western Beef. If you are unfortunate enough to go into this dump of a store you'll see 2 "express lanes", 1-2 regular lanes open and about 7 cashiers and 2 supervisors standing at the second last register doing absolutely nothing even though there's about 50 people in line. read more

Really meh supermarket. The place is ALWAYS a mess compared to all the other supermarkets on the entire island. The place stinks sometimes too and some of the cashiers can be really immature sometimes and argue alot, which holds up the lines. The only reason why I ever come in here is for a quick drink or snack. I like the yogurt smoothie drinks that they have, which alot of other places don't sell, however aside from that there are many other better supermarkets. Alot of their items are also overpriced compared to other places. read more

I was throwing a memorial day party at my house a few weeks back and wanted to roast a whole pig. I purchased one at Western Beef. When I got Home a prepared it for defrosting. When it defrosted it smelled like death. I returned it and they gave me another one which was deforested already. This time I sniffed it there and it too was rotten. I goes u can make your own minds up from my experience read more

Good value, not a typical supermarket though, cant make this the only place you go but sometimes some items are a great value, always find something to buy, meats and seafood sometimes much better and much cheaper than the big box markets, operative word SOMETIMES go here first before heading to the big three you might save some money, example I went to a local supermarket for live Lobster and though the price for two was high, went to Western beef and got three for ten dollars less read more

I've gotten meat here twice thinking that it will be good since they have a large meat department. But BOTH times the meat were stale even when it was bought few days before the best before date marked on package. Another $20 wasted. Also the line to pay is always long with few cashiers. And forget about returning you could be waiting for an hour before someone at customer service shows up. Never again. read more

I went shopping last May 2019.Just when I had finished paying for my groceries,I walked away from the cashier.WhenI got to my car,my wallet was missing.I requested to see the video footage and they refused to show me.Guess what,aI,m no longer a customer read more

If i could give this place zero stars i would. From the min you step in front of the store it smells like weed and all you hear is people cursing up a storm. They use this place as a hang out and you have a guy trying to sell you movies. You go in and the staff is unprofessional and the place is dirty! You have meat on the shelves and can goods in the freezer. You ask staff for help and they look at you like you are bothering them. HELP THIS PLACE ! read more

Lines, lines, and more lines. The biggest problem for this supermarket is that they do not have enough cashiers. This is probably the last time I will come here. We live in the 21st century and we still have to wait on line to pay for groceries. It takes me longer to pay than to pick my groceries. AMAZING! Amazon, Pa Pod, delivery services. Now I understand. Time for a change. We live in a digital world now and we are still living in the 1990's when it comes to getting groceries. read more

The place is awesome... I mean its not the best supermarket but the prices are amazing I recently bought ten pounds of chicken drumsticks for twenty bucks...the have there own meat station room... The coldest part of the supermarket...colder then the frozen Section... The room is full of frozen meats...and there product looks wonderfully...there wide variety of meats...they have amazing huge sales weekly... Some stuff are even cheaper then path mark, shop rite and stop and shop.... Not the biggest supermarket but has you daily needs... Very interesting store... There is a good amount of shoppers and staff working there...the lines to wait for check out is not long at all fast and convent service... What i dislike about this store is they lack certain items and there's always this weird funky smell inside and out of the store... Huge parking lot for a small store so don't worry about parking at all! read more

Can I give this place 0 stars? I really hope cooperate or management or whatever sees this cause this is by far the worst supermarket I've ever been to. They need to change a lot of things. I've been to this place a few times since it's right next door to planet fitness. Sometimes I'll buy yogurt from here right after my workout. But each and every time I go in here I'm just disgusted... The smell of this supermarket is just toxic. DISGUSTING, makes me want to throw up. Prob last time I'll ever go there. Shop rite is so much better! Besides the place smelling horrid, the supermarket is a mess... The workers are RUDE AND SHAMELESS. Never have I ever met supermarket employees as rude as the ones that work here. There are clearly no rules for the people working here. They do whatever they want and say whatever they want. They are no help at all! I asked an employee where the baby carrots were and he starts speaking to his friend next to him in their language and theyre just having their own conversation. When they do show me where the carrots were I looked at the packages and they were all EXPIRED! This place needs to straighten up. As I walked down another aisle I see another employee whist talking on her phone while pretending she was fixing items on the shelf! This place is just nasty. Ew. read more

well, it happened AGAIN! it seems that the cashiers at WB are not trained to pack your canvas grocery bags. i asked the cashier if she would pack my order in my canvas bags. when she finished ringing the order, she stated the total and stood there. i asked if she was going to help pack and she said "that's not written anywhere." after a while the situation got very heated with her ranting "i'm gonna break" "i'm gonna go off" threats? from a cashier? for calling the manager to clarify? will not return until they get with the program. everyone else is so nice. the manager Izzy couldn't be more apologetic. he offered to fire the dope, but i told him it's actually his fault. just train them to do the right thing...soon it will become law. LONG overdue NY! let's try to help the environment and save the stores some money in plastic bags!! read more

A previous reviewer got it right: this place is ghetto! Customer service is non-existent. I wasn't allowed to bring in my reusable bags because all bags must be checked in. Additionally, when I had a problem because I wasn't charged the correct amount for something I purchased, the "manager" treated me as if I was just lying and no apology was issued. The only reason I shop here a couple of times a year is because they carry items I haven't been able to find anywhere else. read more
