Great Asian market especially for Chinese food/ingredients! If you don't speak the language it might be hard to ask for help looking for things, but the staff tries. Large Asian grocery store catering to mainly Asian customers. As you enter you are hit with a STRONG smell of fish, an instant indication that the fish here is NOT fresh! The way the fish is laid out on stands mostly without ice will deter most customers. Had bad experience with fish bought here few times.. even my freezer smelled for weeks!! Meat section does better with fresh cuts. Hardly anyone speak English. Sadly enough the fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables are not fresh or of inferior quality compared to other vegetable/fruit markets such as HMart or other supermarkets' produce, and comparatively priced high. Basically OK for groceries and dry goods etc. There are better stores for quality and value for your dollar! read more

10 out of 5 stars. HL Supermarket is much bigger than the Asian Food Market that opened up a few months ago. This supermarket is about the same size as iFresh Market in 8th Ave Brooklyn but with a much larger selection (more seafood items, more Japanese and Korean products, more Asian snacks, etc.) and a massive parking lot (a small one in the "back" of the market, and a much larger one in the "front"). It is missing roasted meats however (not a huge fan personally, but would be a plus if they added some to the shop making this an 11 out of 5 star supermarket). I'm happy this supermarket opened so close to home especially after just experiencing many Asian snacks during a trip to Japan. Looking forward to coming back! read more

I'm sorry but this place isn't for me. As soon as you walk in there's that overwhelming fish smell. I walked about 50 ft in and saw these tanks with about 100 fish swimming in a 2 ft long tank - abandoned my shopping cart and ran out. I'd rather spend more $ on my crabs than pick from a giant open box of them crawling around. Yikes !! read more

Been here many times to buy shell fish. But found out that it is best NOT to buy from the front counter, but to get things fresh from the rear tanks. Unfortunately, some of the fish mongers won't allow you to buy the fish or the crabs from the tank. And they get very nasty about it. They just lost my business. They should be happy to sell you whatever you ask for. But maybe, because I am not Asian, they feel as if they can be rude and arrogant. read more

Personally I like this super market. The parking and language barrier can be a bit of a problem at times but still a nice place to shop. I really enjoy the seafood and produce department. I haven't brought alot of meat there but the meat I did by which was goat, duck and chicken was very good. I also really like the fresh duck eggs read more

We stopped by here on Saturday to check out the supermarket. The supermarket opened recently but we have never been before. The entrance is in the back and doesn't face Hylan. The supermarket had tons of free parking available. Upon entry, there is a huge fish and seafood section. I saw turtles, eels, shrimp, crab, and squid on offer. They had tons of variety of everything and the aisles were wide enough to accommodate people going up and down the aisles without much maneuvering. The prices were a bit expensive, they did have some promotions available. They had tons of available cashiers and they went quick. The two things that concern me is that: there was a person following us around even my oblivious mother noticed but once we went to the cashier, they stopped following us and another is that an Asian person was stealing and no one seemed to care but we got followed around. I am not sure if this person is part of the staff but he did a terrible job of making it discreet that he was behind us for most of the shopping trip. read more

Pretty new and seems well stocked with lots of Asian goodies. Interactions with the cashiers have been positive and they were helpful. However the meat/fish department is lacking in proficient english speaking personnel... saw some potential customers being left with no assistance. Parking can be tight in the back and customers definitely need to learn how to drive/park, but not the supermarket's fault. read more

We wanted very badly to love this supermarket but the prices are 3x what we pay in Brooklyn. And several times, we brought fruits from here but when we cut them open after we got home, the fruit was already rotten on the inside. Please do better. HL Supermarket is a great addition to Staten Island. I'm so happy that I don't have to go to Brooklyn for great Chinese vegetables and fish. Some people aren't too happy about the fish being in the entrance of the store, but I am from Florida and grew up with a fishing pole in my hand, so I just love the smell of fish of all kinds. I like the fact that you can pick out the fish you want and they will clean it for you. The selection of vegetables and fruits is outstanding. I actually went there with a Chinese friend and she helped to explain to me what some of the vegetables are and how to prepare them. That was really helpful. HL is now a major part of my grocery shopping in Staten Island. read more

Today at the Checkout counter, the cashier was rude, in that she rushed me for no apparent reason (no one was behind me or waiting). Then when I asked for help with my heavy bags to my car (2 large heavy bags), I was ignored till I went to the manager with the request. Mature adults need to be treated with more respect! I am not used to this, and I find that type of behavior totally unacceptable. read more

Well lit and full of all the Chinese specialties. We bought some clams and when my wife asked them to open them up the fishmonger dismissively said "No". His loss on the generous tip we usually give. I could not find any pet food. Also my wife asked to use the restroom. Another wonderful employee looked at her strange and said no. This is the best Asian supermarket in Staten Island. Variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood etc.... We used to go to NJ, Brooklyn or Manhattan but now we do not need to go. We wish HL supermarket will sell bakery items, BBQ, roast duck, steam chicken, roast pork etc..... Visited this new market once. Very crowded. Parking is hit and miss. Many people with carts in the parking lot along with cars moving in and out is an accident waiting to happen. The store is large and well lit. I will update my review once I have a chance to shop there when it is not as busy. By the way, why don't to have a circular showing your weekly specials? HL supermarket is one of the best Asian supermarkets near me it is the fastest place to go get an Asian snack if you like it I love it so much there's so many good items and it is very worthwhile there are fresh fish there are fresh shrimp everything is very natural and the Ramen especially it's very good but I don't recommend the Ramen that doesn't have natural flavors because it doesn't add so much but other than that the place is amazing the dragon fruit the fruits are so cool I love all of them the Boba there is amazing me and my grandmother went to it and it is literally the best place my grandma loved the shrimps she loved all the fruit and they have the cutest Popsicles ice cream they have Boba it's so cute I definitely recommend going there because it is the best I just can't explain how good it is like since it is very good I'm going back there every day with my mom and today I'm going with my grandma again thank you so much and I really like the supermarket make sure to go read more

The 2 biggest offerings here are the fresh seafood and the produce departments. The only problem we've encountered is the lack of any system to get service at the seafood area. It seems like you just have to get lucky to catch someone's attention when you think it's your turn to be served. Other than that, the store has an abundance of interesting and mysterious items that makes a trip here something of an adventure. Especially if you're non-Asian you might get alarmed at some things that are apparently eaten by various cultures. Nevertheless, I'm quite happy with all the abundance of choices for fresh fruits and vegetables as well as condiments, sauces, and seasonings for a variety of Asian dishes. Checking-out goes quickly because it looks like they have plenty of experienced cashiers who work fast. I appreciate that they have up-to-date scanners and screens angled towards the customers so you can see the price being rung up for each item. So far, after having shopped here several times already, the only thing this store lacks is any type of fresh baked goods. If you want any type of pastries or breads or savory buns, etc. you're not going to find any here. That means making a trip all the way to Forest Avenue to the other Asian supermarket which has a large bakery department right in the front of the store. read more
