I couldn't emphasize enough how much I love this place. What more could you ask for from your local…read moreneighbourhood bar??? It is very un-assuming from the outside but once you come in, it's a huge area for your activities. The shuffleboard and darts are free. The pool and the snooker tables are 50 cents a game. Not too bad for Vancouver if you ask me. They are well-kept, too! There's a good mix of demographics here too - not just servicemen. University students and alumni from UBC come and hang out here, too. The jukebox is always playing. Bands play on Wednesdays and weekends. It could get soooo packed especially if the band playing has a following. Servers are sooooo accommodating that they've actually become my friends! Regulars are very welcoming, too! And the drinks! The drinks are cheap! Like c'mon.. $4 for single highballs, $9 for double Glenfiddich, $5 for beers! The pour on cocktails is also very generous. Lastly, you and your friends will be undisturbed here. You guys can even show up in costume and they would think it's cool! You can also order pizza or bring a cheeseboard for all they care. It's a nice lil space for hanging out. And you could actually hear each other talk here :)

They have pool tables, darts, shuffleboard and a great group of people who are fun to be around and could use some younger members. I should hang around here more often....

Want a review on the gym aka fitness centre? Here it is…read more As far as a gym goes? Hands down, no questions asked, top 5 worst gyms I have ever been to in my life. And I been to gyms in 3rd world countries like Laos and Cambodia. What's a good comparison to this gym? It's like a hotel gym but worse. This gym is very very small. If you actually lift bro, you won't last in this gym. It totally makes sense why you can only book 1 hour and max of 20 people, because if there were 20 people in there, there would be no space left to workout, it's really that small. There's no equipment in this gym, it gives you the bare basic amount of gym equipment to call it a gym, there's like 5 treadmills, 1 stairmaster, a couple bo-flex apparatuses. There's some free weights and some squat racks. But yea this gym is pretty bad in terms of what you have to workout with. If you pay for a community center membership for about $500 a year, you would be bored within a month due to the lack of size lack of equipment. I came without my phone because being on your phone is a huge distraction at the gym, even having ear pods in, you're not gonna totally focus on your workout. Kind of a bad idea because there is NO music whatsoever here. It's deadly quiet. Even the people that lift, the noises of people exercising is quiet, top 5 quietest gyms. Being new to Vancouver, I liked the thought of a "community center" where ppl in the community can get ripped together, but there is none of that in this gym. Definitely a 1 star gym, gonna give it a 2 star reviews, because the center probably does good things for the community, the staff here is friendly, I saw some kids workin out downstairs. Yea you couldn't pay me to workout here again yall. Keepin it real as always

This community centre is very responsive to the neighbourhood…read more The kid's gym class has been going for years; I am certain that kids of kids are now attending and learning whole body movement. Ballet for all levels from toddler to adult. Line dancing for those who line dance. The library, while small, is well-run and with the floor to ceiling windows, is bright even on a rainy Vancouver day. Important sporting events are shown on the tv in the lobby, popular cartoons at other times. The gym is small, but well-equipped for an average to high workout. It is not a gang-banger hang-out. The gym is definitely inclusive; some folks are there with their gym buddies, others devise a circuit work out, others engage a personal trainer. Currently paper towels are used for wipe downs- I bring my own cloth and toss it in the laundry with my gym clothes. Front desk staff are mainly pleasant; they deal with a diverse clientele and seem to manage well. Focus on "community" and you will have an enjoyable experience at Mount Pleasant Community Centre. Located at 1 Kingsway, across from Gene coffee, parking is a disaster, bus 3, 9, 8, 99 are close by.

I love languages, and at UBC, I took a Swedish course. I fell in love with the language (I also had…read morean awesome teacher, which played a big role in loving Swedish so much), so when I graduated from UBC, I wanted to continue studying Swedish. Unfortunately I was only able to complete one year of Swedish due to the timing of my graduation, and I couldn't take the second year Swedish class after I graduated because the course was only offered during the day, which interfered with having to work. However, I found out that Swedish (and the other Nordic languages) was offered at the Scandinavian Community Center, and took some classes over the years. The teacher was nice, but the quality of the instruction was nothing compared to UBC. But it was definitely better than nothing, and the price was very reasonable. The last time I took lessons at the Scandinavian Community Center was years ago, probably 2013. I'd love to take more lessons, but taking transit there is a nightmare. The community center is in the middle of nowhere, and there are two busses you can take from Metrotown Station, the #110 and #144 buses. The bus ride is quite long, 20 to 30 minutes (because they take these meandering routes), the timing is such that they arrive way before the class starts or minutes after it starts, and the two buses leave Metrotown within minutes of each other, so you miss one, and you miss both. And in the evening, the timing doesn't align with the class's end time, so you either have to leave class early or wait for half an hour in the dark, at an unlit bus stop, that's just a bus stop sign stuck in a ditch on the side of a super busy highway. Perhaps things are different than when I took lessons, but back then, to walk to and from the bus stop to the center (which was at night, as the class starts at 7pm and ends at 9pm), there was no sidewalk so you had to walk on the side of a busy highway and hope a car didn't hit you. It was particularly terrifying when it was pitch black (there was no lighting) and raining. I'd love to give the Scandinavian Community Center more stars, and I'd love to take more Swedish lessons, but the location is horrible and not reasonably transit accessible, and the instruction is only so-so, so not worth it for me to make the trek.

Today I attended a German Meetup.com group function here…read more Sadly this location offers little shade in the amazingly awesome day we had, so sommerfest attendees were left to their own devices with very limited seating and poor bathroom markage. Needless to say the beergarden setup was akin to a cakewalk game.
