yesterday I was at the rec center for some therapy. I use…read morethe steam room, hot tubs and therapy pool. I also do rehab on my shoulder in the tiny lap pool. I was in the steam room and two guys came in. One was 'training for a fight' and had to lose 5lbs in a day and made sure everyone in there knew about this. These guys started barking orders at people, and talking at people, that didn't want to be spoken to. I asked them to please be quiet in the steam room because the staff never did anything about it. At first I asked the lifeguards (3 different ones) to get a handle of the situation. They didn't. So when I asked these young men to please be quiet. I got an earful of insults. "why are you such a c.. " " you miserable human being" " when was the last time someone .... you good" "you must be depressed, you should just die" and the list goes on.. (the irony is I am clinically depressed, and this is not what I need at a community rec center) Not one single staff member or lifeguard took control of this. I left there.. more miserable than I did walking in. This is a facility for therapy, this is a facility for family and kids. This is a place for people to come and relax, and you know. rehabilitate.. it's what it's meant for. This is not a place for professional trainers to come to and start barking orders at other patrons to follow suit to his needs I am completely turned off at how the staff handled this, and that excessive talking and loud mouths are even ALLOWED to be acting like that in a steam room, or just act like that at the facility. I didn't come here to listen to your life problems. Not only that I was insulted over and over again until I had to remove myself from the situation. So I never got to do my physical therapy I am required to do right now for my shoulder. IF the guy was trying to lose 5 lbs in one way for a fight. This to me sounds like a personal problem, and someone didn't do their proper training. Instead we all got stressed out by this guy that wouldn't shut up about himself and his needs the entire time. He's probably not going to do well on that fight either. You can't lose 5 lbs in a steam room in one day. I might never come here again and take the longer journey to west van rec center just to avoid this awful experience/feeling and the fact that the staff doesn't do anything about this reckless behaviour.

NVR should be ashamed of themselves for bleeding parents for more money. One mom spent over $100 to have their child splash in the tot pool while waiting for their brother. Shame on you north van rec. for being utter bone heads over a kids splashing for 30 minutes. Bring your wallet to north van pools where common sense does not exist.

My sister and I went on a short trip and wanted to make sure we stayed in shape while away from home. We came in fully expecting to pay a few bucks for day passes but we were pleasantly surprised with a free pair of 12 day passes! The gym itself had three full squat racks. THREE! My sister and I had no problem finding a free rack. And of course it had all the other things typical to a gym-- free weights machines etc etc. But what did it for me was the full kettlebell set! I love kettlebells and was ecstatic to be able to do my kettlebell exercises at the YMCA as well. After our workout, we had yummy protein shakes as recovery drinks. Perfect end to a great gym session. I recommend this gym to anyone who's going to be visiting downtown Vancouver for any amount of time.

The facility itself for the gym is great because there are a lot of machines you can use as well as good selection of classes to access as well depending on your needs and preference of working out. And for those parents that needed some socialising time could come by the family development centre to either be there with their kids for the programs or drop them off for child minding if they needed to use the gym.

The gym is decent but the weight section seems jam packed full of equipment, which makes it difficult to move around and such when it's busy. The staff and trainers were all just kind of hanging out talking to each other but still helpful (A trainer came to help me when he noticed me staring at a machine with a confused look on my face and he didn't even make me feel stupid because I didn't know how to use it!) Standard sign up sheets for cardio machines but no one seems to really take notice, it was basically just grab whatever s available. The pool is huge and great. Loved the steam room and sauna, as they are both clean and spacious. Changing rooms are very large. The pool area is pretty empty if you go late morning/ early afternoon but the gym seems to always be busy. The restaurant boasts "fresh homemade snacks" on their website but I've only ever seen them serving hot dogs, hamburgers and sometimes those prepackaged sandwiches.

The pool has 25m swimming lanes, 2 diving boards, warmer non lane swimming pool, big hot tub, steam room and sauna. The best part is $2 swim nights. From 9-10pm at it's $2 to go for a swim. They also have family swims on Sunday and Monday evenings they are earlier for $2. This is the reason why I'm there so often. Change rooms are ok, can be a little dirty at the end of a day but I'm used to that now. Also even though there are "no shoes" signs everywhere you can bring dedicated pool shoes like flip flops as long as they are clean. Don't be that guy that walks in with your dirty shoes on!

(This review is mainly for the Fitness Centre)…read more As impressive as some Before & After, Thompson Community Centre (TCC) Fitness Centre has done the same with its interior. A majority of the gym's equipment has been updated with new, smoother, legible, and more padded machines. If it's grey, black, and blue... it's new! The fitness centre has strategically placed TV's with air conditioning to a cool, comfortable temperature as you get your sweat on. Half the gym is lined with windows to allow for natural sunlight and outdoor sights and the other half is lined with mirrors for your viewing pleasure as you count those reps and pump those muscles. Considering the size of the fitness centre, it packs a well-organized and good variety of: - Cardio machines like exercise bikes, rowing machines, step machines, ellipticals and treadmills with screens, iPhone connections, and fans. - Weight training machines to target all the major muscle groups of your body that you desire. - Free weights from 2.5 to 90 lbs with a variety of benches and plenty of mirror space. - Bench press, Squat rack and a Smith machine round out the major equipment. There's so many other equipment choices you can find like jump ropes, kettlebells, resistance bands, weight belts, medicine balls, mats, foam roller, and full and half exercise balls. Not sure where to start? There's always someone in the fitness centre that can answer your questions, and at times there's a certified fitness trainer present. If this isn't enough, the fitness centre pass also includes group fitness classes such as yoga, run clubs, outdoor bootcamp, functionality training and more. Once you're all done and sweaty, change rooms are available with lockers (bring your own lock) and showers outside of the fitness room beside the restrooms. Fitness centre drop-in (as of Fall 2013) is $5.30. There are 10 visit punch cards and monthly options in which the deals get better as more months you buy. A 3 month pass is $98 which works out to be around $30/month. Youth and Senior passes available at a discounted rate. The centre opens Monday-Friday 6am-9:45pm and Saturday-Sunday 8am-8:45pm. Also, the fitness centre is usually open on holidays unlike some other places. No excuses now people - get your pump on! Overall great fitness centre but it does get a little crowded and occasionally slightly smelly when its peak gym times. Regardless, it's a great fitness centre that offers a lot towards your health, fitness and goal in becoming the next Arnold! So get your sweat and reps on fellow Yelpers! ;) FYI: Wi-fi available at TCC, just ask the front desk for the password!
