Don't get me wrong, this DMV is teeny in comparison to others nearby, but come early and you can get everything done quickly. Considering when I walked in at 10am this place was heaving and there wasn't a spare seat, I was seen to within 10 minutes of walking through the door, had my documentation uploaded onto the system, had my picture taken, and within the hour I'd taken my theory test and was on my way to getting the road test. I chose Smithfield as the area is a lot more relaxed (and quieter) then taking the road test in town, but also because the customer service experience was far more superior. All desks were occupied, people were seen to in a timely manner, the flow was smooth and people weren't waiting all day for walk ins. I highly recommend this DMV, whether it's to take your theory / road tests, updating your license or documentation, even coming in for a copy of your birth certificate or to sign up for TSA Pre-check, it's worth driving the extra miles than waiting all day. Recently we were there and we were in and out in minutes. All we had to do is switch plates around after buying a new car. The service was great. The clerk was so nice, helpful and knowledgeable on the service we needed. The parking lot is large, and shared with many other businesses. We waited in our cars and then realized it was 1pm; and went in. We were very polite and after I waited 6-10 min once inside the trailer; I was beckoned and loudly asked: "what's your name!" I told her and in the small office everyone obviously heard. Then I got the 'third degree': You're not on this list, you don't have an appointment, etc ...,,,,,,,,,Then she loudly ordered me (and I served in the US Navy) to just take a picture on the door of our website! After that ordeal; I explained how I just made an appointment to correct the error DMV had made for GARAGE JURISDICTION; how I was told by the Commissioner of Revenue of Rappahannock Area via emails (professional and polite)to make appointment and visit KG DMV which I did; how I was a teacher and had today off only, my return move back to VA from another state, etc., etc, THEN!: SHE FORCEFULLY handed a paper to me. I asked where does it show jurisdiction and she just blatantly looked at me with a grim face and pointed to the bottom of my corrected registration. I looked and found it, then quickly ran from those evil people! *Not one employee got up to check over our names on the list where we wrote our names while we waited in our cars as told! I wanted to tell the DMV ladies in that trailer office: "I really am a human being and an adult. I don't mean to bother you and get my paperwork in order so that I am not taxed by the wrong jurisdiction and that KG DMV gets their personal property taxes and that I'm not fined hundreds upon hundreds of dollars$$$ for an error DMV made- PLEASE HELP ME the taxpayer???!!!!" Everything was good this visit, especially the security guard and the rep who helped us. My young daughters were in need of photo IDs. Our initial wait (this Friday mid morning) was very brief, about five minutes. We were helped by Jamila Harris. Instantly the customer service was top notch. She was sweet to my girls, friendly and knowledgeable to me. There was an unforeseeable snag that came up w my daughter's documents, which Ms. Harris worked to resolve. She kept us informed of the progress as it unfolded. I'm really glad we finally have a DMV in Ashland and I'm sure to return here for future needs.

Hello, first yelp reviewer here. I think often about the experience I had at this Richmond dmv…read morelocation and thought I might share if it helps even one person avoid a similar situation. I made the mistake of not making an appointment and was there to apply for a new ID in total for a minimum of 6 hours. I wouldn't still be bitter about this over a year later, but thanks to the red headed woman with a (Russian?) accent who took and accepted the very first rushed photo that I WAS MID BLINK, I now have to explain this very lovely experience to every single person I show my drivers license to. People literally bust out laughing when I show them and insist I go retake my photo. I'm so irritated because I had to, by law, go in person to apply for the real ID but my id is also expiring pretty soon so thanks to this incredible awesome and talented patient woman I have to take another photo only a year later. I wish I was being overdramatic I truly do, but it looks like a mugshot or that I'm on drugs??? Please fire this woman. I don't even live in the area anymore but I still think about this lady with frustration because she couldn't have taken one more minute to ensure there wasn't hair in my face/eyes and that I wasn't BLINKING. I attached a cropped picture to protect my identity but I had to show how bad it is. Thanks for reading. To the red headed woman with a (Russian?) accent, find peace, patience, and a new profession. Another update: Somehow my car ended up being reported as sold even though I never sold it. Luckily…read moreit was caught before it became a bigger issue, but it's still pretty concerning. Had it not been caught, I could have been driving around with an invalid registration and not even know it until I got pulled over. I had to write a handwritten note stating that I did not sell my car in order to get it corrected. Now I find myself checking my registration from time to time just to make sure everything is still valid. That's not something anyone should have to worry about. Looking back, this just adds to the concerns I already had after my experience with the employee I mentioned in my original review. I didn't make an issue because i wanted to be done with it all but it was quite concerning.

I was the only one in the appointment line and passed by about 25 people in the walk in line. I felt bad doing it, but when I walked out passing some of the same people in line, I felt good. The service was good and the rep had questions for the supervisor who answer her brashly. At the at moment I was relieved to no longer be working anywhere. My advice is to go online and make an appointment- it is very easy to do that.
