Literally, that evening I bought tickets online for the 2pm show for "Here Lies Love". Missed out on getting U2 tickets, so this is a spontaneous splurge. Scored on street parking diagonal from the venue on 4/16/17, which was sheer luck since our tickets were held at will call and no late seating. Darn Seattle traffic! Lots of anticipation leaning against the stage and loved the huge sparkly disco ball. Photography was strictly prohibited, so couldn't get a snap to share. The show presented the life of Imelda Marcos, former First Lady of the Philippines. Being of Filipino descent, this intrigued me. My lone trip to the PI in 1978 brought back some of the imagery of that era. Nasty, corrupt, excessive political times, but also the love of all things beautiful. Parts had me conflicted because this was based on actual history. But like living under today's administration, hope and happiness can happen from living in the moment. I thoroughly enjoyed being on the main floor (versus the balcony and reserved seating) and having the production in one's face. I even held hands with the actor who performed as Ninoy Aquino. Music, bright costumes, lights, glitz, videography, amazing stage, and lots of dancing! Reminded me of carefree nights of going to clubs from another lifetime. A major gamble for this venue to take this on, but kudos for bringing this innovative production to Seattle. Totally different, energetic, and loved that the entire ensemble were people of color. Talented people that looked like me! This was also a first theatrical musical that I brought The Homie. He enjoyed attending and wasn't even embarassed that his mom was shaking and shimmying wholeheartedly. The 90 minutes flew by! Fun times created by David Byrne and Fat Boy Slim.

I loved seeing Sister Act, the musical here. The singing and dancing was uplifting and fun - everything we needed on a cold rainy evening! I enjoy the fact that you can seat yourself in the auditorium and they have a variety of snacks and drinks to choose from in the concession area of the lobby. The theater was very clean and so were the facilities. It was a little hard to find, but once you do find the actual location, there are signs pointing you to it. Overall, great theater, great sound, and a great show!

Local artists come alive onstage here and it feels like a very accepting space. I especially love how intimate this theatre is. You really feel connected to the characters on stage no matter where they seat you. The sound quality is fantastic and this little stage is so polymorphous - I always look forward to what it will look like the next time I return! The arts, including performing arts, need space to make their work, and telecommuting is not a substitute. Examples are theater and dance performance. They need weeks, months, even longer, in person, as a group, in a heated space where jumping and pacing is not going to destroy their feet and bodies on up. This is one. Thankfully it is part of Seattle Central Community College, an institution who can resist the pressure to tear it down for apartments, condos or tech workspace, and play the long game of cultural evolution. It's back-to-back down Harvard with the Egyptian - that cinema space has found a home with SIFF. The Erickson rents their space to other performers and I saw my friends' performance there. The area is a parking nightmare weekends, but there is a paid parking garage at Harvard and Pine. Regular Seattleites probably know all the South Capital Hill parking angles better than I do! Of course the area weekends has many options for before and after a show. The theater itself has a respectable lobby. The house has comfortable seats and is small, intimate, with no sightline or sound issues. The lobby has a few couches and a bar. The two large restrooms are for everyone. Everything is neat and clean midscale. The sound is good. The stage has a good floor, but I don't think they have linoleum. There is really no fly space and no side stage area. The stage is not small, but it is smaller than the Meany and Paramount. All in all, the space hosted a great guest performance in a great active nightlife location, and in a comfortable, clean, and audience-friendly space. Another thing I really liked is the fact that they didn't compromise overall stage space for more seating. All these things enhanced our experience and it was really well setup for the play we watched. The play itself was amazing! The characters not only broke the 4th wall but made the audience a part of the play. This was in no means a desperate attempt to keep us engaged but it was to take us through the character's journey!
