Tucked away in the end of the cul de sac on the right, beside the Lahaina furniture store, there is a sign but it is hard to miss with all the greenery around it. I've been twice and both times they have been friendly, quick and helpful. They recommended I use the DMV kiosk in Safeway which I didn't even realize was there which saved me a heap of time as the DMV in Lahaina is horrible to deal with. Cheque or cash only, no cards. You can show them your insurance on your phone and they will take a photo of it. I will be back with my vehicles and those of the family I property manage for. I've read a few reviews saying they are grumpy. Perhaps, but I cracked a joke and they actually laughed at it so they can't be that grumpy! read more

I just moved here , and had to get the safety check. What a huge disappointment when I came here No greeting, no smile. Just , stares and I had to start the greeting. I got ( pull your car up ) With a clip board I watched as he walked very slowly, the owner sat in a chair didn't say a word . Again, no chat , how you doing today, just no Aloha ! You need to take this sticker off ! Ok , come back after you go to DMV Came back , and again the same nasty customer service. Tried to explain an issue while both men yelled over me , then a girl joined in ! I had three people talking in this conversation about the plate in the front! I clearly understood, but they kept talking and saying you don't understand, while both men patronized me all the while . Yes it's slightly ghetto. Yes there's seedy characters ambling about. There's a super sketchy pawn shop next door and the super sketchy owner is pacing around outside. But.... I've never had a problem here. My truck always passes safety check, and I'm in and out in less than 10 min. So, can't complain! These guys aren't consistent. Depending on who's working, what day it is, or their personal mood at the moment, you might have a different experience from one visit to the next. So I have a full size truck. Legal tint. No lift. Tires dont stick out. (Im tired of dealing with all those issues for safety checks) my only issue was not having my front license plate mounted to the front of my truck. I had a positive experience for my safety check for 2018 with these guys, had to go home and swap my tires out because they were a couple inches out too far. But they were nice about it, they explained that my tires were just barely out too far and they suggested fender flares which I already planned on getting, but hey at least they gave advice and not attitude. I went home, changed my tires and came back about an hour later and the guy working that day gave me a card for a free safety check the next time around for the trouble of me having to change my tires. Nice right? Now for my 2019 safety check. Different guys working. I park, older pot bellied Caucasian guy abruptly goes, you need to have your license plate on the front. Oops, my bad. I work two jobs, one is graveyard shift and I completely forgot to prep for this by remounting my license plate in my custom grill bracket because I have an off road style front bumper. This was only week day off to get this done so I get into my truck and remount it there on the spot. The other guy working, some mixed local ish guy comes over and tells me it cant be mounted to my grill cause the pot bellied dude "doesn't like it there" (after I overheard that guy saying "you cant just mount it wherever you want"). So I tell them, I got my safety through this shop last year and that is EXACTLY how I had it mounted and you guys took a picture of it that way. The guy goes well its not supposed to be mounted to the grill, you gotta drill through your bumper and mount it there. Yeah, I'll drill through my expensive off road style bumper. Now I wouldn't normally get upset with anyone for just doing their job, unless there's attitude thrown my way unnecessarily like this. Im sure they get annoyed each time someone comes in and their vehicle isn't immediately ready to go with no issues. I get that. But considering how every vehicle owner in Maui county NEEDS to have a safety check, I really dont like how inconsistent these guys are. One year its fine, the next year the same exact thing isnt fine. They shouldn't be allowed to play with peoples lives like this based on a whim or personal preference of theirs. The pot bellied guy seems like he is either prejudiced toward local truck owners or just really didn't wanna deal with me and wanted to instead help the pretty woman that was next in line after me (more likely) or he's just a prick (definitely). This is the problem you have when local government decides to pass on the responsibility of things required by law to a private entity. You get inconsistency, one place allows certain things and the next place doesn't. This leaves the every day resident scratching their head about what is and isn't allowed and then guys like this screw with us. Pass on this place if you can. Thank goodness for yelp because I wouldn't have found this place because I'm from the other side of the island and had no clue where to find a safety check place. Followed the map on yelp and found them very easily to find ( also with the help of their big red safety check sign posted on a tree.) Those who were treated badly probably went in with a bad attitude in the first place. These guys aren't getting paid any more than they regularly are if they give you friendly service. I went in with a friendly attitude and received fast and friendly service. It's as simple as that. Quick, but rude. All I really want is a car experience where I don't get ripped off and the people are nice. Is that too much to ask?? Price is right at this place, they were super fast, too, which works. One man was helpful and considerate since we just moved here and weren't quite sure how it all worked. The other man was downright rude and anti-social. My husband just wanted to know how many days he had to get his sticker after the DMV. We already gave them the money, so they weren't interested in helping us anymore. Short, annoyed answers like we were stupid. Then he rolled his eyes and said "Next!" I have taken my 2015 Toyota Tacoma to West Maui Safety Check four times. Every time it has been an easy efficient process of passing. For 2019, appointments are required. I think this is a good change that will minimize wait times. read more

As mentioned above, I would not normally rate a safety check inspection business on Yelp, but felt compelled to do so after reading some of the comments left before me that I happened to stumble upon when looking up the phone number to this place. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and the right to post a negative review. As such, I will dust off my soap box to say this: there are different kinds of services in this society and they cannot all be judged with the same degree of standards. There are those services that are a privilege that you seek out and choose to partake in, such as a meal at a restaurant, a hotel room for a vacation or buying something frivolous in a retail store. Then there are those that are a necessity to go on with your day-to-day life, such as getting your license renewed at the DMV, applying for a passport at the Post Office or getting a safety check. For those services in the first category, they exist as a luxury and an avenue to spend your hard-earned money, so you are absolutely entitled to be as particular as you wish and expect top notch personal interaction, quality product and service. On the other hand, for those services in the second category, shouldn't an honest transaction, competency of service and a timely turnaround be the real measures? I have visited West Side Safety Check for the last three years in a row, and yes, perhaps Pete and his squad will never get an award for delivering above expectation service, but I tell you this: he's been there for over a decade for a reason: his prices are fair, he doesn't use bogus decals and he's never gotten any heat for passing non-compliant vehicles. As such, I'm leaving a 5-star rating: as one reviewer said, if you're looking for a feel good safety check experience, perhaps somewhere on the South or Central side is better suited for you? I'll save my gas money for my next meal, which I much rather review anyway. read more

The parking is limited so you don't want to go charging in there with your car. I would suggest parking your car somewhere close and then going up to the employees that work there and ask when they want you to pull in. Other then that great place to get your vehicle inspected and doesn't take to long as long as you have your paperwork in order. Really great guys working their and very friendly! It has become my habit to check yelp reviews first before going to try services. I normally get my safety check done in Kahului although I live in Lahaina. When I found out that there's a place closer I looked at the reviews and to be honest I almost didn't wanna try there because of the negative remarks from others, but I'm glad I did.. Came over on the boat from Lanai just to get my friend's (who also lives on Lanai) car safety checked. The hours say 4:00. I was there at 3:30, and the guy said he was tired from doing checks all day, and couldn't help me out. Umm... what? I tried to explain the only reason I came to Maui was to help my friend out, and I had no other time to come over. The guy was a total jerk, and absolutely refused to do the safety check. First time in 12 years living in Hawaii I've ever had a business owner be an asshole like that. I recommend going down the road a ways to Kaanapali Car Care. I showed up after they stopped doing safety checks for the day, and when I told the guy there what happened he said he would get it done. Took him 10mins, and I was done. read more

I have had safety checks at this location for years and never have had a problem. The owner is nice and super efficient which I have always appreciated. As a rule, I never go to a business 30 minutes before they close for a service appointment and I never wait until the last minute to get a safety check. I prefer a stress free approach and West Maui Safety Check has always worked great for me. Really nice people with a really cute dog. read more

Yeah, I have to agree with above statements. I think the guy's name is Peter and he definitely has no customer service skills. I stopped in after being referred to him from the place around the corner (Juan's, in which I can say that shop was extremely polite and helpful - unfortunately doesn't do safety checks). Because I had my Geico insurance card on my iphone he was unable to do the safety check, stating he needed the paper copy to take a picture. WTF - the card is now digital and your looking at it. It's one thing to be afraid of technology, fine reject it all you want, but please do so without being a pain in the ass to the public at large. I'm driving to the other side. read more

Pretty awful. In the 35 minutes I spent at West Maui safety, I saw the main guy be super rude to a guy trying to get a safety for a motorcycle and heard racial comments about Jews. Yes that literally happened. The icing on the cake was when me and everyone in line watched the manager not to charge his friend the standard $20 for the safety that everyone has to pay... Except if you're friends with the manager I guess. Wish there was another safety check on the west side besides them. read more

Have gotten my inspection here twice now. Both times has been quick and painless. They are efficient and fair in pricing. $20 and I didn't have to waste time and gas money to drive to the other side. Excellent service. They do tend to get busy, but you need to be patient. The owner is very nice. Best time to go, is possibly then they first open, but then again, depending on day of the month. You can see what they have to deal with when you are there for any amount of time, people come in and don't read the signs, don't know what the process is for tabs and safety and expect these folks who deal with many people each day to be nice when they as customers are sometimes irresponsible and unprepared.
