When you need to get rid of some metal, it is easy and you get some dollars for it. The woman in the payment booth is friendy and funny.

Hurley Transfer Station & Recycling Center - They Recycle Practically Everything

Hurley Transfer Station & Recycling Center

With mounds of shiny visuals and machinery, I don't know why this Hurley recycling center- minutes…read moreaway from Woodstock is so intriguing with a "it could be part of a 70s horror movie taking place in a scrap yard" feel. Anyhow, our electrician removed antiquated fluorescent light fixtures in the basement- but, didn't take the junk he removed with him and it was up to us to dispose them in an eco-friendly way. After hubs looked into recycling centers, Hurley Transfer came up. The family who runs this recycling center deliver a full-service sorting system that is super easy that even a literate child could do this. Not really- but it's simple. Books and other paper goods go together, TVs and electronics together, light bulbs- the super thin+long ones we had, have to be placed in a plastic trash can and are $2ea to dispose, plastics, metal in another section, even clothing, etc. Because we were newbies, the father+son duo helped us along the way. Thank you so much! If you're a resident, there's a small annual fee to dispose your items. Double-check for non-residents though. Think all you want. Continue thinking that's it's ok to mix your waste- but its places like this that can help deviate waste from going into landfills.

I even got a compliment from the manager for flattening my tin cans, as asked in the site's rules (read: wish list.) Those tipping bins are trucked off when full, whether by round, space-hogging cans or a nice heavy load of flatties. So c'mon everyone, stomp those cans!

Bottle Depot - Business sign and surrounding vacinity

Recently, I went to Bottle Depot because when I went to recycle my cans and bottles I was a…read morehorrible day. Most of the machines I went down were either out of order or just plain "down" due to errors. I had tried several places. However, when I came in here, I really felt clueless and was looking for a quick turnaround. I had known about the nearby County Bottle and Can place (near the corner of Grand and Smith Streets), but by the time I would have went, they would have been closed - so I came here instead. I was looking for a place to try, and was really upping my luck by coming. But when I came in, although it seemed clean, apparently other insects were having a blast inhabiting the bin where the employees told me to dump my bottles. Much like the County Bottle and Can, employees hand-count every bottle, then give you your cash from recycling these 5 cent deposits so many people throw idly away. I'm a pro at knowing exactly which bottles have these, and it isn't rocket science to find them. I don't know what exactly was crawling around in the bin, but there was a black insect crawling around - but the employee wasn't too disturbed to notice. I had my bottles and cans in a plastic garbage bag, so when they asked me to dump them out, I heard a "clunk", and I even mentioned, "I hope my glass didn't break upon impact, but you asked me to do it." (I tried to pad the fall of the 2 glass bottles.) He stood there clueless, then started to count the bottles, sorting the glass ones into other employee-counted containers nearby next to the bin I dumped my stuff in. They are trying to social distance, but I don't believe it's working - it felt like they were still less than six feet away (I was wearing my mask - as a good New Yorker is - so it felt like less trouble than it was worth. A few moments later, he told me how many items he counted, ran some quick calculations and came over to me with the money which he took out of his drawer nearby. I don't know. While I'm sort of an avid fan of recycling at alternative places, I'm not too much of a fan of these bottle redemption places. I know it sits behind the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Kingston with it's yellow "Bottle Depot" sign out front, but the fact that there was not a single car here when I got here the other day, really makes me wonder if anyone is missing this place or if this should've showed me the sign of a really bad business - I don't know if I'll be back in (despite my 4-star review).

They count and sort the returnables and pay 5 cents each. Sometimes there is a wait, sometimes not…read more Don't have to stand in the store feeding icky bottles and cans into separate machines. Sometimes I go with 3 or 4 full bags. Great service.
