I have been literally throwing money away by recycling my bottles at the transfer station or forgetting to use the little credit receipts that I get from the supermarket machines until now. This was easy and I got the deposit money back from soda cans, wine bottles and beers all in one place. Some of my items did not have return value in NY and Leona was careful to show me how to check which could be redeemed and which could not without being dismissive or rude about it and was clear about counting and adding up my returns. This was a simple way to reduce waste into the landfill plus get back my deposit money for all my cans and bottles. I highly recommend.

Only polite request I ever reecived was not to show up 5 minutes before they close with a full truck If I have anything that I am not sure about, I go with a sample and ask if they take items like that. As to the review from a few years ago about being yelled at by "rednecks", I can only say that I would have just ignored somebody like that and gone and talked to the boss in the office to tell the guy off. I think these characters are no longer there. Also, complaining about what they pay is useless. They state clearly that everything you bring to them it is just metals, so what an item cost originally or is worth is of no concern. Just ask your self why you are "recycling" ? For me it is not to make money. I don't follow the going rates for metals. I like to do good for the environment and the few bucks you get can be spent at the hot dog place next door:-) It's close to where I work and I am happy to have this place for drop off, instead of putting stuff into regular garbage. May times I am just happy to leave stuff without being paid.

Anyhow, our electrician removed antiquated fluorescent light fixtures in the basement- but, didn't take the junk he removed with him and it was up to us to dispose them in an eco-friendly way. After hubs looked into recycling centers, Hurley Transfer came up. The family who runs this recycling center deliver a full-service sorting system that is super easy that even a literate child could do this. Not really- but it's simple. Books and other paper goods go together, TVs and electronics together, light bulbs- the super thin+long ones we had, have to be placed in a plastic trash can and are $2ea to dispose, plastics, metal in another section, even clothing, etc. Because we were newbies, the father+son duo helped us along the way. Thank you so much! If you're a resident, there's a small annual fee to dispose your items. Double-check for non-residents though. Think all you want. Continue thinking that's it's ok to mix your waste- but its places like this that can help deviate waste from going into landfills.

Also the Ph was so high (8.1) nothing will grow in it. I've tried elemental sulphur and peat moss to reduce the alkalinity without success. The amount of sulphur I need to add, and the time it would take to achieve the desired result are just unacceptable. I'm planning to dig it all out of my beds and get some proper compost elsewhere. They take everything that is put out as long as it will fit in the truck, and if something falls on the ground they pick it up. I was starting at the end of my driveway where the snow plows deposited wet, heavy slush. I observed a sanitation truck come down Bruynswick Rd in the Gardiner, New Paltz area on 12/5/2024 @ approximately 11:30 am & stopped across the street from me, the gentleman got out of his truck & proceeded to pick up my neighbors garbage pail out of the snow that obviously had been knocked over by a snow plow. He then continued & picked up all the garbage that was knocked out of the pail & cleaned it all up. I thanked him for the EXTRA EFFORT he performed. I wish I asked for his name, but I asked God to bless him. Most sanitation companies wouldn't get out of their trucks anymore as they have an arm on their truck to do the dirty work & if your pail was knocked over by either the wind, a bear or a snow plow, they leave it where it lies an continue down the road. Kudos to LeMela Sanitation & the gentleman who went ABOVE & BEYOND his duties. I didn't ask for his name, but he seemed he was Latino, I sure hope his management see's this review & recognizes him for a JOB WELL DONE. When my wife comes home from work, I am going to suggest changing our company to LeMela Sanitation.
