First time visitor to WCSS the other day. I felt like I was an alien- I'm guessing because I was middle-aged and not blond with a surfer attitude, I was treated with disgust from the staff, including the owner, and her family members. I always say, "Never judge people for you never know what burdens they carry upon their shoulders." I was there to spend some money - Big mistake with your attitude. I will not return to this store. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!! Be aware that they don't like foreigners or tourists!!! My husband got me this t-shirt and when I tried it on, I noticed some kind of sticky glue in the inside part (where the graphic design is). I really liked the shirt, so I decided to wash it to see if it would come out, but it didn't. My husband took me back to the store to exchange the shirt. When we got there, I talked to the owner, showed her the shirt, and explained her everything that happened. To my surprise, she said that I was LYING. I honestly couldn't believe she said that. She said that it wasn't possible for there to be sticky glue on the inside and that I probably glued the shirt myself. Why I would do something like that? I am in Florida for vacation, not for gluing shirts! She wouldn't exchange the shirt or give us our money back, and she was really impatient with my English accent (I am from Brazil). You can see in the photos how the graphics on the t-shirt aren't right. We didn't want to argue any further and ended up leaving the store without an exchange. Be aware! I can't believe the bad reviews on here. I've been coming here for over 30 years and have never once had a bad experience. Jim and his family are great people and locals and love the community. Their shop is an institution on the island and have provided thousand and thousands of surfers and beach goers all of their needs for decades. If you want super cheap prices go to some outlet store or Ross or Marshall's. But they have the latest and best products and give great service. You think it's cheap to operate a business on AMI? Considering they had about 6 employees in the tiny space during a pandemic, you might have thought you would get good help. Instead two of the girls were gossiping behind the counter while the others were acting like my kids were in a china shop or something. Maybe they cater to locals based on other reviews, but we were ready to spend some money and ended up leaving with only a few things since the staff was rude and not helpful. I feel compelled to write a review because personally my experience at WCSS was great and I don't understand the negative reviews here. I love a good surf shop and having grown up in OC Cali I know a good one when I see it. I came in on Sat looking for a bathing suit and received exceptional customer service- helping me to find styles and sizes. The selection for women's and men's gear is among the best I've seen, the prices are in line with the brands. I don't know what people are saying about the prices - this is not a 3 for $15 T-shirt shop, the quality is good - you get what you pay for. The staff could not have been more helpful. It was busy when I was checking out and they did everything possible to expedite the process. We are here for 5 weeks, I'll be back with my boyfriend for more stuff. Called the shop to see if a surfboard was in stock and the girl that answered could be heard in the background debating with another girl as to who picked up the phone. This went on for surprisingly longer than I would of guessed before the two concluded the phone was not in its cradle and had to be returned to its proper place. Next time I want to seek information about a product in the shop, I guess I will just send a text so the employees don't get flustered. read more

This shop is a joke. They have the items you're probably looking for, boards and swimwear, but drop the ball with customer service. I'm a very young looking adult, I sometimes go into a shop and am treated like a teen looking around despite being a customer with money in my pocket. I walked into this store looking to buy a board, I entered their side room and am looking at the items for 10 minutes till someone, who I guessing was a manager or the owner acknowledged my presence. It was an older woman with a tun of makeup, she said "hello" and I replied with a "Hello ma'am, how are you?", no response or even another look. She just walked away. Cool. A teenage girl walked up to me next. She didn't really say anything, just stared at me. I noticed none of the boards I was looking at had prices clearly marked, so I asked what they might be and she quickly ball parked the prices of the boards and went back to standing there. The choices of art on the boards was lame imo, however I don't hold this against them. The prices were high, but that's to be expected cause you're buying it on hw island, not something that initially deterred me, but something to keep in mind. That combined with the limited options and laughable service lead me to decide to hold off on buying a board there and get one somewhere else later. I'm all for supporting local shops but this is a horrible example of one. They need some new management or something because I feel no draw to spend my money there. My folks live on AMI and I've been shopping at WCSS for years. My experience is always the same. Quality products in an authentic surf shop environment. I will agree that the customer service is not comparable to some chain stores, but this is not necessarily the type of place where you expect to have a sales associate following you around like a puppy. The shop is small and packed full of merchandise. If you're looking for a high end surf & swim item, this is the spot. I wouldn't recommend for tourists looking to score a souvenir. where do I start? you would think at a nice local surf shop would come sweet friendly workers but this is the exact opposite case ! the most unfriendly , crabby staff ever . I purchased a 15 dollar ring and not even a minute later when leaving the store i dropped in the crack of the stair case at the store . We tried looking for it but all the staff cared about was themselves . one girl kept complaining about her outfit getting dirty ! The other lady said that sucks nothing we can do . Who goes on vacation to the beach and forgets their bathing suit? Me, that's who. Pretty much every single time. So needless to say, I've got a lot of experience buying overpriced beach essentials from local shops at the last minute. Surf Shop had a large selection of bathing suits and other beach accessories, but the prices seemed surprisingly high even though I was fully expecting to get fleeced due to my packing negligence. The service was pretty lacking - I didn't see anyone working there until I was ready to check out, and even then I had to wander around until I found an employee, who seemed more interested in hanging out with her friends and trying on bikinis rather than ringing up my purchase. Wait, maybe that wasn't such a negative... Regardless, I did manage to get a bathing suit on Anna Maria Island with a minimum amount of trouble here. read more

What a joke of a surf shop. Super high prices, crappie employees. So I have been coming to this area for about five years and daughter would love to go in there and look around. We never by anything because it's so overpriced. So this summer we decided to give them another shot. Why, i have no idea, once again the young girls behind the counter could give two shits about customers. I realize I'm sort of a customer service snob, but this place kind of sucked. I went with my brother and brother-in-law because they both forgot their swim trunks while on vacation, and while they seemed to have an OK selection, it all seemed way overpriced. The employees were all hanging around talking to friends trying on bikinis- or maybe they were all employees, I couldn't actually tell. I don't remember anyone saying so much as "Hello" to us when we walked in, and when I was ready with my purchase I stood at the counter for way too long before anyone came to help me. I say it was too long because there were about 6 girls standing at the end of the counter gossiping about some party that was happening later that night...one of the girls eventually came to ring me up. If I'm back in the area and need beachwear in the future, I'm definitely going to go somewhere else. read more

I am surprised about Mark and Becca A.'s reviews. This is exactly the kind of shop I was looking for. Yes, I forgot my bathing suit, like Mark, but the difference was that I was looking for high end surfer brand board shorts and it took us some time to find them. I was just on the east coast with two pairs of nice board shorts but when I stopped at home in Orlando on the way to Longboat Key to swap out dirty clothes with some clean ones, I accidentally threw the bathing suits in with the dirty laundry and I forgot to put them back in before leaving. So, when we got to the unit and unpacked I noticed I had nothing to swim in so we went out on a mission to find some board shorts. Three hours later, I had some options. It was worth the journey. We actually had a great time exploring the Longboat Key and surrounding area while looking. Next time Mark and Becca are in town they need to check out Island Bazaar on Ana Maria Island and Swim City over on Longboat Key. Much cheaper places and probably better "customer service." I can't believe they were so harsh on this place. It is the quintessential surf shop with expected high end brands that are actually priced competitively with normal surf family management. All in all, this is the kind of place that you want when you are at the beach. Great surf shop! read more

went there to purchase a bodyboard for my kids kind of pricey but I bought it anyways. That was at 11 AM I called them at 2 the same day to let them know the board was separating (coming unglued). They told me they would look at it. Next day wanted my money back they said no. And no store credit, just exchange for same POS. I'm sure they got their money back. read more
