Long story short, the rate I was quoted on the phone ($25-30/hr per cleaner, no HST, and a 10% discount for providing some of our own supplies) was entirely different from what owner Deanna actually charged when she arrived at my place. Once she arrived and walked through my apartment, she quoted $235 + HST for a 2.5 hour cleaning job (this should have been $135, with the 10% discount). I managed to talk her down to $200+HST, but that still worked out to nearly $40/hr per cleaner - a far cry from the $25-30 she advertises on Craigslist!!
She seemed really confused when she arrived, and did not remember any of the details we'd previously discussed on the phone. While I was trying to show her around the house and explain what I wanted done, she was nattering constantly about herself and her business and did not appear to be paying any attention to my requests. I gave her a written list of tasks, which she briefly glanced at and then put aside.
During the cleaning job, I was trying to get some work done on my computer. She continuously interrupted me to tell me stories about herself, to badmouth other local cleaning companies, or to ask me personal questions totally unrelated to the cleaning job I had hired her to do. Quite frankly, I was mentally drained at the end of it all, and annoyed that I was apparently paying someone to chat with me rather than to clean my home.
As for the cleaning job itself, some parts were done exceptionally well and other parts that were promised by her (or were requested on my list of tasks) were not done. She asks clients to do a walk-through at the end -- well actually, she made me do numerous walk-throughs throughout the cleaning, which was confusing because she'd ask me to do a walk-through of a room that wasn't even finished being cleaned, and then get huffy when I pointed out something that wasn't done yet!
During the final walk-through there was so much pressure and interruption (her nattering) that it was impossible to actually do the walk-through properly. Any deficiency I pointed out was explained away by the fact that my house was apparently dirty and hasn't been properly maintained, and that it takes several cleanings for these things to come clean. I will just state for the record that my place is actually immaculately maintained by anyone's standards, and that most of the deficiencies could have easily been fixed with a little bit of elbow grease and attention to detail. So much for the "deep clean" that I was supposedly paying for!
Because we paid by cheque, she requested my credit card number to "guarantee" the check. I immediately regretted providing that information to her, and I actually ended up having to put a block on my credit card to protect its integrity.
After Deanna left, I was able to inspect more carefully, and I was not satisfied that we got good value for such a huge amount of money. I was not satisfied that this super expensive "deep clean" (that only took 2.5 hours!) was anything more than what we would have expected on an ongoing basis.
The next day I called to speak to her, hoping that under her promised "100% satisfaction guarantee," she would come back to rectify the deficiencies. This is where everything went downhill. She would not listen to anything I was saying, she continually interrupted me mid-sentence and then accused me of interrupting her, and after a few minutes, hung up on me. Later, she harassed me with repeated phone calls to my home, during which she threatened me, made false accusations of criminal activity (told me that she had filed a report with the police about me), and generally caused me to be worried for my safety. The scariest part was that I had no idea what her intentions were or what she was capable of doing, and now she knew exactly where lived and how to get into my building!!
Bottom line: When you hire cleaners, you are trusting strangers in your home, so do your due diligence and do not be mislead by a shiny website and false promises on Craigslist/Kijiji ads.
I have filed a complaint with the BBB and would strongly advise anyone else who has had similar experiences to do the same. Avoid this company at all costs. It is not worth the hassle.
ADDENDUM: It appears that Yelp is finally catching on to the number of fraudulent reviews about this business. If you check the filtered reviews, you will see that 19 five-star reviews have now been removed by Yelp for violation of content guidelines, and that the "reviewers" accounts have been banned.
