We had such a lovely time at the West coast grill! The restaurant has an ocean theme to it and faces The waters as well. There are many tables and it got busy after we sat down. The front desk recommended us to make a reservation. The servers were very warm and attentive. Our food was so tasty and I wish the portion was a bit larger. the restaurant is inside a hotel and it was a beautiful view when you step outside to where the hotel is. we went here for my birthday dinner, i order the lamb and it was pretty good. however our server was extremely rude. the restaurant wasn't very busy when we went and she took very long to take our orders. she also seemed extremely unhappy. we asked to get a hot sauce when the food came out and she rolled her eyes ... we were a party of 12 so she probably didn't care to be nice since she was guaranteed a gratuity. which is extremely shitty and unprofessional in my opinion. we were not a difficult party either. we just ordered our food, drinks and asked for a hot sauce lol. we were seated next to the bar and kept hearing glasses being broken. they definitely need to get their staff to get their shit together read more

Our waiters (Jessyca and Stephanie) delivered flawless and friendly service making our dinner and breakfasts (respectively) a fabulous experience. Well, I wish I could recommend this restaurant but my experience with the service and the food is anything but good. I ordered a bowl of clam chowder to go but the bag I was given contained fish chowder in three containers. The soup set me back $30. Not only was I given the wrong order but it took me 20 minutes of waiting to get it. I was told that I needed to wait in the hallway not in the restaurant with nothing offered during my wait. Before I left for the hallway I looked into the kitchen and noted that there were at least six people preparing for for a restaurant with a very few customers. I thought that a simple order of soup "to go" would not take long, but I noticed that the server who took my order was serving other diners before getting the soup in a bag to deliver to me. Needless to say I will never be back and I would advise anyone wanting to eat here to avoid it at all costs. read more

Ambiance of the restaurant is so peaceful. Soothing to look out the window towards the water. Breakfast items on the menu are amazingly delicious and darn big portions. Smoked salmon Bennies are a must! So generous with the smoked salmon. Ordered a classic breakfast also and certainly enjoyed every bite, esp the tasty bacon strips. Was at the restaurant later for last bit of Happy Hour and also had food off the dinner menu. Again good portions for HH of roasted Brussel sprouts and chicken wings, dinner items were seafood risotto and lamb shank. Servers were excellent! Fast and efficient in looking after all our needs. Tucked into a nice hotel in Sooke, West Coast Grill has all the makings of a tourist trap: overpriced and underwhelming. The dinners we're confusingly designed - the fish came with fries, and soup, and coleslaw, all tucked in a wooden tray. The butternut squash was covered in arugula and goat cheese, oddly proportioned and giving the dish an overall confusing texture. We came here for happy hour twice while vacationing in Sooke. The ambiance and decor is nice, it's clean and modern and nice views of the harbour. The servers were all very welcoming and friendly. We only ordered the shrimp shared plate (small portion for $30!) and garlic fries- both tasted great. Good selection of wine & beer for happy hour. Please don't go here to eat food The atmosphere and decor is beautiful so if it's just for a drink, perfect. But if you're looking for a good meal and to not get ripped off don't eat here. First things first I live in Sooke and know it well and I brought my parents here on their trip to BC. My dad had a sharp piece of metal in his breakfast. Looked like it was off some sort of blade. The staff gave a half assed apology which sounded like they were blaming us for planting it. My mom got a eggs Benny which arrived ice cold and took forever to get to the table. I got the chicken and waffles which was over 20 bucks and consisted of frozen chicken strips and cheap low quality waffles and not a single bite had any flavour whatsoever. Service was mediocre at best especially when it came to the unacceptable incident with a sharp piece of metal/blade hidden in my dad's food and the fact they didn't seem to care. I'm very unimpressed with this place. I have a large range of friends and family along with connections and friends in schools in Sooke and sadly I can for sure make sure no one eats here for now. read more

Once again West Coast Grill chef Adam Guther has proven his expertise with fresh local seafood! Our group of 10, had a delightful & delicious meal with a wide tasting of the tempting menu. Appetizers included luscious crab cakes, calamari & the three cheese dip. The calamari got high praise from our out of town guests. The mushroom ravioli was rich & unctuous & satisfying. The fresh fish & chips with a side of chowder was yummy & the kids all loved the chicken & chips. We rounded off the meal with a variety of desserts: the eye popping mile high mud pie, the spectacular chocolate tart & an array of ice creams & sherbet. Meh. An ok place to have breakfast if you're staying at the hotel, but nothing to write home about. They do have great GF options across the board (including gluten free pasta at dinner), and many items can be altered to be made GF. Unfortunately they were out of crab when we had dinner there and the Fisherman's Bowl was pretty seafood light for what it was. Can't say the heavily dressed salad was much better. The hollandaise sauce on the eggs Benedict lacked flavor, and the potatoes were bare, and a bit soggy feeling. Finally, the bar was also quite light in terms of selection. Great spot for the views and service (you couldn't ask for more friendly or attentive staff) but wouldn't seek out the restaurant again. read more

This weekend we got the change to try the West Coast Grill in Sooke, for our mini getaway. We had made reservations earlier which helped us escape the long waiting period. We had asked to sit outside the balcony so we can get a nice view along with our dinner. However, the waitress said no and that there was a huge waiting period for that. Which wasn't true because we came towards the end of the night and no one else had gone to sit outside. Which I believed that was unfair because we were coming from Vancouver and were there for only a short period of time. However, the Lachos were so tasty and I have to say these were the best lachos I have ever had! My pasta ravioli was perfectly saucey and I loved the kick of the walnuts in it. Overall the food was amazing! If we got a chance to enjoy the view outside, I would rate this a 5! read more

This is another case of looks can be deceiving. The place has beautiful decor and the chairs are very comfy. You'd expect first class service and cuisine, but they fell short. We ate there twice. Once for breakfast and once for the special Christmas Dinner. For breakfast we were told we needed reservations and yet no one even asked when we showed up. The place was mostly empty. We had problems with the wait staff. They seem quite unorganized and not trained very well. It took forever to get our order placed. The food was good, but we lost our waitress when it was time for the bill. For the Christmas Dinner, the Seared Digby Scallop was overcooked and tough. the Wagyu Beef was mediocre and not very flavorful, the Seafood Trio was rubbery and overcooked. Came here at 11:45am for their all you can eat brunch for $21.95. The brunch buffet offered eggs, eggs benny (the hollandaise was way too thick and tasted like plain mayo), potatoes, pancakes, sausages, bacon, salad, toast, sushi, mini pastries and cake. I was told that they had run out of sushi in the all you can eat brunch and would not be bringing anymore out. I was also told that they do not start serving their lunch menu until 12:30pm. Pretty disappointed in the quality of food, as well as options in the all you can eat brunch. At the end of our meal we waited about 15 minutes with our waitress not in sight. So we ended up going to the bar to pay for our meal. Our waitress noticed us at the bar and met us there. It took her 4 times to print the correct receipt, and she typed in the amount wrong on the credit card machine. I most definitely won't be back as it was a terrible experience. read more

Once again we enjoyed the delicious seafood Chowder for lunch. It comes with a hearty wedge of grilled bread that is crispy golden on the outside and soft and easy to bite into, in the inside. The chowder, for $18.00 had about four mussels, a couple of clams, one scallop and one prawn and a number of chunks of good white fish. I think the base soup was their clam chowder. Delicious without big chunks of potatoes. We preceded the soup with a plate of tender calamari that came with grilled limes and a tasty limey sauce to dip the calamari in. It was topped with some lightly pickled onion slices...very tasty without being overwhelming. I came mostly for the dessert. We had the Stick in the Mud pie that was yummy expresó ice cream with chocolate nubs inside, all sitting on a very chocolate base..then decorated in chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Two of us shared it and couldn't eat it all! The service was good with a cheery gal from Peru who was quite delightful. I brought several friends out a month ago after seeing the Mud Pie advertised on the Upside on TV one evening. I returned yesterday because the chowder was so delicious. I have another date in late October picked to treat some other friends to this hidden gem. Masks are mandatory walking in through the hotel lobby, and hand sanitizer is available at the entrance to the restaurant. Tables that had been sanitized were clearly marked with a card. I'd recommend this Grill to anyone who enjoys beautifully plated, quality food. Make a reservation. read more

We found the West Coast Grill because we had a disappointing dinner down the road at Route 14. We walked into the Tiffany blue coloured exquisitely coordinated restaurant and felt like we had discovered a gem. The views on the balcony were amazing and the huge bar area was inviting. The main attraction for me was the steamer pot, the west coast chowder and the clam chowder. The fish and chips were also yummy as the batter was crispy and crunchy and airy all at the same time. Had an amazing dinner tonight at the West Coast Grill. We were seated promptly by the hostess and was pleased that SASHA was our server tonight. Sasha is the BEST server Ive had in many years and the WCG is so lucky to have him. We got our starter which was oyster and those were very good but it fell through on the main course. We had fish and chips, they were undercooked. The center of my salmon was still cold and the fries were soft. The clam chowder, was anything but clam chowder, should have been called cream veggie soup. We came for buck a shuck oysters at 5pm with hour to spare in happy hour and they had no oysters left. My wife ordered the crab, they had no crab left. We ordered steam pot and that was pretty good so we got over the fact we missed out on oysters. But then our mains came out. My wife had the salmon. It was dry and over cooked. We told waiter and he just said that's how it's meant to be? I cook better salmon on my BBQ! I had the Tuna. It looked to be cooked perfect but was also dry and lacked any flavour. Normally Tuna would have some type of rub or crust, or at least a light sauce. Not this Tuna. Just plain dry Tuna. Won't be going back here even if we stay at the attached hotel. Even after reading the reviews, I was expecting the food to be just alright as can happen with many restaurants that rely on their amazing views to bring in the business. I was wrong. I had the fisherman's pasta with scallops, mussels, clams, fish and prawns with a white cream sauce and bread. It was so delicious and honestly the meal I enjoyed the most while visiting the island for two weeks. The view from the patio was stunning and brought a sense of peace and serenity. My husband had the fish and chips which also comes with chowder and it was all great too. Service was attentive and friendly but not too much. While I would agree you pay a few bucks more than you would a more casual restaurant, it was absolutely worth it in my opinion. I would love to go back next time! read more

First off we loved the out door seating facing the marina. In addition it was happy hour, the Cesar was spicy & well seasoned. Our food was the 2 lb hot pot which was amazing - the broth was like a soup in itself. We also ordered & shared the clam chowder with whole clams & prawns as well as a southwest salad. On a monday evening I called to make a reservation as we were coming all the way to sooke from Victoria . i was informed that there were none left, but I could just come and be a "walk in" . I clarified that I was coming in, and it was a celebration night. The hostess assured me it would be no issue when our group of 4 arrived i was told that the stand by wait would be about an hour. Anyone that knows the area understand options are limited, and we chose to wait. just over an hour passed and i checked in with the hostess, she rudely said " i will call you". We were at this point ready to leave. I poliet went to twll the hostess to remo our names but spoke to a manager instead. They saw my name on the stand by and apologized (at least 6 names were crossed off below mine). we were asked if we would stay if we were seated immediately and being so hungry and low on options agreed. despite the rude encounter with the hostess ur server was great. She was apologetic and professional. we quickly ordered off the limited menu (hope you like goat cheese!) the drinks were poorly made for something that is bartender 101 (martini and Shirley Temple). we stuck with water after that. The decor is nice, and the food was mediocre. the chicken and risotto was ok, burger was good, MOA salad was tasty and dip was good. we were going to order the crab cakes, but the server warned us against it. in the end this place really needs to figure things out if they want return customers or to win over locals. So very disappointed to have to write this after having quite a few good meals and experiences at West Coast Grill. With the rather new Covid New Years restrictions put in place two days earlier which included no alcohol served after 8:00 pm, we decided to clarify by calling the restaurant about our 7:45 pm reservation. We asked them if we would still be able to order a bottle of wine with our meal when we arrived. They assured us we could. Once we got there, we clarified with the hostess (who turned out to be a manager) if we could, and she verified that it would be fine. We were off to a good start with a 5 course meal, but were awaiting the main 4th course, and we were informed by our waitress and the said manager that we would have to forfeit the wine and a cocktail we were holding for our son who would be arriving later. We were told that 9:00 pm was the cutoff by which they allow any alcohol to be consumed. At this point, we had only had one glass each and were not allowed to have any with our main course! At no point before this were we warned this would happen. The manager and waitress removed all the drinks at our table. I am all for abiding by Covid restrictions, but I believe this manager took them to extreme as we have not found anything online that jibes with their version. This soured our celebrations and capped of 2020 with a huge middle finger! Expected way better from this restaurant. read more

Went here on a Wednesday at 5:30 for the half price appetizers. Had the calamari, 2 pound steamer pot, and the salmon tacos. Wife and I were very impressed with the flavors and presentation. Our server (gentleman wearing a turban) was fantastic as was the service in general. We ordered a strawberry daiquiri which was awful and was comped. Had the stick in the mud and a chocolate ganache for dessert. We were stuffed to say the least but well worth the effort. Prices ridiculously reasonable during happy hour.
