Good spot for a quick drink and some snacks in the afternoon. My friends and I passed by Port Angeles and were feeling a bit hungry. Knowing that the ferry line would be long, we wanted to grab some light food here before grabbing dinner back in Seattle. Hook & Line Pub was perfect for that. We stopped by Sunday around 2:30 and it wasn't busy at all. We were seated in the downstairs area where the bar is. They have a lot of food options, but we opted for a couple cups/bowls of chowder. They offer two kinds: the standard clam chowder but also a smoked salmon chowder that was very intriguing. I had a bowl of the smoked salmon for $11. Also shared chips and salsa for the table for $5. Food was decent. I liked the smoked salmon chowder with the chunks of smoked salmon inside, but next time I think I'll stick to clam chowder as that's my personal fave. However, I was a bit underwhelmed by the salsa, which I'm pretty sure came straight out of a jar, and the chips didn't taste very fresh. Also, one friend ordered a beer and they completely forgot; he didn't get it until we asked them about it maybe 15 minutes after ordering. All the staff were very kind, and we weren't in any rush to get our food, however, the starter calamari came out after our mains arrived, so we did not finish this. Stopped in while passing through. The restaurant was super packed so we chose a side by side table on the patio, facing the street. Hostess was on it and brought us water... took about 15 minutes to get a waitress and I had to stop her because she took an order from someone next to us who hadn't been there as long as us and she started walking back in. I was traveling alone and visiting the Olympic National Forrest. Their policy is reservations only for people eight or more but they didn't even tell me that they knew it was my birthday and they went ahead and made the reservation anyway with a quiet booth!! This deserves a five star review for kindness. I had a bit of a difficult time getting here with a blowout tire back in Salem, OR and all kinds of train issues and having to take a three hour Uber up so just the kindness of the situation was so meaningful to me. To be honest, their food menu looked amazing. I am so tired of people having weird food items. This was like basic good American fare, every day and well cooked. It was beautiful like Monday pot roast with and Tuesday barbecue ribs with everything looked beautiful in the window and the inside was gorgeous. Not to mention the kindness. The ratio of the bread to the soft shell crab was overpowering. The sauce on it tasted like a Big Mac sauce. I arrived right after what seemed to be a fairly busy rush from the look of the restaurant. There were few open tables but the host was very welcoming and offered me a table or a seat at the bar. I could see that there were only two servers and one host on staff this evening. The servers were juggling both the table service and bar workload amongst themselves. The host was rocking it. He was seating customers, working carry out orders, running food, running behind the bar, and cleaning, as impressively as possible with a nearly full restaurant! It took a little while before my server arrived as the place was busy and she was working many tables and occasional bar service. She asked me if I wanted a drink and if I wished to order my meal now with my drink order or keep looking at the menu. I ordered a four piece halibut and chips with a sprite and waited a reasonable amount of time before my food arrived. The kitchen seemed to be on it, because I expected a longer wait time with the workload. The host delivered my order and the food looked very good. The fish was exactly as I expected, and bigger than I anticipated. The French fries were crisp and warm. The only problem was that my soft drink order didn't come before or with my food. I started to nibble and waited for the server to come check on me. She arrived as I was finishing my first piece of fish and I asked about my drink. She apologized and quickly returned with it. To be fair, it's easy to forget a non alcoholic beverage with such a high workload. I finished the meal and then waited for my check. The wait was longer than I felt comfortable taking up a table, but again, not actually too long for how busy the restaurant was. Once I handed over my card, it was returned quickly with the bill, and then I was on my way. I would say the crew that evening definitely had grace under pressure. read more
