"Temptation's strong Salvation's gone) I'm on my way To hell's half-acre" (Dixie Chicks) All those sad stories and obituaries about the death of the American shopping mall apparently never made it across the plains to Fargo's West Acres shopping mall. We found it to be jam packed and vibrant with a busy food court and over 100 stores and attractions. You won't find any escalators or elevators inside, because it's a one-story mall. After we walked into the main entrance, we were greeted by a huge ceramic fireplace that must come in very handy on those cold North Dakota days and nights. One interesting thing I never saw before was a "Build A Bear" kiosk in the middle of the mall, and not inside a traditional mall store. The mall houses the Roger Maris Museum, a wonderful exhibit dedicated to its hometown baseball hero. We picked up coffee, a chai, and an iced tea and strolled around enjoying the sights. On the way out, we hit the very congested food court and took a Poke bowl from Ginza Ramen and Poke back to our hotel to share. It was wonderful seeing how "alive" this big mall was, in defiance of the downward spiraling of so many other malls. read more

A large indoor shopping mall that was surprisingly busy on a Sunday afternoon. Lots of folks walking, many of whom were carrying bags. Hooray, retail therapy! There's plenty of parking and there was a roving security patrol in the parking lot. I also spotted a security guard walking the mall. It was nice to see. Awesome mall! Visiting from out of state from area where malls are on the decline I was pleasantly surprised by how great this mall is. It was clean and had lots of options for dining, shopping and socializing. If you have kids they have an enclosed play area that look like a great play space. Game room area. Plus fish aquarium, book nook and lots of seating areas through the mall. So many great stores to choose from and the mall had beautiful art displays and other painted walls to make it fun to explore. read more

I grew up in Fargo in the 80's so I like to go visit West Acres every now and then to see how it has changed. I like that they still have the super cool fountain, albeit in a different wing. I like that Macys aka Daytons back in the day, is in the same place. I like that Merle Norman is still there, but I like that otherwise it has kept pace with society and has a full vibrant mall with only two open storefronts that I could see. Good job staying relevant and not turning into a faded relic like malls in the bigger cities. read more

Terrible security. My friends and I were waiting for our ride to pick us up. Security escorted us for opening a door to a family letting them know the mall was closed. The family then walked back to their car. I understand that security wouldn't want us letting in random people after mall hours but we didn't let anybody in. They left after we told them it was closed. This was 2-3 minutes after the mall had closed. We then had to wait outside in the scorching heat while other families who had rides were inside in the cool. Also, to mention, we are children. There was no reason to escort us. Malls in many places are a dying breed. This mall was a little busier than most and I just loved the several comfortable seating areas they had throughout the mall. There were lots of shops doing a steady business. There is a latest generation Best Buy as one of their anchor stores. All in all an attractive and very comfortable mall for shopping. read more

Security harrased and detained my children. When I asked what was going on, they lied to my face about the incident. They then watched the cameras back and told me they where acting suspiciously, yet refused to show me the footage of the incident or the interaction between my children and their employee. I was told to see the footage I would have to wait 3 days for a manager to be in or get the police involved. This is not a safe place to hang out! read more

The largest local mall until either Winnipeg or Minneapolis, basically. Lots of tourists used to frequent this from Canada until the Mall of America opened. Still, they've re-vamped their inside a bit back from in the 90's and added a large, airy food court, moved the original brass iron swan fountains to another part of the mall, and added a children's playground. I'll stop by here for the Orange Julius or a quick stroll through the mall to remember the history. Lots of locals and a place for kids to hang out. Big Nick's used to be downstairs, not sure if that's there anymore, will have to check when I go back to visit. read more

I was at the mall recently but rarely go. I like the stores but this time I wanted a cinnamon roll so I went to Cool Bird. Two employees working and there was no line only one person was getting something and had already paid. the guy tells me he needs to make a coffee so I watch him put the coffee into the machine and then he proceeds to watch it and stir milk. I'm standing there for 5 minute! the other woman isn't doing anything but when I walked closer to her she laughed and walked into the back. i waited for a little while somewhere around 10 minutes. the woman came back out giggling and got a surprised look on her face turned around went into the back and the guy was still stirring milk Cool Bird employees are horrible and have crappy customer service! this experience has put a rotten taste in my mouth and you wonder why malls are going out of business read more

The West Acres organization has developed and maintained an excellent mall. The mall is large, in top notch shape and pretty much always at capacity with stores. The expansion of the large food court area a number of years ago was a great addition to the mall (you will find only one sit-down restaurant inside the mall and that is Chili's). West Acres Mall is a destination for many people who live in eastern ND and western MN. In the Sears wing, you will also find the Roger Maris Museum which is not really a standalone museum but a long display case with a small viewing room. You will find many of the standard stores you see in other nice malls across the country. The anchors are JCPenney, Herbergers, Macy's and Sears. read more

I love that they have a Macy's (the only one in the state). There is also a pretty good food court. Okay, this is a nice mall, and I'm not a mall fan at all. We stopped here for the first time this past weekend and were extremely impressed with the large interior hallways and lobby, the incredible food court - with actual art on the walls, the huge fireplace, and other decorating touches and lighting that made it feel very un-mall like. It has a very nice variety of stores and food choices. If I had to shop at a mall, I'd choose West Acres over any other mall I've ever been to (including the Mall of America). The designers/decorators put a lot of thought (and money) into designing a nice space, with lots of room. The mall was very busy the day we were there, but it didn't detract from the beauty of the place. read more

West Acres - you will always have a place in my heart. When I was 14, my mom would drop my off at the mall and I would roam around with friends. Each fall, I would spend hours trying on back to school clothes. Just a few months later the Christmas decorations go up, the music would change and once again, I spent hours - no days combing the stores for the perfect gift to put under the tree for each member of my family. Over the years the stores have changed, the nerdy staff has evolved and grown up, the zubaz kiosk has come and gone and come back (I know...right?!) and they even moved the fountains from one end to the other - but it will always be MY mall. The food court has just about everything you could want. McDonald's, Subway, Taco John's, Chinese, Pretzel Maker, you name it. The mall has great variety of shopping with the big department stores, the small specialty stores, sporting goods, shoe stores - a little bit of everything. Between the food court, the stores and the shopping masses it has the makings for people watching too -- which let's be honest, that is the best part. :) read more

I was christmas shopping for my family here two days ago, when my keys were pickpocketed from me. I live an hour away and was panicking, being stranded for a few hours, near closing. The mall staff/workers did absolutely NOTHING for me. They didnt offer to help look, or check cameras- they simply told me "sorry" and that I could call a homeless shelter to stay in. I will never return to this helpless, disgusting mall. I will waste gas to drive to grand forks or Minneapolis to go to one of THEIR malls instead. read more

Went to the Food Court to get a mint tea and blueberry scone while waiting for my daughter and her friend to spend their Christmas money. The one tea and scone cost me SEVEN DOLLARS! What a massive rip-off. I could get an entire meal and a drink at Cajun Cafe for that price. The scone was probably a day old. Crusty and hard on the edges and the middle was somewhat soft. It was crumbly as in old food crumbly. Rediculous.. Don't go here. read more

Rarely do I go to malls. Where I come from the malls are losing businesses. West Acres appeared to have plenty of life. My friend and I saw several stores we liked. Most impressive at the mall was the big water fountain with a sunroof above. The sun shining down on it. Very beautiful! A great location. Just off I-29. So, I'm your typical guy and I'm not a big fan of malls. But when my wife and I do end up going here to shop, it's usually a pleasant experience. It gets REALLY crowded on the weekends, but that's because it's the nicest mall in the area. If you want to get to decent stores, you have to go here. Pros of shopping here: - The mall isn't so big that you can't navigate it. There are different "wings", as I call them, each ending in a big department store. JC Penny, Sears, Herberger's. So it's easy to make the trip around and find the places you need to go. - There are plenty of places to sit, a nice fountain, little coffee shops, and a really nice food court. And Coolbird Creamery is a must for me. - The people working there are always friendly and helpful. Cons: - There are about 10 jewelry stores. Why? WHY?? - Not many places for kids. They took out the arcade years ago and replaced it with some weak dinosaur playground. I might be bitter because maybe I also enjoyed the arcade. - There aren't many good places for men's clothing. The department stores are fine, but every other store is pretty much a ladies' store. Hint to the people who run the place: If you want men to stop rolling their eyes and being caricatures of bored sitcom husbands, please put in places where we can get some shopping done. I'm not a big shopping fan, but even I need some new socks or shorts every once in a while. read more

This is the largest mall in Fargo and it's not too bad considering the size of the city. I think it's good enough to get all your shopping needs done. It has big stores such as Macy's and stores I wouldn't think they'd have such as Hot Topic. The mall is nice and clean and the food court has enough options to satisfy everyone. Taxes are cheaper here so I found my shopping trip worthwhile. read more

This is the best mall in North Dakota that I've been to so far. Food court did not have anything special which is why I deducted a star. If you are visiting Grand Forks, go to Fargo for your shopping which was only about an hour to an hour and fifteen minute drive. I went on a Saturday at 2:00pm and it was pretty busy. What can I say? It is mallish like a mall should be and the only one in the F-M area that is worth coming too. The Moorhead Center Mall is a sad ghost town of a mall, like where business comes to die. So thankful Fargo has a mall with a thriving food court and department stores. Coming from a large city like Columbus, OH West Acres definitely leaves something to be desired. I am used to a city that has at least 3 or 4 malls in a 30 mile radius but the options in the Fargo-Moorhead area include West Acres and the Moorhead center mall. In a comparison of the two, West Acres is the above and beyond winner. It has most of the normal chain stores like Express, VS, aeropostle, etc... and even has a museum inside.... read more

I forgot this in my earlier rounds of reviews and thought I should, as I'm playing catch-up right at the moment, address it. Back when I was there a lot, which was a time it was probably more akin to the building in Mallrats, minus the second floor, it was actually kind of a quirky, funky, homey little place to spend some time. Big-time hang-out spot, naturally and if you wanted to while away and waste some time, this was a good spot. Crap for actual shopping, unless you wanted to hit the movie theater in back or maybe hit up one of the larger chain clothiers, such as Sears or JC Penney. Back then it had a certain charm to it. Fast forward to now and it's a mess, mirroring malls in other cities Fargo is evidently strongly jealous of and aspires to be (an event I projected happening approximately never). All of that charm is gone, along with Scheel's, I guess. Instead of kind of a fun place to loiter, it is now something to escape as soon as possible, if one discards the stern warning the parking lot provides and ventures in there accidentally. Even back then, we referred to it as wasted acres, so great job ruining a once ok mall and getting it to finally live up to its nickname, I guess. Don't buy a West Acres Mall Card. It sounds like a gift card, which is prohibited by law from having service and dormancy fees and expiration dates. But the Mall Card rules say, "After one year of inactivity, a nonrefundable monthly fee will be charged in the amount of $3.00, starting the first day after one year of inactivity. This fee will be automatically deducted each month from the card balance until the balance is zero." I tried to use my $50 Mall Card, only to find that it's value had been reduced to nothing. West Acres Guest Services agreed to reinstate the card's balance, but when I tried to use it, it still had no value. I went back to Guest Services and they denied that they had refunded my card. Only after arguing with the nasty Guest Services worker did she refund it. You'd be much better off with cash than a West Acres Mall Card! You can use cash anywhere and you don't have to pay a fee if you don't use it. read more

Love West Acres: a clean, inviting shopping center with great stores. (I love Apricot Lane, Hot Mama, Macy's, Bath and Body Works, Victoria's Secret and Gap!) AND they are getting a Forever 21 in October! Centrally located in Fargo with plenty of restaurants and hotels surrounding it. Just visited the other day and noticed that one of the wings is currently being remodeled. Nice sized center with good places to eat, and plenty of comfortable seating to relax. They also have regional art located throughout the center which is great to look at while browsing the stores. read more
