The West 94th Street Pub is really sort of a destination - since it's in the Woodcroft shopping center, which also features the Food Lion and the wild bird store, it's not exactly well-positioned for a pub crawl. Still, once you step inside, the ambiance is quite good and pub-like - a little bit dark, a little bit crowded, covered in sports and beer paraphernalia, with a good bar area and selection of beers on tap. The food is a cut above expected pub fare - there were many things on the menu that looked appealing. You can get traditional stuff, like fish and chips, or get something a bit lighter. I had a chicken salad sandwich, for instance. The nachos were also pretty tasty - chili and actual melted cheese, not just processed melty cheese sauce. The crowd was very low-key while we were there - I heard people around me ordering Jaeger bombs and kamikazes, but no one was being drunk and disorderly. It looks like they have some live entertainment on the weekends, so I bet it gets a little wilder then. Apparently when there's one waitress and one behind the bar, if sitting outside for 15 minutes and not getting any service then deciding to push my way to order at the bar means the waitress will completely ignore you whenever she decides to pop outside. Our table needed clearing, our beer glasses empty and the worst part I actually turned to face her, smiled and about to ask for our 2nd beers and she walked right past us back inside. Its probably how their tips work and because we placed our order with the bartender we didn't exist in her realm. Trying to close out was another huge inconvenience took about 30 minutes. I went last night with friends to watch the NCAA Championship game. Many of us had small children so we chose this location based on the fact that we could sit on the patio with our kids and and there wouldn't be all the people that many other sports bars would have. When we arrived, they only had ONE server, and he was also the bartender. For the day of a championship game with a local team playing?! Poor guy was swamped, I don't know what they were thinking. Because of this, our group sitting on the patio was told that we could not be served outside. We had to come inside to place orders, get refills, etc. That sucked, but okay we did this. Then when my 17 month old son's food came, it had 3 jalepenos in the fried chicken that I discovered upon tearing it up for him (under the breading? I assume this was a mistake and not how their chicken tenders come). He's allergic to a lot of food so I didn't end up feeding it to him, still had to pay for it though. I ordered the California burger and it literally had nothing on it except lettuce and cheese. Sent it back and they fixed it. Their patrons stood right outside the door, still in the patio area, smoking. This was frustrating but the poor server was so swamped that he couldn't be expected to police the patrons on whether or not they were following NC Law. If you decide to go anyway, the chocolate cake is excellent. I may one day go for takeout just for a piece of cake, but don't think I'll ever go back to the establishment. read more

This one of my favorite places for lunch, afterwork drinks, or light dinner. I stopped in today for lunch and had the fish and chips. The fish was breaded perfectly and crispy on the outside, not greasy, but very tasty. The chips were the made on site potato chips that were hot. A very pleasant entree for lunch. I accompanied the food with the 1554 brew, which is a dark, flavorful, but not heavy, ale. The Pub has a great selection of both brews and food that should appeal to everyone. Having just moved to Durham, we've been trying to find our local. We'd been told about this pub from a couple other bartenders so we drive across town to hang out. The first bartender, Paul was very nice and attentive. Treated us well and we stayed til the end of his shift. Paid our tab with him and started a new one with Dave who deludedly called himself Super Dave. Not only was Dave not versed in how to keep bar patrons happy, he was condescending and rude on a number of occasions and also decided to pad our tab to the tune of $125.
